The arable vegetation of Baltic organic cereal fields as shaped by crop management Organic Eprints
Hofmeijer, Merel A.J.; Melander, Bo; Salonen, Jukka; Verwijst, Theo; Zarina, Livija; Gerowitt, Bärbel.
Weeds remain to be the main challenge within this agricultural system, especially perennials in the north European realm. Because of increased interest in agrobiodiversity functioning, weeds should be kept within manageable limits, while on the other side encourage a specie rich weed flora. One of the PRODIVA project objectives is to investigate to which extent these two aspects can be addressed through the use of diversified crop management. In order to research this objective, weed and management data were obtained from organic farms in the baltic region over the course of two years (2015-2016) in spring sown cereal crops. The impact of the local environment and management factors on the occurring weed communities was studied in multivariate analysis...

Cover crops in cereals – better companions than weeds? Organic Eprints
Salonen, Jukka; Zarina, Livija; Melander, Bo.
Cover crops have gained popularity in cereal cropping now that they are one of the subsidized options in agri-environmental schemes of the EU. Several studies on cover/catch crops affecting nutrient leaching have been published but less information is available concerning their applicability for weed management. In our opinion, combinations of crop and cover crop types as well as crop sequencing conform IPM principles and optimize weed management. The PRODIVA project (ERA-Net Core Organic Plus Action, www.coreorganicplus.org) aims at identifying weed community associations with most common crop types in organic crop production systems. We will clarify the characteristics and relative competitiveness of cover crops providing strong weed suppression without...

Managing Sonchus arvensis using mechanical and cultural methods Organic Eprints
Vanhala, Petri; Lötjönen, Timo; Hurme, Timo; Salonen, Jukka.
Perennial sow-thistle (Sonchus arvensis L.) represents an increasing problem in Finland. Options for mechanical and cultural control of S. arvensis were studied in a field experiment on clay soil under organic production. The experiment consisted of different crop sequences: spring cereal (barley, Hordeum vulgare L., in 2001, oats, Avena sativa L., in 2002) with or without inter-row hoeing and/or stubble cultivation, bare fallow, fibre hemp (Cannabis sativa L.), and ley with mowing. In 2003 the entire field was sown to spring wheat. Crop plant and Sonchus shoot density and dry mass prior to cereal harvest and crop yield were assessed. The control effect was rated: bare fallow > ley > cereal with or without inter-row hoeing > poor growth fibre...

Repeated surveys in Finland follow the changes of weed flora in spring cereal fields Organic Eprints
Salonen, Jukka; Hyvönen, Terho.
Typically, as observed in 1997-1999, the average weed species number was about 25 in organically farmed field and some 10 species less in conventionally farmed field. In this respect, organic farming clearly promotes biodiversity at the farm scale but not so much at the national scale as the field area of organic cropping is only about 6 % of the total Finnish field area.

Aluskasvien mahdollisuudet luomuviljan rikkakasveja vastaan. Organic Eprints
Salonen, Jukka.

Geographical distribution of challenging weed species - Current knowledge in organic arable farming in the Baltic sea region Organic Eprints
Hofmeijer, Merel A.J.; Melander, Bo; Krawczyk, Roman; Verwijst, Theo; Zarina, Livija; Salonen, Jukka; Gerowitt, Bärbel.
They create a great source of agro biodiversity, generating habitats and food sources for other organisms; yet weeds have always posed the greatest challenge in Organic Agriculture from the perspective of production. Because of the specific agricultural management of this farming system, several groups of weed species have naturally adjusted. These can be highly competitive to the crop, acquire high inputs to remove and/or spread rapidly. In this leaflet we will describe the most challenging weed species in organic spring sown cereals in the geographical area of the Baltic sea, based on existing literature and information provided by extension services. We will show and discuss their distribution from country to country and propose a classification...

Crop diversification for weed management in organic arable cropping systems Organic Eprints
Zarina, Livija; Gerowitt, Barbel; Melander, Bo; Salonen, Jukka; Krawczuk, Roman; Verwijst, Theo.
Within the ERA-net CORE Organic Plus transnational programmes supported project PRODIVA producing of the information required for a better utilization of crop diversification for weed management in North European organic arable cropping systems was started. To fulfill the goal of this project- not to eradicate weed problems, which is unlikely to happen in any arable farming system, but to maintain a diversified and manageable weed flora that can support beneficial organisms- there were data from ongoing long-termed cropping system experiments from Latvia analyzed. It is hypothesised that: a) perennial weeds can be suppressed in the post-harvest period by improved cover crop establishment and pertinent selection of cover crop species; b) on-farm...

From practice to science and back – knowledge and information chains in PRODIVA Organic Eprints
Gerowitt, Bärbel; Hofmeijer, Merel A.J.; Melander, Bo; Sonderskov, Mette; Krawczyk, Roman; Kaczmarek, Sylvia; Salonen, Jukka; Verwijst, Theo.
To organize and manage the dissemination process has become a general task within international projects. Within the project PRODIVA (Crop diversification and weed management) we organized these chains as returning cascades between practice (advisors and farmers) and scientists in the Baltic area. A network of farmers was created in each participating region. We collected and used practical knowledge about dominating weed species in Organic spring cereal production. This data can be compared with monitored weeds in the regions. Together with the monitored weeds management data was collected on-farm. Relating this data to the results of experimentally investigated crop diversification tools, being subsidiary crops in the rotation, crop mixtures and variety...

Problematic weed species in organic arable agriculture around the Baltic Sea - an expert database Organic Eprints
Hofmeijer, Merel A.J.; Melander, Bo; Krawczyk, Roman; Salonen, Jukka; Verwijst, Theo; Zarina, L.; Gerowitt, Bärbel.
Weeds are a perpetual challenge in Organic agriculture. However, they serve multiple ecosystem services and a low competitive weed cover can be tolerated. Adding to this, is the fact that only a few species prove problematic for both the crop and the farmer. The international PRODIVA project researches the effect of crop diversity strategies on the diversity of weed communities, hypothesizing that by increasing the weed diversity, the development of problematic weeds will mitigated. A preparatory study was conducted to list the most problematic weed species in spring sown cereals in the countries involved with PRODIVA. For this a literature review was conducted in all participating countries, collecting local sources including grey literature. This was...

Aluskasveista apua luomuviljan rikkakasvintorjuntaan? Organic Eprints
Salonen, Jukka; Känkänen, Hannu.
Rikkakasvien torjunta ja viljelykasvien riittävä ravinteiden saanti ovat luomutuotannon suuria haasteita. Esitelmässä tuotiin esille aluskasvien mahdollisuuksia rikkakasvien hallinnassa. Aluskasveista näyttää olevan enemmmän hyötyä ravinteiden tuottajana/sitojana kuin rikkakasvien kasvun hillitsijänä. Pitkäaikaiset vaikutukset halutaan vielä selvittää kenttäkoesarjan jatkuessa.

Weed flora and weed management of field peas in Finland Organic Eprints
Salonen, Jukka; Hyvönen, Terho; Jalli, Heikki.
The composition of the weed flora of dry pea (Pisum sativum L.) fields and cropping practices were investigated in southwestern Finland. Surveys were done in 2002–2003 in 119 conventionally cropped fields and 64 fields under organic cropping. Herbicides were applied to 92% of conventionally cropped fields where they provided relatively good control but were costly. Weeds were controlled mechanically only in five fields under organic production. A total of 76 weed species were recorded, of which 29 exceeded the 10% frequency level of occurrence. The average number of weed species per field was 10 under conventional cropping and 18 under organic cropping. The most frequent weed species in both cropping practices were Chenopodium album, Stellaria media and...

Luomupeltojen rikkakasvien hallinta peitekasvien avulla Organic Eprints
Koppelmäki, Kari; Känkänen, Hannu; Salonen, Jukka.
Rikkakasvit aiheuttavat merkittävää satohaittaa luonnonmukaisessa peltoviljelyssä. Yleisesti rikka-kasvien hallinta perustuu luomutiloilla mekaaniseen maanmuokkaukseen, josta kuitenkin aiheutuu myös negatiivisia ympäristövaikutuksia kuten maan rakenteen heikkenemistä ja ravinteiden huuh-toutumista. Peitekasvien viljely on mielenkiintoinen vaihtoehto luomutiloilla rikkakasvien hallintaan mekaanisen maanmuokkauksen sijaan. Samalla toteutustavasta riippuen peitekasveja voidaan hyö-dyntää biologisessa typensidonnassa, ravinteiden huuhtoutumisen vähentämisessä, eroosion estossa ja maan kasvukunnon ylläpidossa. Peitekasvien käyttö rikkakasvien hallinnassa perustuu lisääntyvään kilpailuun valosta, ravinteista ja vedestä. Osalla kasveista on myös allelopatisia...
