The Invasive Rapa Whelk Rapana venosa (Valenciennes 1846): Status and potential ecological impacts in the Rio de la Plata estuary, Argentina-Uruguay OceanDocs
Giberto, D.A.; Bremec, C.; Schejter, L.; Schiariti, A.; Mianzan, H.W.; Acha, E.M..
Recent range extensions of the invasive rapa whelk Rapana venosa, biological data of the population and possible ecological impacts on the food webs of the Rio de la Plata estuary are presented. A total of 41 rapa whelks and 21 egg capsules were collected between February 2004 and March 2006. Specimens were found all over the mixohaline waters of the estuary, with records off Montevideo, Samborombon Bay and off Punta Rasa. Specimens ranged between 28 and 120 mm shell length. Almost all R. venosa presented epibionts all over the shell, suggesting an exposed lifestyle. Egg-masses were attached to specimens of R. venosa, debris and plastic garbage. The spatial distribution of R. venosa within the estuary was coupled with the spatial distribution of Mactra...

La ostra del pacífico Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg, 1793) en la provincia de Buenos Aires: reclutamientos naturales en Bahía Samborombón OceanDocs
Giberto, D.A.; Bremec, C.S.; Schejter, L.; Escolar, M.; Souto, V.; Schiariti, A.; Romero, M.V.; Dos Santos, E.P..
The pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas, one of the most successful invasive species worldwide, inhabits intertidal and shallow subtidal marine and mixohaline coastal waters. In Argentina the species colonized natural ecosystems of southern Buenos Aires and northern Patagonia. However, in the last years the presence of oysters in the coast of Punta Rasa, northern Buenos Aires, was reported. Therefore, with the aim of recognizing the identity of the species, an exploratory survey in the salt marshes close to San Clemente stream was carried out. Individuals were identified as C. gigas (shell height up to 37 mm, density up to ~390 ind. m-2). Oysters were found clumped in small reefs in muddy substrates mixed with shell debris, attached to the stems of Spartina...

Historia de vida y dinámica de poblaciones de Lychnorhiza lucerna (Scyphozoa) ¿Un recurso pesquero alternativo? OceanDocs
Schiariti, A..
In this Thesis we presented the first steps in the study of the life history and population dynamics of Lychnorhiza lucerna as well as the possibilities of development of its fishery in Argentina. L. lucerna presented a metagenetic life cycle characteristic of most scyphozoans. Polyps reproduced asexually by the production of podocysts and polidisk strobilation. The combination of both types of asexual reproduction resulted in a high strobilation rates indicating that the abundance of medusae would strongly depend on polyps abundance and reproduction. The absence of ephyrae in the Río de la Plata estuary suggest that L. lucerna doest not complete its life cycle locally but medusae would be produced by polyps located northwards along the Uruguayan or...

Estimación de tasas de ingestión de Mnemiopsis leidyi (Ctenophora: Lobata) en condiciones de laboratorio OceanDocs
Bertelo, M.I.; Giberto, D.A.; Schiariti, A.; Bianca, F.; Suárez, J.; Mianzan, H.W..
The first results in the development of a standardized methodology to estimate Mnemiopsis leidyi intake rates and their impact on fish recruitment are presented. M. leidyi capability to consume lyophilized fish eggs and level of consumption of such type of preys, Artemia nauplii and rotifera were assessed. Although M. leidyi can consume lyophilized fish eggs, intake rates were extremely low, often null and in all cases lower than those estimated for the other types of preys offered. The increase of feeding rate on each prey was proportional to ctenophores size growth. The results observed suggest that consumption of fish eggs would not affect recruitment. However, there is not a uniform methodology in the literature that allows for standardized...
