1, a—d). S.... |

Good colour naming and colour coding are essential and also a good colour system. Once such a system has been adopted by an International Botanical Congress it is highly desirable that it be employed universally. To my way of thinking the author of this work is correct in assuming that the system most suitable for this purpose is the Munsell system. I myself used it in describing the colours of Taraxacum achenes. Its three “co-ordinates”, hue, value and chroma, are in agreement with psychological experience and can be translated in physical unities, as is done by the I.S.C.C. (Inter Society Color Counsel) and the N.B.S. (National Bureau of Standards) (America). This is a requisite of normalization. |

1. Introduction. The genus Taraxacum, lacking in the tropical regions, is widely distributed in the northern hemisphere and only locally found in the southern one. The evolutional history has been discussed by von Handel-Mazzetti; though this seems to be a speculative business, according to its extrapolative character, his study contains many valuable thoughts. He places the origin of Taraxacum in western central Asia, with which I can agree. The density of sections is also greatest here. The genus in evolution expanded to the East, the North and the West; though partly interrupted, the tracks can be more or less reconstructed. From a morphological point of view, he concluded to the existence of species of lower and higher organisation level, the latter... |

Description of Taraxacum kernianum Van Soest, Hagendijk & Zevenbergen, spec, nov., a species formerly confounded with T. hamatiforme Dahlst. The new species is known from the Netherlands and Belgium but may be found in collections of T. hamatiforme from other localities within the area of this species. The type-specimen was collected in moist grassland between Boxtel and Vught, prov. N.-Brabant, 22.4.1960, by K. B. van Brakel & J. L. van Soest (herb. Van Soest 39618). |

This charming and handy book printed on excellent paper, with its numerous clear pictures of well-known Malayan plants, reminds one in many ways of Merrill’s “Plant Life of the Pacific World” (MacMillan 1946, New York), which has perhaps served Prof. Holttum as an example. Its size being only slightly smaller than Merrill’s book and the area covered being very considerably smaller, its descriptions of plants are naturally more detailed; the more so as only a choice has been made, in which the special interests of the author — ferns, orchids, gingers — are evident though not predominant. The plants described are not regionally arranged. The 17 chapters are rather headed by names of life-forms, striking organs, and special habitats. As is pointed out in the... |
