tThe effects of including starfish meal (SM) as an alternative protein source in diets for pigletson performance, faeces characteristics and plasma parameters were investigated. Four dietswere formulated to contain different protein sources: fish meal (FM), extruded soybeanmeal (ESBM) and two levels of SM (SM50 and SM100). All diets contained 174.4 g soybeanmeal/kg feed and were supplemented by up to 166-172 g standardised ileal digestible crudeprotein/kg feed with either FM, ESBM, SM or a combination giving rise to two SM + ESBMdiets with different levels of SM and ESBM. Legume-based catch crops inprove N-supply without increasing the N2O emission Organic Eprints

Legume-based catch crops (LBCCs) may be an important source of nitrogen (N) in organic crop rotations since they are capable of taking up N both from the soil and from the atmosphere via biological N fixation (BNF). Consequently, they may help improve the crop yield through enhancing soil fertility and crop N supply. On the other hand, the legume-based catch crops may also have a negative impact on the climate as they may enhance the emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O), which is a powerful greenhouse gas. Therefore, the findings from two research projects HighCrop (Organic RDD 2) and Legume Future (EU-FP7) are promising, as they show that a higher level of N2O emission is not necessarily the consequence of growing LBCC.

Contribution of feeds from range in organic broiler production Organic Eprints

A study with organic broilers with access to a large range area with herbs was performed and the effect of three broiler genotype (JA757, T851, SU51) with different growth rates and different feeding strategies (HP vs LP) on the animals' feed intake, growth and welfare was investigated. The results so far indicate that feed intake from range and animal welfare is dependent on type of allocated feed and growth rate of the broiler genotype. Thus, gait scores and foot and plumage condition showed that the fastest growing broiler genotype had some problems when fed normal broiler feed, whereas this was not the case for the other genotypes. A computer model is presented, which describes the transformations of C and N in the soil. The development has been divided into two interdependent tasks, the first being development of long-term SOC simulation capabilities, and the second being short-term simulations of C and N, as described in this paper. A number of existing, independent laboratory experiments, covering a range of amendments, have been used for this task. The amendments includes a variety of different crop residues and animal manure. These experiments have included measurements of 13C, 14C and 15N in various pools, and the model facilitates the simulation of these isotopes. Effects of organic matter management and soil loosening on the synchrony between soil N mineralization and crop N demand were studied in a field experiment. Four different levels of organic matter (OM) were applied to a crop rotation during 12 years by various applications of animal manure, straw incorporation and catch crop growing. Hitherto it has been difficult for farmers to predict the effects of various sources of nitrogen (N) supply in organic farming, since these vary greatly in quality and thus in effect on crop yield. This has limited the planning of organic farming crop rotations and the application of manure and other mobile N sources to the crops, since the effect on crop yield would not easily be estimated. Here we used data from long-term organic crop rotation experiments in Denmark to determine the contribution of various N sources to yield of winter wheat and spring barley. Green manure mixtures including legumes and forbs can help to increase N availability in organic arable systems. Anaerobic digestion of green manures may provide ammonium rich digestate, which can be redistributed as fertilizer. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of plant species composition, cutting strategy and anaerobic digestion on the N fertilizer replacement value (NFRV) of different green manures.
