Chickens foraging in the woods Organic Eprints
Steenfeldt, Sanna.
Organic chickens should forage in the woods, should increase their intake of plants and insects from attractive outdoor areas and should be revitalised with new breeds that exhibit a more natural foraging behaviour. These are some of the initiatives that will contribute to a more diverse, reliable and robust organic broiler production and which will be investigated in a new project in order to increase market share of the organic production.

Deposition of carotenoids in egg yolk by short-term supplement of coloured carrot (Daucus carota) varieties as forage material for egg-laying hens Organic Eprints
Hammershoj, Marianne; Kidmose, Ulla; Steenfeldt, Sanna.
BACKGROUND: Supplying egg-laying hens with different forage materials may influence egg production and quality. The aim of this study was to examine the short-term effects of standard feed plus 70 g day−1 per hen of three coloured carrot varieties (orange, yellow and purple) as forage material in comparison with a standard feed control on egg production, egg yolk colour and deposition of carotenoids in the yolk. RESULTS: Carrot supplementation reduced feed intakes significantly, but not on a dry matter basis. Orange carrot treatment significantly reduced egg mass production, whereas yellow and purple carrot treatments did not differ from the control. Egg and yolk weights of all carrot-supplemented treatmentswere significantly lower than those of the...

Fokus på robusthed i økologisk slagtekyllingeproduktion Organic Eprints
Norup, Liselotte R.; Ricarda M., Engberg; Steenfeldt, Sanna; Horsted, Klaus; Juul-madsen, Helle Risdahl.

Effect of Clover grass protein concentrate on performance, digestibility and egg quality of laying hens fed 100% organic diet Organic Eprints
Khanal, Tanka; Steenfeldt, Sanna.
From the beginning of 2018, inclusion of non-organic protein sources are not allowed in the diet of 100% organic poultry in Europe. In this situation, a major nutritional challenge is to make sustainable supply of organic protein and amino acid in competitive price. This necessity triggers to search alternative protein sources for sustainable organic egg production. Clover grass protein concentrate (CPC) is dried protein concentrate prepared by pulping clover grass mixture mainly containing Red clover to obtain green juice followed by fermentation, centrifugation and drying. The crude protein, lysine and methionine content in CPC were determined to be 355.6, 20.3 and 6.3 g/kg dry matter respectively. This research was carried out to study the effect of...

Influence of Blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) and Starfish (Asterias rubens) meals on production performance, egg quality and apparent total tract digestibility of nutrients of laying hens Organic Eprints
Afrose, Sadia; Hammershøj, Marianne; Nørgaard, Jan Værum; Engberg, Ricarda M.; Steenfeldt, Sanna.
The aim of the study was to evaluate mussel meal and starfish meals as protein sources for organic layers by studying the effect on production performance, nutrient digestibility and egg quality. A total of 300 Hisex white laying hens (20-week old) were distributed randomly to 6 dietary treatment groups, each with five replicates, including a control diet providing fish meal, 3 diets providing mussel meal (4, 8 and 12 g/100 g) and 2 diets providing starfish meal (4 and 8 g/100 g). Laying rate, egg mass, feed conversion ratio, mortality and live weight of the hens did not differ among treatments. The egg weight was not different from the egg weights of control diets, but the inclusion of 4 g mussel meal resulted in a lower (P < 0.05) egg weight than 8 g...

The transition to 100% organic feed ingredients for organic livestock is expected to take effect from January 1st 2020 in Europe. In order to contribute to the goal of 100% use of organic and regional feed for monogastrics, this knowledge synthesis “Feeding monogastrics 100% organic and regionally produced feed“ aims to describe: • the protein need for organic monogastric animals (pigs, layers and broilers), including different breeds and rearing conditions • different protein feed resources, mostly new or not commonly used protein sources, their nutrient content, production prerequisites, and their potential feeding value • small-scale, on-farm equipment for feed processing • different feeding strategies. The knowledge synthesis should enable...

Organic egg quality parameters influenced by feed, hen line and forage material Organic Eprints
Hammershøj, Marianne; Steenfeldt, Sanna.
Organic eggs make out >15% of the Danish shell egg market. Consumers buy organic eggs based on environmental and animal welfare arguments. However, there is a need for high product quality and diversity of organic eggs to increase the market share further. The overall objective was to investigate different strategies for production of organic eggs of high and differentiable quality regarding appearance (yolk colour and carotenoid composition), sensory quality, shell strength and egg albumen protein content providing more diversified eggs compared with conventional eggs. Specific objectives were to study the effect of hen genotype (layer-type versus “dual purpose”- type), identify new protein feed sources for organic laying hens in order to improve the...

Alternative Protein sources in poultry nutrition Organic Eprints
Steenfeldt, Sanna; Lübeck, Mette; Engberg, Ricarda M..
The supply of protein and essential amino acids will undoubtedly be a great challenge for European poultry nutritionists when the transition to 100% organic feed ingredients for organic poultry production becomes reality. To avoid costly and energy consuming oversea transports connected to the import of soya beans, much research effort has focussed on the exploitation of alternative locally grown protein sources to increase the sustainability of organic production systems. Besides the cultivation of protein crops like legumes (peas, lupin, and faba been) and seeds (sunflower, rapeseed), new approaches including the feeding of protein concentrates from green biomass obtained by bio-refinement are discussed. At present, many of the alternative protein...
