Plant parasitic nematodes may cause massive yield reductions in organic farming. Long rotations, often high amounts of weeds and a high frequency of legumes favour parasitic nematodes with a broad host range such as Meloidogyne spp. und Pratylenchus spp. The EU- Projekt OSCAR (Optimizing Subsidiary Crop Applications in Rotations) aims at improving soil conservation through minimum tillage combined with living mulches, cover crops and the use of suppressive composts. An experiment was set up with a rotation of 2-year grass-clover mix followed by wheat and then potatoes. Experimental factors were tillage, cover crops, and compost application. Until now Nematodes were sampled before and after wheat and before potatoes. Population dynamics over time were more... |

Legume foot and root diseases are influenced by complex interactions of site, soil properties, seed health, cropping sequence and climate. Crop rotation, cover crops and organic matter management are the key management tools in the dealing with the increase pathogen pressure. Application of high quality composts and other organic amendments is potential ecologically friendly alternative to fungicide application for control of soil-borne fungal pathogens. In order to evaluate the potential of Yard Waste Compost (YWC) to suppress foot rot disease of pea caused by Didymella pinodes (syn Mycospharella pinodes), Phoma medicaginis, Fusarium solani f. sp pisi and F. avenaceum, a pot experiment was carried out under controlled conditions. The susceptible spring... |

Agriculture has transformed over the past centuries dramatically to become highly dependent on non-renewable fossil fuels, synthetic fertilizers and plant protection agents. This often occurs at the cost of soil degradation and soil food web disturbance. Future agriculture must not only be productive but also provide ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration, pest and disease suppression, nutrient cycling and water storage to become sustainable in the long-term. Sustainability is especially fostered by reduced tillage and the presence of a permanent layer of plant residues. Under such conditions, soil compaction is reduced, soil structure improved, water infiltration enhanced, soil organic content increased and microbial activity stimulated. However,... |
