Economic viability of including palm kernel cake in diets for feedlot lactating cows Animal Sciences
Pimentel, Leidiane Reis; Silva, Fabiano Ferreira da; Silva, Robério Rodrigues; Schio, Alex Resende; Rodrigues, Eli Santana de Oliveira; Costa, Lucas Teixeira.
This study aimed to evaluate the inclusion of palm kernel cake in the diet for lactating crossbred cows in feedlot system, and its implications on economic viability. We used 12 crossbred Holstein x Zebu cows assigned to three 4 x 4 Latin Squares, in the following treatments: control (without inclusion of palm kernel cake in the diet); inclusion of 50, 100 or 150 g palm kernel cake (PKC) per kg in the total dry matter (TDM). Earnings per animal showed a reduction in values, this decrease in profitability is related to the increase in feed costs, specifically, and the costs with concentrate, which increased as the palm kernel cake was included in the treatments, 0, 50, 100 and 150 g kg-1 TDM. The effect observed for profitability affected the internal rate...

Feeding behavior of sheep fed sugarcane silage enriched with detoxified castor bean meal Animal Sciences
Oliveira, Aline Carsoso; Garcia, Rasmo; Almeida, Vitor Visintin Silva de; Oliveira, Hellenn Cardoso; Silva, Robério Rodrigues; Lima Júnior, Dorgival Morais de.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the feeding behavior of sheep fed sugarcane silage enriched with increasing levels of detoxified castor bean meal. Twenty-four non-castrated male Santa Inês sheep with an average body weight of 25.34 kg and four months of age, were distributed in four treatments - 0, 7, 14 and 21% of the natural matter of detoxified castor bean meal in sugarcane silage. There was a linear increase (p < 0.05) in time spent eating and feeding and rumination efficiency (g MS and NDF/h) with the inclusion of castor bean meal in silage. However, there was a linear decreasing response for time spent resting (p < 0.05). Time spent ruminating, number of boluses per day and numbers of chews per day per bolus were not affected (p >...

Ethology of cross-breed cows milked in the presence or absence of calves Animal Sciences
Silva, Vinícius Lopes da; Silva, Fabiano Ferreira da; Silva, Robério Rodrigues; Teixeira, Fábio Andrade; Costa-Lopes, Lívia Santos; Souza, Danilo Ribeiro de.
The behavior of crossbreed cows, milked in the presence or absence of their calves, was analyzed. The trial was conducted on the Dairy Cattle Sector of UESB School of Animal Science in Itapetinga BA Brazil. Twenty crossbreedHolsteinx Gir cows were distributed in a randomized block design with 10 replications for each treatment for the experimental period of 31 days, during lactation. Results were analyzed by nonparametric chi-square test at 5% significance, except the variables time at the milking sector and milk production which were evaluated by analysis of variance and F test at 5% probability. Although cows with the presence of calves during milking had higher reactivity, behavioral activities and more time in the milking sector, milk production was...

Feeding behavior of lactating cows fed palm kernel cake in the diet Animal Sciences
Pimentel, Leidiane Reis; Silva, Fabiano Ferreira da; Silva, Robério Rodrigues; Schio, Alex Resende; Rodrigues, Eli Santana de Oliveira; Oliveira, Paulo Andrade de.
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of including of palm kernel cake on feeding behavior of lactating crossbred cows. Twelve crossbred Holstein x Zebu cows were distributed in three 4 x 4 latin squares, with the following treatments: control; inclusion of 5%; inclusion of 10%; inclusion of 15% palm kernel cake in the diet dry matter. The animals were observed during four periods as to feeding behavior, 24 hours in each period. There was no effect of inclusion of palm kernel cake (p > 0.05) on time spent on eating, ruminating and idling. The feeding efficiencies of dry matter and corrected neutral detergent fiber, total digestible nutrients, and the rumination efficiency of corrected neutral detergent fiber were not influenced (p > 0.05). There...

Body weight components of Nellore steers finished in tropical pastures Animal Sciences
Almeida, Vitor Visitin Silva de; Oliveira, Aline Cardoso; Oliveira, Hellenn Cardoso; Silva, Robério Rodrigues; Lima Júnior, Dorgival Morais de.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of increasing levels of supplementation on body weight components of Nellore cattle grazing in Urochloa brizantha. Twenty-four steers with initial body weight (BW) of 371 ± 14 kg and average age of 26 months were used. Four animals were slaughtered at the beginning of the experiment as a reference and the others were distributed in 4 treatments [0.0% (mineral salt), 0.3%, 0.6% and 0.9% supplement BW]. The slaughter of the experimental group was performed when the animals reached 450 kg and the body weight components were weighed. Data were submitted to analysis of variance and regression. The increase in supplementation level reduced (p < 0.05) pasture dry matter intake, but did not influence (p >...
