PRODUCTION AND FINANCIAL IMPACTS OF THE ADOPTION OF BOVINE SOMATOTROPIN ON U.S. DAIRY FARMS AgEcon
McBride, William D.; Short, Sara D.; El-Osta, Hisham S..
Production and financial impacts of recombinant bovine somatotropin (rbST) adoption are assessed using a survey of U.S. dairy operations and a model that corrects for self-selection bias. A substantial increase in milk production per cow is associated with rbST adoption, but large estimated financial impacts are not statistically significant. Substantial variation in the net returns of rbST adopters may be related to the management-intensive nature of rbST.

EFFECTS OF LOW MILK PRICES ON U.S. DAIRY FARMS IN 2000 AgEcon
Short, Sara D..
Effects of low milk prices on U.S. dairy farms are assessed using a survey of U.S. dairy operations. Although small dairy operations were particularly vulnerable to the decline in milk prices in 2000, 41 percent of these operations were able to produce milk at a cost that was competitive with larger operations. This suggests that the managerial ability of the individual dairy producers is likely to be as important as size economies to lowering the costs of milk production.

THE ECONOMIC IMPACTS OF EPA'S CAFO RULE ON DAIRY FARMS IN CORNBELT, UPPER-MIDWEST, AND NORTHEAST REGIONS AgEcon
Huang, Wen-Yuan; Short, Sara D..
EPA has proposed a rule that would bring more dairy farms under regulation and restrict manure application more closely to a crop's need of phosphorous. This paper uses whole farm modeling applied to survey data to assess the impact of proposed regulations on dairy farms in the Cornbelt, upper-Midwest, and Northeast regions. Results show that the proposed rule affects 2.7 percent of surveyed dairy farms (over 200 milk cows) in these regions and causes income losses for 40 percent of farms spreading slurry manure on crops.

THE BEEF COW REPLACEMENT DECISION AgEcon
Mathews, Kenneth H., Jr.; Short, Sara D..
This analysis examines effects of several common assumptions on net present values (NPVs) of beef cows. While effects on NPVs vary over a price cycle or successive price cycles, several generalities manifest themselves. A cow is not likely to recover the lost revenue from not having just one calf. Incorporating genetic improvement into the herd increases the probability of an older cow being culled. Variable net replacement/culling rates make sense in the context of cattle inventory and price cycles because of the effects cyclical series of prices have on NPV.
