In vielen Ländern ist in den letzten Jahrzehnten ein deutlicher Anstieg der Milchleistung bei Kühen in der Milchviehhaltung zu beobachten. Gleichzeitig ging bei steigendem Kraftfuttereinsatz der Weidegrasanteil in den Milchviehrationen zurück und wurden die Kühe auch größer und schwerer. Fasst man die Literaturergebnisse zur Eignung von Hochleistungstieren für die (konsequente) Weidehaltung zusammen, dann zeigt sich folgendes Bild: • Die tägliche Weidefutteraufnahme ist im Gegensatz zur Stallhaltung mit 15–20 kg T pro Tier stärker begrenzt. In a research project six dairy farms (5 organic, 1 low input) in mountainous regions of Austria were supervised in converting to a seasonal low-input dairy production system based on grazing. Within an observation period of three years (October 1st, 2004 – September 30th, 2007) a strict annual cycle in milk production and reproduction could be implemented on two farms only. In average a pasture proportion of 42 % (26–61 %) of the total feeding ration per year could be determined, depending on the farm specific conditions and the implementation level of this low input strategy. On the basis of calculations the effects of dairy cow life weight on feed efficiency and concentrate demand for a whole lactation have been investigated. The results show, that the annual milk yield is not a sufficient efficiency indicator because efficiency is strongly affected by the life weight. To compensate for an increase in life weight of 100 kg the annual milk yield of dairy cows must increase per 12-13 % to achieve the same feed conversion efficiency (kg ECM/kg DM, kg ECM/MJ NEL). Given this, heavier cows need a higher proportion of concentrate in the annual ration because feed intake increases to a lower extent than the energy requirements.
