ABSTRACT The genus RhophitulusDucke, 1907 is a large and complex group of bees of the tribe Protandrenini comprising small, slender, mostly black ground-nesting species that are restricted to South America. We describe a new species of Rhophitulus from Parque Nacional São Joaquim, Urubici, state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. Rophitulus ater sp. nov. is distinctive and easily distinguished from other species of the genus by a unique combination of morphological characters in both sexes, but especially by the following: dull black body, coarsely and densely punctate integument, basal area of metapostnotum depressed and areolate rugose, posterior margin of hind tibia and pygidial fimbria of female with blackish pilosity, and characters of the male genitalia with... |

Panurginae have a pair of cuticular depressions in the second metasomal tergum, recognized as lateral foveae of the T2. These structures have been used as systematic and taxonomic characters, although their functions are yet unknown. We aimed a morphological analysis at lateral foveae of three species of Panurgillus Moure, 1998: P. vagabundus (Cockerell, 1918), P. reticulatus Schlindwein & Moure, 1998 e P. flavitarsis Schlindwein & Moure, 1998. The study of the external morphology showed that the lateral foveae of the T2 are evident among females, but in males they are undistinguishable or absent. The surface of the foveae is micropunctuated in all species. The histological analysis has shown that the region of the lateral foveae of the T2,... |

The genus Xylocopa Latreille in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil (Hymenoptera, Anthophoridae). A survey of the genus Xylocopa Latreille, 1802 is given for Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost State of Brazil. Data are based on several studies on the bee fauna of southern Brazil and on unpublished observations. A key is provided to the species (males and females) and information on distribution, nesting habits and relation to flowers. Rio Grande do Sul is strikingly rich in species of Xylocopa because of the diversity of habitats and its geographic position in the transition of tropical/subtropical to temperate climate. Nineteen species, classified into ten subgenera, have been recorded in Rio Grande do Sul. Here we maintain the subgenera Ioxylocopa, Megaxylocopa... |

Xylophanes loelia (Druce, 1878), X. libya (Druce, 1878), Hemeroplanes triptolemus (Cramer, 1779), Eumorpha anchemolus (Cramer, 1779), Manduca brasilensis (Jordan, 1911), M. hannibal (Cramer, 1779), Adhemarius... |

Panurgillus, a generic name used by J.S. Moure throughout various years in litt. as a substitue of Panurginus in the Neotropical Apifauna, is formally described. All specimens of the species here described were collected during surveys of bees and melittophilous plants in th state of Rio Grande do Sul, southem Brazil. Various species of Panurgillus also occur in other states of southem Brazil, in Argentina and probably in Uruguay, Paraguay and Eastem Bolivia. The bees are small (3,9-7,4 mm), black, with generally a few yellow paintings, two submarginal cells, the lst m-cu distant to the base of the second submarginal cell, the clypeus not projected, the facial foveae distinct, scopa with simple, long hairs and the gonobase absent. Panurginus vagabundus... |

The bees described as Panurginus Nylander, 1848, from southern South America and deposited in the Museum Humboldt, Berlin, were studied. Seven species were redescribed and trans-ferred to the genus Panurgillus Schlindwein & Moure, 1998: P. aeneiventris (Friese, 1908),P. brunneicornis (Strand, 1910), P.paraguayanus (Strand, 1910), P. pauloensis (Friese, 1916), P. saltensis (Friese, 1908), P. solani (Ducke, 1912) e P. steinbachi (Friese, 1916). A key for the identification of the 21 known species of the genus is included. Panurginus flaviceps Friese, 1916 and P. saltensis var. nigroclypeata Friese, 1908 described by Friese are synonyms of Anthrenoides meridionalis (Schrottky, 1906). Panurginus laticeps Friese, 1916 belongs to Cephalurgus Moure... |

A really beautiful Euglossinae bee, Euglosssa (Euglossella) perpulchra sp. n., is decribed from Pernambuco, Igarassu, Brazil. It can be recognized by the following characters: head and thorax bronzeous green covered with fulvous pubescence, and abdomen bluish with white marginal bands narrowed progressively from second to sixth tergum; wings slightly fulvous, stigma and wing venation light fulvous. It is closely related to E. decorata Smith, 1874 and E. singularis Mocsáry, 1899. |

Euglossine bees are known to be long-distance pollinators in tropical rainforests. But there is controversy concerning to the flight ranges of these bees between forest fragments. In an isolated fragment of Atlantic Rainforest in Pernambuco, NE Brazil, surrounded by sugarcane monocultures, it was examined if euglossine males leave closed rainforest to collect fragrances. In a straight-line transect leading from forest into a sugarcane plantation, euglossine males were simultaneously captured by scent baits at seven distinct points: inside the forest, forest edge, outside the forest in the sugarcane fields at distances of 10 m, 50 m, 100 m, 250 m and 500 m from the forest edge. A total of 945 euglossine bees of 16 species were recorded. The results... |

ABSTRACT Heteranthery, the presence of different types of stamens in a flower, may reduce the conflict between pollinators and plants by ensuring the resource for the pollinator without drastically affecting the availability of viable male gametes for fertilization, according to the division-of-labor hypothesis. We investigated whether the poricidal anthers of Senna pendula, a buzz-pollinated heterantherous species, present morphological and physiological differences among pollen grains from the three sets of stamens. We compared quantity, ornamentation, size and fecundity of pollen from long, medium and short stamens. The short feeding stamens produced larger but fewer pollen grains than the long pollinating stamens, which produced smaller pollen grains... |
