Ecology of Ischnocnema parva (Anura: Brachycephalidae) at the Atlantic Rainforest of Serra da Concórdia, state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Martins,Ana Cristina J. S.; Kiefer,Mara C.; Siqueira,Carla C.; Van Sluys,Monique; Menezes,Vanderlaine A.; Rocha,Carlos Frederico D..
Ischnocnema (Brachycephalidae) includes many species that are important members of the leaf litter frog communities in the Atlantic Rainforest of Brazil. Ischnocnema parva (Girard, 1853) is endemic to the Atlantic Rainforest biome and is restricted to the forests of southeastern Brazil. Currently, the available information about the ecology of I. parva is scarce. We studied the diet, the habitat use, reproduction and density of I. parva in an area of Atlantic Rainforest at the Concórdia mountain range, Rio de Janeiro. Individuals of I. parva were captured in April 2005 using different sampling methods: time constrained search (transects), plots of 5 x 5 m (25 m²) on the litter, and pitfall traps with drift fences. We found 240 frogs; 35 females and 205...

Environmental parameters affecting the structure of leaf-litter frog (Amphibia: Anura) communities in tropical forests: a case study from an Atlantic Rainforest area in southeastern Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Siqueira,Carla C.; Vrcibradic,Davor; Nogueira-Costa,Paulo; Martins,Angele R.; Dantas,Leonardo; Gomes,Vagner L. R.; Bergallo,Helena G.; Rocha,Carlos Frederico D..
Despite a recent increase of information on leaf litter frog communities from Atlantic rainforests, few studies have analyzed the relationship between environmental parameters and community structure of these animals. We analyzed the effects of some environmental factors on a leaf litter frog community at an Atlantic Rainforest area in southeastern Brazil. Data collection lasted ten consecutive days in January 2010, at elevations ranging between 300 and 520 m above sea level. We established 50 quadrats of 5 x 5 m on the forest floor, totaling 1,250 m² of sampled area, and recorded the mean leaf-litter depth and the number of trees within the plot, as well as altitude. We found 307 individuals belonging to ten frog species within the plots. The overall...

Density and richness of leaf litter frogs (Amphibia: Anura) of an Atlantic Rainforest area in the Serra dos Órgãos, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Siqueira,Carla C.; Vrcibradic,Davor; Almeida-Gomes,Mauricio; Borges-Junior,Vitor N. T.; Almeida-Santos,Patrícia; Almeida-Santos,Marlon; Ariani,Cristina V.; Guedes,Diego M.; Goyannes-Araújo,Pablo; Dorigo,Thiago A.; Van Sluys,Monique; Rocha,Carlos F. D..
Data on species composition, richness, and density are presented for the leaf litter frog assemblage of an area of Atlantic Rainforest at the Serra dos Órgãos mountain range, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, southeastern Brazil. Three sampling methods were used: plot sampling, visual encounter surveys, and pitfall traps. The local assemblage of leaf litter frogs was composed of 16 species, with the direct-developing species, Euparkerella brasiliensis (Parker, 1926), being the most abundant. The estimated density of the local leaf litter frog assemblage based on plot sampling was 17.1 ind/100 m² and the estimated overall leaf litter frog mass was 684.2 g/ha. The estimated density of leaf litter frogs at the present study is the highest currently reported for...

Diet of the lizard Ecpleopus gaudichaudii (Gymnophthalmidae) in Atlantic Rainforest, state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Maia,Thiago; Almeida-Gomes,Mauricio; Siqueira,Carla C.; Vrcibradic,Davor; Kiefer,Mara C.; Rocha,Carlos Frederico D..
In this study we analyzed the diet of the gymnophthalmid lizard Ecpleopus gaudichaudii Duméril & Bibron, 1839, a typical inhabitant of the forest-floor leaf litter, in an Atlantic Forest area in the state of Rio de Janeiro, southeastern Brazil. The 26 individuals sampled during the study had a mean snout-vent length (SVL) of 36.2 ± 4.2 mm and a mean jaw width (JW) of 4.1 ± 0.5 mm. We did not find differences in SVL between males and females, though the sexes differed in JW when the effect of body size was factored out, with females presenting higher values. The diet of the lizards was composed exclusively of arthropods, especially isopods and orthopterans. The similarity in trophic niches among seasons (volumetric and numerical proportions of prey...

Herpetofauna of an Atlantic rainforest area (Morro São João) in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Almeida-Gomes,Mauricio; Vrcibradic,Davor; Siqueira,Carla C.; Kiefer,Mara C.; Klaion,Thaís; Almeida-Santos,Patrícia; Nascimento,Denise; Ariani,Cristina V.; Borges-Junior,Vitor N.T.; Freitas-Filho,Ricardo F.; van Sluys,Monique; Rocha,Carlos F.D..
We studied the herpetofaunal community from the Atlantic forest of Morro São João, in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, and present data on species composition, richness, relative abundance and densities. We combined three sampling methods: plot sampling, visual encounter surveys and pit-fall traps. We recorded sixteen species of amphibians and nine of reptiles. The estimated densities (based on results of plot sampling) were 4.5 ind/100 m2 for amphibians and 0.8 ind/100 m² for lizards, and the overall density (amphibians and lizards) was 5.3 ind/100 m². For amphibians, Eleutherodactylus and Scinax were the most speciose genera with three species each, and Eleutherodactylus binotatus was the most abundant species (mean density of 3.0 frogs/100 m²). The reptile...

Parameters from the community of leaf-litter frogs from Estação Ecológica Estadual Paraíso, Guapimirim, Rio de Janeiro State, southeastern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Rocha,Carlos F.D.; Vrcibradic,Davor; Kiefer,Mara C.; Siqueira,Carla C.; Almeida-Gomes,Mauricio; Borges Júnior,Vitor N.T.; Hatano,Fábio H.; Fontes,Angélica F.; Pontes,Jorge A.L.; Klaion,Thais; Gil,Lívia O.; Sluys,Monique Van.
We studied the leaf-litter frog community of Estação Ecológica Estadual Paraíso, in Guapimirim, Rio de Janeiro State, southeastern Brazil. Herein we combined three sampling methods (large plots, visual encounter surveys and pit-fall traps) to present data on species composition, richness, relative abundance and densities. The local assemblage of frogs associated to the leaf-litter was composed by 14 species, belonging to nine families. Haddadus binotatus, a direct-developing frog, was the most abundant species in the community. The estimated density of the local leaf-litter frog assemblage based on plot sampling was 4.3 frogs/100 m². Haddadus binotatus had the highest density (1.1 ind/100 m²). Frogs were predominantly found at night. Thoropa miliaris had...
