Resource competition between macrobenthic epifauna in a Kenyan Avicennia marina mangrove forest OMA
Schrijvers, J.; Fermon, H.; Vincx, M..
A cage exclusion experiment was used to examine the interaction between the epibenthos (permanent and visiting) and the macroinfauna of a high intertidal Kenyan Avicennia marina mangrove sediment. Densities of Oligochaeta (families Tubificidae and Enchytraeidae), Amphipoda, Insecta larvae, Polychaeta and macro-Nematoda, and a broad range of environmental factors were followed over 5 mo of caging. A significant increase of amphipod and insect larvae densities in the cages indicated a positive exclusion effect, while no such effect was observed for oligochaetes (Tubificidae in particular), polychaetes or macronematodes. Resource competitive interactions were a plausible explanation for the status of the amphipod community. This was...

Influence of epibenthos on meiobenthos of the Ceriops tagal mangrove sediment at Gazi Bay, Kenya OMA
Schrijvers, J.; Okondo, J.; Steyaert, M.; Vincx, M..
A cage experiment was used to exclude the epibenthos from the Ceriops tagal mangrove sediment at Gazi Bay, Kenya. This made it possible to study interactions with the meiobenthos (in terms of predation, food competition and food enhancement). The density of the meiobenthic taxa and nematode genera and a broad range of abiotic variables were followed in a depth profile over 1 yr of caging. There was a significant exclusion effect in the upper sediment layer for total meiofauna, nematodes and oligochaetes during the first 2 mo and for copepods during the last 6 mo of caging. The density of the most common predatory and microalgae-feeding nematodes in particular tended to increase in the surface layers as well as the percentage of muddy...

The infaunal macrobenthos under East African Ceriops tagal mangroves impacted by epibenthos OMA
Schrijvers, J.; Camargo, M.G.; Pratiwi, R.; Vincx, M..
The interactions between macrobenthic in- and epifauna of a mid-intertidal Ceriops tagal (Perr.) Rob. stand were studied in order to test the relative importance of epibenthic predation pressure on and resource competition with the macro-endobenthos. The study is the fourth in a series of papers based on exclusion experiments in two different parts of the mangrove system at Gazi Bay in southern Kenya. The permanent and visiting epibenthos were excluded using cages. Densities of the macrobenthic taxa Oligochaeta (families Tubificidae and Enchytraeidae), Amphipoda (genera Grandidierella and Ampelisca), Insecta larvae (family Dolichopodidae), Polychaeta (families Nereidae and Terebellidae),...
