Biological data extraction from imagery - How far can we go? A case study from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge ArchiMer
Cuvelier, Daphne; De Busserolles, Fanny; Lavaud, Romain; Floc'H, Estelle; Fabri, Marie-claire; Sarradin, Pierre-marie; Sarrazin, Jozee.
In the past few decades, hydrothermal vent research has progressed immensely, resulting in higher-quality samples and long-term studies. With time, scientists are becoming more aware of the impacts of sampling on the faunal communities and are looking for less invasive ways to investigate the vent ecosystems. In this perspective, imagery analysis plays a very important role. With this study, we test which factors can be quantitatively and accurately assessed based on imagery, through comparison with faunal sampling. Twelve instrumented chains were deployed on the Atlantic Eiffel Tower hydrothermal edifice and the corresponding study sites were subsequently sampled. Discrete, quantitative samples were compared to the imagery recorded during the experiment....

Temperature resistance of Hesiolyra bergi, a polychaetous annelid living on deep-sea vent smoker walls ArchiMer
Shillito, Bruce; Jollivet, Didier; Sarradin, Pierre-marie; Rodier, Philippe; Lallier, François; Desbruyeres, Daniel; Gaill, Françoise.
For the first time, in vivo heat-exposure experiments were conducted on the hydrothermal vent polychaete Hesiolyra bergi from the hottest part of the vent biotope. Using a pressurised incubator equipped with video-facilities, we found that H. bergi, which forages around and in the tubes of the thermophilic Alvinella sp., became hyperactive once temperature exceeded 35 degreesC and further lost co-ordination in the 41 to 46 degreesC interval, just before death occurred. Another exposure experiment at 39 degreesC for 3 to 4 h led to 80 % mortality (max) 9 h after heat shock, and 100 % thereafter. In view of the much higher temperatures recorded in this organism's habitat, these results suggest that tolerance to high temperatures (exceeding 40 degreesC) is...

Biological and environmental rhythms in (dark) deep-sea hydrothermal ecosystems ArchiMer
Cuvelier, Daphne; Legendre, Pierre; Laes-huon, Agathe; Sarradin, Pierre-marie; Sarrazin, Jozee.
During 2011, two deep-sea observatories focusing on hydrothermal vent ecology were up and running in the Atlantic (Eiffel Tower, Lucky Strike vent field) and the Northeast Pacific Ocean (NEP) (Grotto, Main Endeavour Field). Both ecological modules recorded imagery and environmental variables jointly for a time span of 23 days (7–30 October 2011) and environmental variables for up to 9 months (October 2011–June 2012). Community dynamics were assessed based on imagery analysis and rhythms in temporal variation for both fauna and environment were revealed. Tidal rhythms were found to be at play in the two settings and were most visible in temperature and tubeworm appearances (at NEP). A  ∼  6 h lag in tidal rhythm occurrence was observed between Pacific and...

TEMPO: a new ecological module for studying deep-sea community dynamics at hydrothermal vents ArchiMer
Sarrazin, Jozee; Blandin, Jerome; Delauney, Laurent; Dentrecolas, Stephane; Dorval, Philippe; Dupont, Jacky; Legrand, Julien; Leroux, D.; Leon, Pierre; Leveque, Jean-jacques; Rodier, Philippe; Vuillemin, Renaud; Sarradin, Pierre-marie.
The major goal of this project, elaborated in the frame of the STREP Exocet/D European project, was to design a first autonomous long-term imaging module equipped with a deep-sea video camera, adequate lightning and sufficient energy storage while taking advantage of most recent progress in imaging and photonics. The new ecological module TEMPO was tested and deployed during the Momareto cruise held from August 6 to September 6, 2006 on the new French oceanographic vessel Pourquoi pas?, with the ROV Victor 6000. The scientific objectives of the Momareto cruise were to study the spatial and temporal dynamics of hydrothermal communities colonizing the MoMAR zone, located on the Azores Triple Junction.

On the nature of dissolved copper ligands in the early buoyant plume of hydrothermal vents ArchiMer
Cotte, Laura; Omanovic, Dario; Waeles, Mathieu; Laes, Agathe; Cathalot, Cecile; Sarradin, Pierre-marie; Riso, Ricardo D..
Environmental contextCopper released by deep-sea hydrothermal vents has been recognised to be partly stabilised against precipitation by its complexation with strong Cu binding ligands. Yet, the sources and nature of these compounds in such environments are still not fully understood. This study shows that the Cu ligands detected are hydrothermally sourced and could be mainly inorganic sulfur species. AbstractThe apparent speciation of Cu in the early buoyant plume of two black smokers (Aisics and Y3) from the hydrothermal vent field Lucky Strike (Mid-Atlantic Ridge) was investigated using competitive ligand exchange-adsorptive cathodic stripping voltammetry (CLE-AdCSV). We have assessed the apparent Cu-binding ligand concentration ([L]) and the...

Long-Term In Situ Survey of Reactive Iron Concentrations at the EMSO-Azores Observatory ArchiMer
Laes-huon, Agathe; Cathalot, Cecile; Legrand, Julien; Tanguy, Virginie; Sarradin, Pierre-marie.
A study of the temporal dynamics of iron concentrations and temperature on a faunal assemblage at the Lucky Strike vent was performed using the Tempo ecological module at the EMSO-Azores deep-sea observatory. The CHEMINI in situ analyzer was implemented on this structure to determine reactive iron concentrations in unfiltered seawater samples along with a temperature probe. Stability tests were performed on the CHEMINI analyzer before deployment (optical module, hyperbaric tests, and deep-sea calibration) for long-term in situ analysis of reactive iron (six months, 2013–2014) at the Tour Eiffel active edifice. Recorded daily, the in situ standard (25 \mu mol.L {}^{-1} ) showed excellent reproducibility (1.07%, n=522 ), confirming satisfactory analytical...

Is temperature a good proxy for sulfide in hydrothermal vent habitats? ArchiMer
Le Bris, Nadine; Rodier, Philippe; Sarradin, Pierre-marie; Le Gall, Christian.
On the basis of previous studies at 9 degrees N and 13 degrees N East Pacific Rise (EPR) fields, we discuss the general assumption that temperature is a proxy for sulfide in vent fauna habitat. The main conclusion of these works is illustrated here through selected examples. In situ measurements were used to assess the variability of chemical parameters as function of temperature at the scale of fauna aggregations. Over a single vent site, aggregations of mussels or Riftia pachyptila discretely distributed around diffuse vents exhibit, in first assumption, similar sulfide-temperature correlation. In contrast, sulfide is much higher, for a given temperature, in the habitat of alvinellids than in neighboring habitats of Riftia pachyptila. Some consistency in...

The VENUS cabled observatory as a method to observe fish behaviour and species assemblages in a hypoxic fjord, Saanich Inlet (British Columbia, Canada) ArchiMer
Matabos, Marjolaine; Piechaud, Nils; De Montigny, Francois; Sarradin, Pierre-marie; Sarrazin, Jozee.
Studies reporting processes that may shape marine benthic communities under the seasonal scale are rare at depths > 50 m. In this study, the use of the VENUS multidisciplinary cabled observatory provided 2-month high-resolution data combining quantitative biology and environmental data in Saanich Inlet, a seasonally hypoxic fjord located on Vancouver Island (British Columbia, Canada). An ecological module equipped with a camera acquired a 3 min video clip every half hour during 2 months at 97 m depth in the oxygen fluctuation zone of the fjord. Results highlighted the role of the tidal cycle on species activity rhythms and confirmed the influence of oxygen fluctuations on benthic assemblage structure and species behaviour. However, environmental...

On the early fate of hydrothermal iron at deep-sea vents: A reassessment after in situ filtration ArchiMer

Deep-sea hydrothermal venting is now recognized as a major source of iron (Fe), an essential trace element that controls marine productivity. However, the reactions occurring during dispersal from buoyant plumes to neutrally buoyant hydrothermal plumes are still poorly constrained. Here we report for the first time on the dissolved-particulate partition of Fe after in situ filtration at the early stage of mixing at different hydrothermal discharges, i.e., Lucky Strike (37 degrees N), TAG (26 degrees N), and Snakepit (23 degrees N) on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. We found that hydrothermal iron is almost completely preserved (>90%) in the dissolved fraction, arguing for low iron-bearing sulfide precipitation of iron in basalt-hosted systems with low Fe:H2S...
