On organic farms, phosphorus (P) balances are often negative because no or little P is imported into the farms. Negative P balances may deteriorate P availability over time. We calculated P balances of the main farm production types in organic farming for the main Austrian production areas. Using data from various data bases and expert knowledge, we applied the sustainability assessment tool REPRO for calculations. The P balances were balanced to slightly deficient for organic forage dairy farms, cash crop farms and permanent crop farms, and slightly to highly surplus on organic refinement, pig producing farms. Deficient P balances, mainly on organic cash crop farms, call for P input especially on farms where available P fractions in the soil are very low... |

Fodder production requires the highest energy input in dairy farming. Taking the organic and conventional dairy farms from the project “climate effects of land use systems – evaluations on pilot farms” as an example we analyse the energy input for producing different fodder types and the influence of feeding strategies in Southern Germany. The results show that grazing is the most energy efficient form of feeding, followed by fresh grass and silage. Hay requires the highest energy input per unit forage energy. Maize silage has a lower energy input due to high yields. The higher the part of roughage in the ration the lower is the energy input for production of the ration. |

The increasing demand for bioenergy and the combination of agricultural production with conservation has made agroforestry to a sustainable land-management option. Aboveground woody biomass plays a decisive role considering the economic value of the agroforestry systems as well as the carbon storage. With the objective to study aboveground woody biomass production of agroforestry systems with different cultivation methods (organic/ integrated), short rotation plantations of different tree species were established 2009 and coppiced in 2012. The studied tree species were black alder (Alnus glutinosa), black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia), poplar “Max 3”, (Populus maximowiczii x Populus nigra) and willow “Inger” (Salix triandra x Salix viminalis). At the end... |

The aim of this study conducted at the experimental farm in Scheyern, was to investigate whether earthworm population in different habitats and under different farming systems (organic vs. integrated) differs. Arable land was compared with alley cropping systems, with meadows and field margins. For comparison purpose there were also investigations on the natural habitats fallow, forest and forest edge. The field study yielded the following results: In the meadow, the tree row in the alley cropping system and in the natural reference habitats (with exception of the studied forest), the abundance and species diversity was enhanced compared with arable land. In addition the tree rows in the alley cropping system had a positive effect on the earthworm... |

About 8.8 % (UBA 2010) of the total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Austria are caused by agricultural practices. Besides the release of climate relevant gases, C-sequestration occurs depending on the natural conditions and farming system. The focus of the project was to describe the GHG-emissions and sinks of the most relevant farming types, both organic and conventional, within the main production areas in Austria. Results of an intensively cultivated region in the North-West are presented. Based on the input data, six model-farms were created with the programme REPRO, whereby forage production, cash crops and refinement systems were considered. All systems had a positive humus balance and sequestered carbon in the soil, especially forage... |

Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) belongs to the significant part of legume pastures and is high-quality forage. In organic farming, it plays a pivotal role in contribution to a soil nitrogen balance. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the site and the time on the root diameter, number of nodules and yield of alfalfa in field experiments of organic farming. On six areas with different soil texture (clay content: 12-32%) in south Bavaria, Germany, plants were sampled with the monolith method. In May, July and August 2011 the yield, the root diameter and the number of nodules were evaluated. The yield amounted to 8-12 t ha-1. The root diameter increased, the number of nodules decreased with time. The significant differences were investigated in... |

Fodder legumes, like lucerne, make a significant contribution to a positive humus balance and nitrogen supply on organic farms. To determine the required lucerne percentage to meet these targets, several shares of lucerne were modelled on the basis of empirical data of an eight-field crop rotation. The lower limit for ensuring optimum humus and nitrogen supply in this rotation was approximately 17 % lucerne. The calculation of the data was performed with the agricultural software REPRO. |

Agroforestry systems provide numerous environmental services. One of the advantages is the increase of biodiversity. Earthworms play a major role in soil fertility and have a key function in ecosystems. Abundance, biomass and the amount of species was measured to quantify the influences of trees on the earthworm population in integrated and organic farming systems. Results showed that in poplar stands the amount of earthworms, especially juvenile, was higher than in winter wheat or lucerne-clover-grass fields. Furthermore the organic farming system had higher earthworm abundance and species richness than the integrated farming system. Regarding tree species poplar had fewer earthworms in total and fewer epigeic species. |

In a network of organic and conventional pilot farms with dairy and/or arable production in Germany (www.pilotbetriebe.de) aspects of sustainability, resource efficiency, animal health and welfare and economic aspects are analysed. This is based on on-farm assessments and on whole farm modelling. In the first interdisciplinary workshops on the project farms results were presented and scenarios were developed in a participatory approach by scientists, consultants and farmers to improve N, P and land use efficiency as well as dairy health and welfare. Typical areas of action to optimize sustainability in these aspects were identified on the farms, e.g., complete accounting of manure N (N balance), enrichment of crop rotations with clover grass and cover... |
