The genus Pseudoscopelus Lutken, 1892 is easily distinguished from the other Chiasmodontidae by the presence of well-defined rows of photophores. Until 2005, eight species were known. Pseudoscopelus scriptus was the first described by Lutken in 1892, then P. sagamianus by Tanaka in 1908, P. stellatus by Beebe in 1932 and P. altipinnis by Parr in 1933. Later in 1934, Fowler described three new species: P. microps, P. cephalus, and P. obtusifrons. These three species, known from only one specimen each, have not been recorded since. Lastly, an easily distinguishable species, P. scutatus, was discovered by Krefft in 1971. In a recent review, Prokoviev and Kukuev (2005, 2006) confirmed the validity of all species and described a new one P. aphos,... |

In 2005, a flying fish Cheilopogon cyanopterus, which doesn't figure among the Europeans faunas although pointed out in 1973, is captured in the Bay of Biscay. Following the catch of a Cubiceps gracilis near the coast in Britain, the authors recapitulating the former descriptions indicate that adults of this oceanic species remain in the open sea. Only juveniles come, rarely, to the coast. The species figures in the diet of common dolphins, striped dolphins, swordfishes and tunas. NOT CONTROLLED OCR |

During 2002, along the French coasts, three living specimens of Regalecus glesne are recorded, one of them at Cap Ferret, first record in the Bay of Biscay, two others in the Mediterranean sea between Marseille and Cassis. Among the trawl catches in the Bay of Biscay by N/O "Thalassa", we have observed two specimens of Chlorophthalmus agassizi, one of Callionymus reticulatus recorded for the first time along the Poitou-Charentes coasts, four of Mentodus rostratus and one of Photostylus pycnoptcrus. One species, fished in 1999 in the Bay of Biscay, determinated during 2001 according to two photographs, Aristostomias tittmanni, is recorded for the first time in the European Atlantic. Six other species, five fished with a pelagic trawl, Bathylagichthys greyae, Melanostomias bartonbeani, Macroparalepis affinis, Lobianchia gemellarii and Melanonus zugmayeri, one fished with a bottom trawl Ophidion barbatum, were recorded for the first time in tbe Bay of Biscay. The pelagic ichtyological fauna about -500 m, -1000m and -1500 m depth has changed between 1966 to 1968 and 2001 with a decrease of temperate cold affinities species, mostly Benthosema glaciale, and an increase of temperate warm affinities species, mostly Ceratoscopelus maderensis. During 2004, Caranx crysos and Echeneis naucrates are caught in the Bay of Biscay, at north of their known repartition. The capture in our waters of two specimens of Cyttopsis rosea, the eighth specimen of Trachinotus ovatus and six Lagocephalus lagocephalus are mentioned. NOT CONTROLLED OCR |

The north-east Atlantic grey seal, Halichoerus grypus, is widely distributed along the European coastline from northern Russia to France, with the core population centred around Scotland. To date, very little is known of the diet of the species at the southern margin of the species range. However, because grey seal numbers have been increasing over the last few decades in France, the issue of their potential interactions with coastal fisheries is frequently raised. The diet of grey seal in the Molene Archipelago was investigated by combining scat, stomach content and fatty acid analyses, since all three approaches have complementary potentials to reveal feeding habits of a predator. A total of 145 scats mostly of moulting adult males, 14 stomach contents... |
