Stepwise incorporation of white clover (Trifolium repens L.)as fertiliser increases nitrogen fixation and improves nitrogen retention when intercropped with leek (Allium porrum L.) Organic Eprints
Xie, Yue; Sørensen, Jørn Nygaard; Petersen, Karen Koefoed; Kristensen, Hanne Lakkenborg.
Background and aims We investigated whether the incorporation of intercropped white clover as a split-dose fertiliser improves N retention of the plant-soil system in leek production. Methods White clover and leek were grown in pots where clover was stepwise incorporated into soil as fertiliser. Half of the clover was incorporated before leek transplantation (LT), the other half was incorporated 26 (S1) or 41 (S2) days after LT, compared with full incorporation of all clover (F) before LT. 15N injection and leaching studies were performed to investigate interspecific competition and the effects of precipitation on soil N availability. Results Stepwise incorporations increased or had no effect on leek growth, despite competition for N between white...

Undersowing legume crops for green manuring of lettuce Organic Eprints
Sørensen, Jørn Nygaard; Thorup-Kristensen, Kristian.
The objective of this experiment was to investigate the potential of several species of undersown legume crops to deplete soil nitrate and to accumulate nitrogen. A further objective was to measure the effects of the legume crops as a green manure for a succeeding early lettuce crop. In two years, different undersown legume crops were compared to a control treatment where no crop was undersown. In November, at the end of their growing season, the legume crops reduced the content of mineral nitrogen in the top 1 m of the soil to one third of what was available when no crop was undersown. The N uptake in shoots and roots was in the range of 100-160 kg ha-1. The legume crops were incorporated at the beginning of April the succeeding year. In May, the content...

Effect of organic growing systems on sensory quality and chemical composition of tomatoes Organic Eprints
Thybo, Anette K.; Edelenbos, Merete; Christensen, Lars P.; Sørensen, Jørn Nygaard; Thorup-Kristensen, Kristian.
Tomato plants were grown in open beds, confined beds, or combined beds with compost based on clover grass hay, deep litter and peat. Due to only minor effects of growing systems on sensory quality and chemical composition of tomato fruits is was concluded that it is possible to produce tomato fruits in confined and combined soil bed systems without any loss in eating quality. Actually the results indicate, that a slight increase in quality of tomatoes from the confined and combined systems is obtained. The present result points to the fact that confined and combined growing systems may be new relevant commercial growing systems, in which the quality of tomatoes seems to be ensured, and in which nutrient loss and root diseases contamination can be reduced.

An organic and environmentally friendly growing system for greenhouse tomatoes Organic Eprints
Sørensen, Jørn Nygaard; Thorup-Kristensen, Kristian.
Tomato plants were grown in open beds, confined beds, or combined beds with compost based on clover grass hay, deep litter and peat. Plants grown in the confined and the combined beds produced the earliest tomatoes. During the first five weeks of harvest, approximately 18% of the fruits produced in confined beds developed blossom end rot. This disorder was hardly developed in the other growing systems. After five weeks of harvest, these differences in fruit production were unchanged or even increased. Plants grown in the confined beds produced significantly less fruit load compared with the other bed types, especially in 2003. Application of supplemental fertilizer did not significantly increase the fruit production in any year.
