The genera Eucalyptus is widely used by Brazilian industries. Nonetheless some concerns still persist regarding some of its technological properties. Aiming the improvement of the wood properties the heat treatment is being largely employed in Brazil. The objective of this research was to study the effect of heat treatment on physical and mechanical properties of Eucalyptus cloeziana. We sampled 5 trees with 21 years from which we used the first two logs with length of 3 m each. Heat treatment of 160 and 210 °C were applied for 1 h. O presente estudo objetivou avaliar o uso da constante elástica dinâmica obtida no ensaio não destrutivo, como parâmetro para estimativa das propriedades mecânicas de rigidez e resistência da madeira de Eucalyptus grandis. Para isto, utilizou-se um emissor de ondas ultrassônicas, o qual teve sua sensibilidade avaliada através da comparação com os valores obtidos no ensaio destrutivo de flexão estática. Os resultados evidenciam que a constante elástica dinâmica pode ser utilizada para inferência não destrutiva da rigidez e resistência da madeira de Eucalyptus grandis, entretanto com ressalvas, pois os ajustes observados foram relativamente baixos, com R²aj. de 0,25 e 0,39, respectivamente. doi: 10.4336/2012.pfb.32.69.109 |

This study aimed to evaluate physical and mechanical properties of wood-plastic composites using materials of low processing level. Residues from carpentry as wood shavings from three forest species (Pinus elliottii, Hovenia dulcis and Maclura tinctoria), and thermoplastic type were used. Data were submitted to Duncan’s test with 95% confidence. In relation to the modulus of rupture (MOR) and elasticity- (MOE), all treatments presented successful results, without difference. For the tests of internal bond and screw pullout, the results were not satisfactory. For this last test, the best result was for Hovenia dulcis. The knowledge about the technological properties of the wood enables the achievement of tools that assist in the adequate use of this material. Therefore, the aim of this study was accomplish the technological characterization of Eucalyptus benthamii wood for potential uses. For this, it was used six trees of the forestry plantation implanted in the Guatambu city, Santa Catarina State, Brazil. For the physical characterization of the wood, discs were obtained at three different positions of the trunk of each tree, determining the basic density and retractibility. This study aimed to verify the basic density influence in dynamic bending trails of Hovenia dulcis Thunb wood. In order to do so, 34 samples of heart wood were used, with the following dimensions: 30 x 2 x2 cm (longitudinal, radial and tangential) respectively, according to the Brazilian standard, NBR 7190 (1997). The samples were evaluated for their basic density for the rate between the weight in 12% of moisture and its respective volume and posteriorly, it was separated in two groups: the first with specific weight between 0,55 and 0,64 g/cm³ and the second one between 0,65 and 0,75, aiming the comparison between the treatments. The aim of this study was verify the drying rate and the wood quality from Hovenia dulcis, subjected to three drying processes (45, 60 and 75 ºC ). This way, 45 boards with the followings dimensions were used: 25 x 100 x 500 mm. These boards were dried until reach a moisture of 10%. The defects were quantified using a caliper, measuring the maximum deformation in the middle or in an extremity of the piece, depending on the type of defect. The results showed that the drying rate until 30% was greater than the others were and increased with higher temperatures, except for the 45 ºC process, not only in the hygroscopic stage but also from green condition to 10% of moisture. Objetivou-se verificar o comportamento da madeira serrada de clones de eucalipto durante o processo de secagem ao ar livre, a fim de subsidiar a classificação fenotípica para seleção genética, por meio da avaliação da qualidade da madeira. Para tal, foram utilizadas 15 tábuas de 2,5 x 10,0 x 1,2 cm, de cada clone para o processo de secagem ao ar livre, após foi realizada a avaliação dos defeitos de secagem, adicionalmente, e com isso verificado o índice de rachaduras de topo em tora.
