Il paraît que dans celles qui habitent exclusivement l’hémisphère austral et les tropiques, la livrée parfaite des femelles adultes est absolument semblable à celle des mâles adultes; dans les autres espèces, le mâle adulte offre un système de coloration très différent de celui de la femelle adulte, qui ressemble sous ce rapport aux individus des deux sexes dans la première livrée. | The readers of my work entitled “Muséum des Pays-Bas” will recollect that I identified with the Gallinula olivacea of Meyen, inhabiting the Philippine islands, a bird collected by the late Dr. Bernstein, in the islands of Halmahera and Ternate, and which was afterwards stated to live equally in the isles of Amboina and Mysole. | Mr. Teysmann, the indefatigable honorary Inspector of the cultures at Buitenzorg in Java, collected, amongst other objects of Natural history, several years ago, during a visit to the island of Sumba, commonly called Sandelwoodisland, two specimens of a pigeon of the genus Treron, which appears to belong to a species hitherto unknown to naturalists. This bird, dedicated to a gentlemen, who has rendered so many services to science, has its next allied species in Treron psittacea from Timor and in Treron floris inhabiting the island from which its epithet is taken. | Les Tinamous forment une tribu d’oiseaux parfaitement isolée et circonscrite, et bornée à la partie de l’Amérique comprise entre le Mexico méridional et la Patagonie. Ils se rattachent, toutefois, naturellement à l’ordre des Gallinae, tout en offrant certaines affinités avec l’ordre des Autruches. Illiger a, le premier, fixé l’attention sur une de ces affinités. | The typical specimen of this new species, was obtained by Mr. Audebert, on the tenth of June 1878, in the neighborhood of Ambodikilo near Mananare a place on the Southwestern shore of the bay of Antongil. Our traveller states that this was the only example of the species which he met with during a course of two years in the North-Eastern parts of Madagascar, a fact leading to the conclusion that this species is much less generally distributed in the country mentioned than its congener, the Cuculus himalayanus or Rochii. The next allied species of Cuculus Audeberti is the Indian Cuculus sparveroides, Vigors, from the continent of India, put by modern ornithologists, after the example of S. Müller in the subgenus Hierococcyx. |

Queue nulle, ou remplacée par de larges plumes à barbes libres. Ailes formées, soit par des plumes semblables, grandes ou petites, soit par 5 ou 6 tiges cornées, fortes et sans barbes. Pieds excessivement robustes. Tarses et doigts très gros. Ongles gros, en guise de sabots, droits ou peu courbés. Tronc très gros, et offrant une position horizontale. Cou allongé, mais gros. Ce sont des oiseaux coureurs, qui ne savent pas voler. Ils nichent à terre. | Les Çaraçaras. Oiseaux de l’Amérique voisins des Buses, mais se rapprochant des vautours par leur manière de vivre. Leur bec est plus ou moins allongé, peu courbé et à bords droits. Leur face est presque toujours plus ou moins nue. Ils ont les tarses plus ou moins allongés, emplumés seulement dans le premier quart de leur longueur, et revêtus le plus souvent, par devant et par derrière, de trois à quatre plaques, suivis vers le haut de plusieurs rangées de plaques plus petites. Leurs ongles sont vigoureux, mais pas très fortement crochus. Martins-pêcheurs. — Bec comprimé, long, le plus souvent noir, pourvu en dessus d’une carène ordinairement aplatie et séparée du reste de la mandibule supérieure, de chaque côté, par un sillon plus ou inoins profond. Us habitent les deux Mondes, à l’exception de la Micronésie, se nourrissent de préférence de poissons et ont le vol rapide. Le nombre des espèces connues est inférieur à celui des espèces du genre Dacelo. I.
