Determinants of Dietary Quality: Evidence from Bangladesh AgEcon
Rashid, Dewan Arif; Smith, Lisa C.; Rahman, Tauhidur.
Whereas a large number of empirical studies have been devoted to analyzing consumer demand for dietary energy (or dietary quantity), much less attention has been paid to the demand for dietary quality, an equally important aspect of food security. To address this gap in the literature, this paper uses data from a nationally representative household expenditure survey conducted in Bangladesh in 2000 on the food acquisition behavior of 7,440 households over a two week period. Two indicators of dietary quality are employed: household protein availability and household diet diversity. Using two-stage least squares regression to correct for the endogeneity of income, we find significant roles of income, education, gender of household head, and prices of key...

EXPLAINING CHILD MALNUTRITION IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES: A CROSS-COUNTRY ANALYSIS AgEcon
Smith, Lisa C.; Haddad, Lawrence James.
This paper draws on the experience of the 1970-95 period to (1) elucidate some of the main causes of child malnutrition in developing countries; (2) undertake projections of how many children are likely to be malnourished in the year 2020 given current trends; and (3) identify priority actions for reducing malnutrition the most quickly in the coming decades. The analysis is based on country fixed-effects multivariate regression using data from 63 countries. The paper finds four "underlying" determinants to be key factors: health environments, women's education, women's relative status, and per capita food availability. Two "basic" determinants are also found to be important: per capita national incomes and democracy. Due to data scarcities, the role of...

MACROECONOMIC ADJUSTMENT AND THE BALANCE OF BARGAINING POWER IN RURAL WEST AFRICAN HOUSEHOLDS AgEcon
Smith, Lisa C..
The example of cotton-producing households in Burkina Faso is used to investigate (1) how price-shifting macroeconomic adjustment policies affect the balance of bargaining power between spouses in West African households and (2) how the balance of power itself mediates the impact of policies on households' production, income, and welfare.

CAN FAO's MEASURE OF CHRONIC UNDERNOURISHMENT BE STRENGTHENED? AgEcon
Smith, Lisa C.; Nai Ken, Logan.
In its Sixth World Food Survey released at the 1996 World Food Summit, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) reported that 841 million people in developing countries are chronically undernourished. This number and its country- and regional-level disaggregations have proved tremendously useful to countless aid agencies and researchers. In the context of a recent wave of new nationally-representative household food consumption and expenditure data, this paper examines the estimation methodology underlying this food insecurity indicator, which relies on national aggregate measures of food availability and distribution. The paper finds that the measure is methodologically biased toward national food availability and does not fully...

WHY IS CHILD MALNUTRITION LOWER IN URBAN THAN RURAL AREAS? EVIDENCE FROM 36 DEVELOPING COUNTRIES AgEcon
Smith, Lisa C.; Ruel, Marie T.; Ndiaye, Aida.
While ample evidence documents that urban children generally have better nutritional status than their rural counterparts, recent research suggests that urban malnutrition is on the rise. The environment, choices, and opportunities of urbanites differ greatly from those of rural dwellers--from employment conditions to social and family networks to access to health care and other services. Given these differences, understanding the relative importance of the various determinants of child malnutrition in urban and rural areas--and especially whether they differ--is key to designing context-relevant, effective program and policy responses for stemming malnutrition. This study uses Demographic and Health Survey data from 36 developing countries to address the...

Food Insecurity in Sub-Saharan Africa: New Estimates from Household Expenditure Surveys AgEcon
Smith, Lisa C.; Alderman, Harold; Aduayom, Dede.
Reducing food insecurity in the developing world continues to be a major public policy challenge, and one that is complicated by lack of information on the location, severity, and causes of food insecurity. Such information is needed to properly target assistance, evaluate whether progress is achieved, and develop appropriate interventions to help those in need. This research report explores a new method of measuring food insecurity using food data collected as part of household expenditure surveys. Such surveys are routinely undertaken by numerous national governments throughout the developing world, but in the past the resulting food data remained largely unexploited for the purposes of measuring food insecurity. Using data from 12 Sub-Saharan African...

Is Greater Decisionmaking Power of Women Associated With Reduced Gender Discrimination in South Asia? AgEcon
Smith, Lisa C.; Byron, Elizabeth.
Recent research has shown that improving women’s decisionmaking power relative to men’s within households leads to improvements in a variety of well-being outcomes for children. In South Asia, where the influence of women’s power is particularly strong, these outcomes include children’s nutritional status and the quality of feeding and health care practices. Focusing on nutritional status, this paper presents the results of a study investigating whether increases in women’s power have a stronger positive influence on the nutritional status of their daughters than their sons. If so, then increasing women’s power not only improves the well-being of children as a group, but also serves as a force to reduce long-standing discrimination that undermines female...

PUBLIC POLICY, FOOD MARKETS AND HOUSEHOLD COPING STRATEGIES IN BANGLADESH: LESSONS FROM THE 1998 FLOODS AgEcon
del Ninno, Carlo; Dorosh, Paul A.; Smith, Lisa C..
At their peak, the 1998 floods covered two-thirds of Bangladesh, causing severe damage to the major rice crop and threatening the food security of tens of millions of households. Ultimately, well-functioning private markets, suitable government policies, and public and NGO interventions combined with effective private coping strategies to prevent a major post-disaster crisis. In this paper, we highlight the contribution of government policy interventions, including an earlier trade liberalization, to stabilization of rice markets during and after the floods. Then, we examine the impacts of the floods on flood-exposed households using a panel data set covering 750 households in three rounds over a 13-month period, focusing on impacts of the flood on...

SUPPLY RESPONSE OF WEST AFRICAN AGRICULTURAL HOUSEHOLDS: IMPLICATIONS OF INTRAHOUSEHOLD PREFERENCE HETEROGENEITY AgEcon
Smith, Lisa C.; Chavas, Jean-Paul.
This paper explores the implications of preference heterogeneity between wives and husbands in nonresource-pooling rural West African households for the effect of crop price changes on agricultural production, i.e., their supply response. A "semicooperative" game-theoretic model of household decisionmaking, in which household members make unilateral time and income allocation decisions and negotiate over who controls these resources, is proposed. The model is used to show that Pareto efficiency in both production and consumption do not hold. It is then employed to simulate the supply response to cotton price increases accompanying agricultural sector liberalization in Burkina Faso in the early 1980s. The simulated semi-cooperative model predicts the cotton...

Is Food Insecurity More Severe in South Asia or Sub-Saharan Africa?: A Comparative Analysis Using Household Expenditure Survey Data AgEcon
Smith, Lisa C.; Wiesmann, Doris M..
This paper uses data from national household expenditure surveys to explore whether food insecurity is more severe in South Asia or Sub-Saharan Africa. It employs two indicators of the diet quantity dimension of food insecurity, or the inability to access sufficient food: the prevalence of food energy deficiency and the prevalence of severe food energy deficiency. It also employs two indicators of the diet quality dimension, indicating lack of access to nutritious food: the prevalence of low diet diversity and the percent of energy from staple foods. It finds the regions’ food energy deficiency prevalences to be quite close (51 percent in South Asia, 57 percent in Sub-Saharan Africa). However, the prevalence of severe food energy deficiency, which is more...

THE 1998 FLOODS IN BANGLADESH: DISASTER IMPACTS, HOUSEHOLD COPING STRATEGIES, AND RESPONSE AgEcon
del Ninno, Carlo; Dorosh, Paul A.; Smith, Lisa C.; Roy, Dilip.
In 1998,“the flood of the century” covered more than two-thirds of Bangladesh, causing crop losses of 2.04 million tons of rice, an amount equal to 10.45 percent of target production in 1998/99. This flood threatened the health and lives of millions through food shortages caused by crop failure, loss of purchasing power, and the spread of water-borne disease. Yet very few flood-related deaths occurred, and reportedly none was due to food shortages. This report, based on data from a survey of 757 rural households in seven flood-affected regions (thanas) conducted in November and December 1998 and on analysis of secondary data on food grain markets, describes how Government of Bangladesh policy, well-functioning private markets, household coping strategies,...
