Comparison of soil preparation methods for direct-seeded rice in Tung Samrit area was conducted in order to evaluate the effectiveness of suitable dry direct seeding technique. The experiment was carried out in farmer’ fields in wet season 2012 using an RCB design with 4 replicates. Five treatments were tested consisting of 1) 2 ploughs, sowing and raking, 2) 1 plough, sowing and covering dry soil using a rotary, 3) 1 plough, sowing and covering moist soil using a rotary, 4) 2 ploughs, sowing and covering dry soil using a rotary, and 5) 2 ploughs, sowing and covering moist soil using a rotary. The results showed that the treatment 1 gave the highest plant density of 374 plants/sq.m. Both treatment 4 and 5 gave highest plant height of 142 – 144 cm. However,...

Rainfed lowland rice condition in northeast Thailand is diverse; hence understanding of rice genotype response to environmental condition is important. The objective of this study was to identify rice varieties suitable for rainfed lowland under variable climatic conditions in Northeast. Environmental conditions were classified under variable climatic conditions. Total of 6 rice varieties were used; 3 varieties from each group of photoperiod sensitivity and insensitivity. The experiment was conducted under upper positions (14 locations) and lower positions (13 locations) in wet season 2013-2014. Combined analysis across environments showed that, there was difference adaptation of genotypes to different group of environmental conditions. Percent of...

Remote Sensing - based Information and Insurance for Crops in Emerging Economics (RIICE) is a collaborative project between 3 organizations: the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), SARMAP and the Rice Department of Thailand. The experiment was conducted during 2013 - 2015 in the areas under responsibility of Suphan Buri Rice Research Center and Nakhon Ratchasrima Rice Research Center. The satellite COSMO Skymed, stripmap type with 3-meter resolution and 40 x 40 kilometer-wide image, was used at Nakhon Ratchasrima, while the satellite COSMO Skymed, scansar type of 15-meter resolution and 100 x 100 kilometer-wide image, was used at Suphan Buri. The different fields survey was conducted to collect geographic coordinates, crop management by farmers,...

Zoning of rice production potential in Thai rice area has been conducted from 2000 to 2013. The objectives of the project were 1) to define the potential of rice area in Thailand in term of soil suitability and productivity, 2) to create map of rice production zoning with appropriate recommendation. Methodology to run the project consisted of secondary data collection, field survey, crop cutting, field experiment, and mapping. The research found that total of 12.6 M ha of rice areas in Thailand it was suitable for rice production about 8.2 M ha. Rice soil was more fertile in the central plain as compared to other region. Most of the farmer grew recommended rice varieties. There were three major groups of growing rice variety, jasmine rice, white rice, and...

Thai Agricultural
Sommai Lertna.
The purposes of this project were to evaluate situation of climate change and its impact on rainfed lowland rice production in Northeastern region, farmers’ adaptation, their selfsubsistance and learning process in order to develop sustainable production system, farmer group network and dissemination process among the network. This present paper reported the progress results for year 2013 wet season which conducted at 16 sites. Results from wet season 2012 showed that there was severe variation of rainfalling in early season which caused unpredictable start of growing season. This leaded to delayed in planting, particularly transplanting which found to be from July to September. Thus, our work on wet season 2013 emphasised on predicting of optimum planting...

Variable climatic conditions affect rice production and also farmer livelihood, particularly rainfed lowland rice in northeast Thailand. The results showed that there was variation in distribution and amount of rainfall. Therefore, start and end of growing seasons were unpredictable. The objectives of this study were to test rice varieties in farmer fields under different climatic conditions and paddy positions and farmers’ acceptance and adoption of introduced rice varieties. Field experiments were conducted in three locations: Sakon Nakhon Bueng Kan and Nong Bua Lam Phu provinces and compared at three different planting dates. Total of six and eight rice varieties were used in 2013 and 2014, respectively. Results showed that grain yields on late planting...
