Converting Upland Rice Fields to Rice Terraces in slope area is one of an alternative rice planting system for sustainable rice cultivation on the mountainous area in the upper northern of Thailand. It can produce double yield compared with those of upland rice. However, soil fertility should be considered when first converted. Therefore, rice nutrient management by Omission Plot Technique has been studied. Results in wet season 2011 found that yield from applying phosphorus in combination with potassium chemical fertilizer (+PK or -N) was not significantly different from applying nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium combination (+NPK) and as same as non phosphorus (+NK or -P) or non potassium application (+NP or -K) in which always showed significantly...

Optimized wheatgrass planting material served perfectly seedling and clean. The effect of five difference planting materials to wheatgrass, cut rice stems, sand, soil, paper and no material was investigated. It indicated that at first wheatgrass harvesting (7 days after planting), sand, soil and paper planting materials served higher fresh weight, higher juice quantities and the waste after extracted of wheatgrass than cut rice stems material and nomaterial served. “Beu Ner Moo” rainfed aromatic highland rice varieties were planted on rice terrace by hilltribe Pwakin-nyaw (Karen). The name means aromatic rice which were selected by Pwakin-nyaw farmers long time ago and still grown as a special varieties until now. Due to their impurity, pure line selection was the breeding methodology and geographical indications (GI) was the way to increase their value. There were three steps to develop Beu Ner Moo. 1) Collecting 48 Beu Ner Moo rice varieties from 4 districts of Chiang Mai including Mae Ai, Chiang Dao, Chai Prakan and Mae Chaem. 2) Purifying Beu Ner Moo rice by pure line selection according to their morphological characters and can be classified into 10 groups. “Buer Ner Moo” a rain phase aromatic Highland rice variety, was planted on rice terrace that a hilltribe who called themselves Pwakin-nyaw (Kariang) was the owner. The rice name was Pwakin-nyaw’s language that means “Aromatic rice” same as its physical characteristic. Buer Ner Moo was a land race rice variety, which have been bred by Pwakinnyaw farmer selection. It was kept from generation to next generation until now. Therefore, it still closely related to Pwakin-nyaw’s community. If it was developed to pure variety and to Geographical Indications (GI), that was the way to increase its value.
