| My paper is divided in two parts. In the first I will attempt to provide a brief overview of the world food situation, with an emphasis on what has happened during the 1970's - the decade when many observers thought we were headed for a Malthusian crisis. In the second part I will discuss the factors likely to affect the world food situation in the 1980's and beyond. |

| The value of a nation's currency is the most important price in its economy. Attempts to establish or maintain fixed exchange rates between countries are no longer possible due to the sheer size of international financial markets. The value of a nation's currency not only influences the relative prices between its tradeable and nontradeable sectors, it influences in very important ways a country relates to the rest of the international economy. The most significant effect of cyclical swings in exchange rates is the impact on trade where undervalued currencies amount to an export subsidy and an import tariff. | An analysis is done on the potential effects of several improved cropping practices in a subsistence agricultural farming system along with analyses of other development options. The farming system is modeled as a linear programming model. The problem involves mixture of perennials and annuals, sharecropping provisions and risk. The practices are found to have differential effects on the distribution of income between the landlords and tenants, marketable surplus and on farm employment. |

| Economists who address economic development problems are in a position to contribute a great deal to reduce the disequilibria cited, to bring about a more efficient allocation of the world's resources, and to improve equity in the distribution of income on a global scale. Moreover, as will be explained below, I believe the American Agricultural Economic Association should do a great deal more to help the members of our profession to become more effectively involved in these important tasks. | As background for addressing agricultural policy and sustainable development issues, we address in this paper some general issues we believe it important to consider in developing a broad and consistent conceptual framework for the analysis of sustainability. The objective of this paper is to propose a comprehensive conceptual framework for bringing sustainability issues into practical public policy formulation. A "people first" view is proposed: one that assumes that the ultimate purpose of natural resources and the economic system is first the well-being of mankind. |
