Due to the inclusion of trips which started at the end of 1993 but which finished in early 1994 the 1993 total catch for the WIO has been revised upwards from 263,918 MT, published in the last Tuna Bulletin, to 275,058 MT. The initial estimate for the total WIO purse seine tuna catch for the first three months of 1994 is 61,159 MT (the figure of 70,000 MT published in the Globefish Bulletin 2/94 was based on an early estimate). However, this figure may also be revised upwards when trips starting in the first quarter of 1994 and finishing in second quarter are included in the next quarterly Tuna Bulletin of 1994. This compares with 71, 142 MT caught in the first three months of 1993. Some 2,173 days were fished in the first quarter of 1994 compared to... |

The number of purse seiners active in the Western Indian Ocean during the third quarter of 1989 increased from 46 vessels in June to 48 in July reaching an all-time high of 51 in September. The highest number of vessels previously recorded for this fishery was 49, between December 1984 to February 1985, and in early 1989. During the same period last year a maximum of 46 vessels were in operation.Poor fishing results obtained during the second quarter continued throughout July and August, with daily catch rates averaging 11-13 MT. In September, however, fishing success improved considerably with catch rates rising to 26.5 MT/day, nearly reaching the level obtained (30 MT/day during the same period last year. Skipjack remained the predominant species in... |

The number of purse seiners active in the Western Indian Ocean during the fourth quarter of 1988 increased gradually from 45 in October to 48 in December. This represents an increase over the same period last year, when 41 vessels were present. There was also a considerable improvement in the performance of the fishing fleet compared to the two previous years. Catch rates for 1988 were estimated at 29 MT/day compared to 18 MT/day in 1987 and 15 MT/day in 1986. The proportion of yellow fin in the catch moreover increased from 38% in 1987 to 47% in 1988 with a corresponding decline in the percentage of skipjack, from 61 to 52 percent. The fishing pattern during 1988 however followed an almost similar trend as previous years with yellow fin catch rates... |
