Rapid spatiotemporal variations in rift structure during development of the Corinth Rift, central Greece ArchiMer

The Corinth Rift, central Greece, enables analysis of early rift development as it is young (<5Ma) and highly active and its full history is recorded at high resolution by sedimentary systems. A complete compilation of marine geophysical data, complemented by onshore data, is used to develop a high-resolution chronostratigraphy and detailed fault history for the offshore Corinth Rift, integrating interpretations and reconciling previous discrepancies. Rift migration and localization of deformation have been significant within the rift since inception. Along-arc segmentation and interaction of subducting ridges with the Lesser Antilles Subduction forearc crust revealed by MCS imaging ArchiMer

We present the results from a new grid of deep penetration multichannel seismic (MCS) profiles over the 280-km-long north-central segment of the Lesser Antilles subduction zone. The 14 dip-lines and 7 strike-lines image the topographical variations of (i) the subduction interplate décollement, (ii) the top of the arcward subducting Atlantic oceanic crust (TOC) under the huge accretionary wedge up to 7 km thick, and (iii) the trenchward dipping basement of the deeply buried forearc backstop of the Caribbean upper plate. The four northernmost long dip-lines of this new MCS grid reveal several-kilometres-high topographic variations of the TOC beneath the accretionary wedge offshore Guadeloupe and Antigua islands. Perturbation to the lithosphere along the hotspot track of La Reunion from an offshore-onshore seismic transect ArchiMer

A 250 km long NE-SW lithospheric transect spanning the 40 km wide island of La Reunion and its submarine edifice is derived from lines of air Sun shots at sea on either side, along the assumed hotspot trace. Seismic records were obtained from an array spanning the whole transect and including sea bottom and land receivers, providing a system of reversed and overlapping observations. Low seismic velocity, and hence density, is found on average for the whole edifice above the oceanic plate. We attribute high-velocity anomalies within the edifice to an intrusive core confined under the central northern quarter of the island-crossing segment.
