Fe-Si Oxides Tracing the Ongoing Low-T° Hydrothermal Alteration of Exhumed Serpentinites at the Ultraslow-spreading Southwest Indian Ridge ArchiMer
Karpoff, A. M.; Sauter, D.; Cannat, M.; Ulrich, M.; Manatschal, G..
On the smooth seafloor of exhumed mantle-rocks of the slow-spreading Southwest Indian Ridge, the secondary oxide and carbonate mineralizations record specific chemical signatures of the alteration of serpentinites by low-temperature hydrothermal seawater-dominated fluids. The uncommon characteristics of Fe-oxides forming nodule cortex or thick encrustments are their high Si, low Mn contents, trace elements (e.g. Cr) and REE behavior. Oxides composition evolves through time. Associated to oxides, carbonates (aragonite, calcite, dolomite) characterize the matrix of young indurated serpentinite breccias found at ridge axis. Such mineralogical and geochemical sequences trace, as proxies, the ongoing mantle-exhumation and serpentinization process linked to the...

Magnetic signature of large exhumed mantle domains of the Southwest Indian Ridge - results from a deep-tow geophysical survey over 0 to 11 Ma old seafloor ArchiMer
Bronner, A.; Sauter, D.; Munschy, M.; Carlut, J.; Searle, R.; Cannat, M.; Manatschal, Gianreto.
We investigate the magnetic signature of ultramafic seafloor in the eastern part of the Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR). There, detachment faulting, continuous over 11 Myr, exhumed large areas of mantle-derived rocks. These exhumed mantle domains occur in the form of a smooth rounded topography with broad ridges locally covered by a thin highly discontinuous volcanic carapace. We present high-resolution data combining deep-tow magnetics, sidescan sonar images and dredged samples collected within two exhumed mantle domains between 62 degrees E and 65 degrees E. We show that, despite an ultra-slow spreading rate, volcanic areas within robust magmatic segments are characterized by well-defined seafloor spreading anomalies. By contrast, the exhumed mantle...

High-resolution estimates of Southwest Indian Ridge plate motions, 20 Ma to present ArchiMer
Demets, C.; Merkouriev, S.; Sauter, D..
We present the first estimates of Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR) plate motions at high temporal resolution during the Quaternary and Neogene based on nearly 5000 crossings of 21 magnetic reversals out to C6no (19.72 Ma) and the digitized traces of 17 fracture zones and transform faults. Our reconstructions of this slow-spreading mid-ocean ridge reveal several unexpected results with notable implications for regional and global plate reconstructions since 20 Ma. Extrapolations of seafloor opening distances to zero-age seafloor based on reconstructions of reversals C1n (0.78 Ma) through C3n.4 (5.2 Ma) reveal evidence for surprisingly large outward displacement of 5 ± 1 km west of 32°E, where motion between the Nubia and Antarctic plates occurs, but 2 ± 1 km...
