Miscellaneous botanical notes XX Naturalis
Steenis, C.G.G.J. van.
In March 1962 Mr. A. Hoogerwerf collected swamp and savannah plants in the extreme South of New Guinea, about 25 km WNW. of Merauke, near a place Kurik, c. 10 km north of the mouth of the Kali Kumbe. There the Government was planning to start a mechanical rice plant with polders, as has been done in Suriname. As the experimental plot was menaced by too many birds, Mr. Hoogerwerf, an ornithologist, was making an investigation of the avifauna and collected plants in and around the marshes in order to verify later on which plants the birds fed. Among his collection there were many interesting plant species, especially sedges; Fimbristylis blepharolepis Kern was even a new species. Cyperus cf. angustatus R.Br., Rhynchospora heterochaeta Blake, and Fimbristylis...

Miscellaneous botanical notes XXIII Naturalis
Steenis, C.G.G.J. van.
A sheet of the BSIP collections, gathered in Vanikoro Island, Santa Cruz group, near the proper Solomon Is., had tentatively been identified as probably belonging to Euphorbiaceae, but was discarded by Airy Shaw in 1962 and now again in 1974. Closer examination showed it to belong to Melicytus, a suggestion made by Dr. R. C. Bakhuizen van den Brink Jr. This genus is distributed in the West Pacific Islands, from New Zealand to Samoa; it was mapped by Van Balgooy in Pacific Plant Areas (2, 1966, 103). Though the specimen is male, we assume it to belong to Melicytus, not Hymenanthera. This represents a considerable extension of the generic area. Comparing the floral structure it is distinctly different from the Samoan form and also from M. ramiflorus Forst....

The Presumed Pleistocene Glaciation of the Southeast Brazilian Itatiaia Mountains Naturalis
Steenis, C.G.G.J. van.
In volume 53 of the Arquivos do Museu Nacional (pp. 1-54, 15 fig., 6 tables) there is an interesting ecological account on the vegetation of the famous Itatiaia Range by Mr. F. Segadas-Vianna and Leda Dau (co-author on climatology). The advantage of these two papers (vegetation and climate) is that they provide pertinent data and a fair description.

Malaysian plant collectors and collections being a Cyclopaedia of botanical exploration in Malaysia and a guide to the concerned literature up to the year 1950 Naturalis
Steenis-Kruseman, M.J. van; Steenis, C.G.G.J. van.
As long ago as 1926-27, during my last two years at Utrecht University, when studying the taxonomy and distribution of the Malaysian Bignoniaceae (Thesis 1927), I felt the need for a reference work in localizing inadequately labelled specimens. Material collected in the 19th century, especially that of BLUME, KORTHALS, JUNGHUHN, ZIPELIUS,¹ MOTLEY, HORSFIELD, etc. bear scant notes. Either these collectors did not realize the future value of full data or their notes were not mounted on the sheets in the herbarium and were often subsequently lost. I have also observed a tendency in some authors of tropical plant species in that period to underrate the importance of the locality because of their belief that tropical plants occurred everywhere in the tropics,...

Bignoniaceae Naturalis
Steenis, C.G.G.J. van.
Trees, shrubs, lianas, very rarely herbaceous (extra-Mal.); twigs often lenticellate and nodes with gland fields; spines very rare (extra-Mal.). Stipules absent. Leaves simple or mostly compound (digitate or impari-1-4-pinnate), (in Mal.) decussate, rarely in whorls of 3-4, often provided with glands underneath, in the New World often provided with terminal tendrils, rarely scattered or in pseudo-whorls (extra- Mal.); domatia sometimes present (fig. 8b, 23h). Inflorescences bracteate, cymose, but not rarely thyrses contracted to racemiform or racemose inflorescences, or even reduced to solitary flowers (extra-Mal.), terminal, axillary or from the old wood. Pedicels mostly with 1-2 bracteoles. Flowers usually very showy, rather large, bisexual, articulate...

Addenda, corrigenda et emendanda Naturalis
Steenis, C.G.G.J. van.
As was done in the preceding volume p. 592-599 it seemed useful to correct some errors which have crept into the text of volumes 4 and 5 as well as to add some additional data, new records, and new species or other taxa which came to our knowledge and are worth recording. Though we strive to make this a work of precision I have given up all hope that I will ever succeed in editing a volume in which no corrections in references and authority of taxa will appear to be necessary. This may be possible in a century from now when the entries in Index Kewensis are completed, when all books have nicely been extracted, and their dates of publication have been fixed once and for all by zealous librarians.

”Nomenclaturally extinct” works Naturalis
Baehni, Ch.; Holttum, R.E.; Robyns, W.; Steenis, C.G.G.J. van.
One of the causes of instability in botanical nomenclature is found in that our predecessors did not verify the nomenclatural bearing of an unknown number of (often very rare) works. In PENNANT’s 4-volume ”Outlines of the Globe” (1800), a standard geographical work at its time (1) a chapter was found recently devoted to a ”Flora Indica”. The compiler had unintentionally made some name changes which remained unrecorded in scientific botany. Not long ago ROTHMALER unearthed many such works (2). It must be realized that, quite probably, many other works will be detected necessitating future unexpected and undesirable name changes. Our proposal is to exclude, onwards of 1951, for botanical nomenclature, all works which, up till that date, have not been used...

The herb flora of Taiwan or How to master a Flora without types and with only a few books Naturalis
Steenis, C.G.G.J. van.
My visit to and trips in Taiwan, in 1966, brought me into close contact with the wonderfully rich and varied flora of this large island which is fairly easily accessible if one speaks Chinese or is accompanied by Chinese companions, as was my privilege. As is well known the woody flora of Taiwan is tolerably well known, by the excellent work of Kanehira (1936), followed by the modern works of Prof. Tang-shui Liu (2 vols, 1960-1962) and Prof. Li (1963).

Note on Ulmus in Malesia (Ulmaceae) Naturalis
Touw, A.; Steenis, C.G.G.J. van.
Already in 1922 the Netherlands Indian Forest Service had collected Ulmus in North Sumatra and in South Celebes, which was published by F. H. Endert in his Keys to Neth. Indian Trees based on Vegetative Characters (Med. Proefst. Boschwezen 20, 1928, 163). Subsequently Merrill identified the N. Sumatran specimens collected by the Banghams as U. lanceaefolia Roxb. (Contr. Arn. Arb. 8, 1934, 44). We have now several collections but they are all sterile.

As was done in the preceding volumes, it seemed useful to correct some errors which have crept into the text of volumes 4-7 as well as to add additional data, new records and references to new species which came to my knowledge and are worth recording. Also there are alternative opinions about generic and specific delimitation on most of which comments are given. Printing errors have only been corrected if they might give rise to confusion.

Parasites as plant taxonomists Naturalis
Steenis, C.G.G.J. van.
Prof. J.A. Nannfeldt gave in a lecture (publ. in Acta Univ. Skrifter rörande Uppsala Univ. 17, 1970) an interesting summary of Fungi as plant taxonomists, distinguishing 4 cases: 1) isolated fungus restricted to one species, not on other related species, 2) an isolated single fungus on a supraspecific taxon of hosts, 3) closely related fungi on closely related species of hosts, 4) parasite genera or higher taxa confined to a special super-generic host taxon. All cases he illustrated by examples. In certain cases there must have been ’co-evolution’ of parasite and host. He mentioned that the importance of parasitic fungi as indicators of taxonomic affinity has been utilized in the past. Samuelsson used it in 1913 for example to suggest affinity of Empetrum...

Notes. Revegetation of Krakatau Naturalis
Steenis, C.G.G.J. van.
Some news was received on the revegetation of Krakatau, and the small new cone, Anak Krakatau (Krakatau Jr) as visited by a party in August 1951. Krakatau. The camp was made in the SE.corner of the island. In several places the old substratum has been traced, and in the basal layer of the ash covers, which attain sometimes 30 m thickness, remains are found of former woody share vegetation. Bases of tree trunks have partly been buried in their upright position. Some of these are charred, and have apparently been burned during the eruption; others are not charred, or have been charred only very superficially.

Regional floras, a significant modern trend in plant taxonomy Naturalis
Steenis, C.G.G.J. van.
Besides through monographic work plant taxonomy has a second way of framing synthetic attempts and that is by compiling Florulas and Floras, containing a complete account of the flora of parts of the globe, of cities, islets, islands, states, countries, or continents. Irrespective of their style, concise or elaborate, their elaboration is closely connected with the history of the exploration of the areas they deal with. And the latter is again closely connected with the history of the opening and discovering of the world by science, that is human history. The course of the history of the botanical exploration and the compilation of Floras, small and large, was besides to a high degree dependent on the activity of botanical explorers and botanical centres...

Miscellaneous botanical notes XV Naturalis
Steenis, C.G.G.J. van.
In our revision of Caprifoliaceae in Fl. Mal. I, 4 (1951) 175 seq. we omitted to mention Weigelia fallax described by Miquel from Lembang, West Java, collected by Korthals. The specimen was concealed among cultivated specimens and turned up recently. There is no doubt that this specimen is derived from an ornamental in the Javanese hills. We have sent this material to Prof. Hara who found it conspecific with Weigela coraeensis Thunb. It is often cultivated in Japan, especially as a hedge plant.

Keys for identifying Malaysian plants Naturalis
Steenis, C.G.G.J. van.
The Flora Malesiana is not preceded by a general key enabling one to identify any unknown native or wild plant to the family or genus to which it belongs. This is certainly a serious lack and presents a formidable handicap to inexperienced taxonomists in rapid naming current collections. However, there are several forcing arguments for omitting—at present—such an attempt which in itself would present no facile task, and could be accomplished only by a taxonomist thoroughly acquainted with the Malaysian flora. One could of course use some world key as a basis and cut out the entries leading to genera or families not represented in the Malaysian flora, but this procedure would be unsatisfactory, specially as these world keys make little use of vegetative...

Critical notes on New Guinea plants described by A. Gilli Naturalis
Steenis, C.G.G.J. van.
Two new genera and nineteen new species of Dicotyledons from Papua New Guinea collected and described by A. Gilli (1980) have been examined by specialists. These families are Begoniaceae, Cruciferae, Elaeocarpaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Hypericaceae, Leguminosae, Rosaceae, Rubiaceae, Saxifragaceae, and Sterculiaceae. Both new genera are reduced: Melachone to Amaracarpus (Rub.), Disaster to Commersonia (Sterc.). Supposed new generic records to Malesia proved erroneous: a new Thelygonum belongs to Nertera (Rub.), and a Trochiscus to Nasturtium (Cruc.); the Viburnum from Papua is a Psychotria (Rub.). All species are reduced to those already known. It is advocated as undesirable to describe novelties from odd tropical plant collections.

Miscellaneous notes on New Guinea plants X Naturalis
Steenis, C.G.G.J. van.
This remarkable rheophytic fern which is often massed in cracks of rocks in or near cascades in streams subject to sudden overflows had a peculiar distribution, being rather common in such habitats in Sumatra, Malaya, and Borneo, but also found on Mt. Salhutu in Ambon (Moluccas). It has recently also turned up in East New Guinea. EAST NEW GUINEA. Territory of New Guinea: West Sepik Dist., Telefomin Subdist., in Prospect Creek near Frieda R., 4°42' S, 14i°48' E, at 450 m, on large rocks in streambed (PH Creek), NGF 42540 E. E. Henty & D.
