From In Situ to satellite observations of pelagic Sargassum distribution and aggregation in the Tropical North Atlantic Ocean ArchiMer
Ody, Anouck; Thibaut, Thierry; Berline, Léo; Changeux, Thomas; André, Jean-michel; Chevalier, Cristèle; Blanfuné, Aurélie; Blanchot, Jean; Ruitton, Sandrine; Stiger-pouvreau, Valerie; Connan, Solène; Grelet, Jacques; Aurelle, Didier; Guéné, Mathilde; Bataille, Hubert; Bachelier, Celine; Guillemain, Dorian; Schmidt, Natascha; Fauvelle, Vincent; Guasco, Sophie; Ménard, Frédéric.
The present study reports on observations carried out in the Tropical North Atlantic in summer and autumn 2017, documenting Sargassum aggregations using both ship-deck observations and satellite sensor observations at three resolutions (MSI-10 m, OLCI-300 m, VIIRS-750 m and MODIS-1 km). Both datasets reported that in summer, Sargassum aggregations were mainly observed off Brazil and near the Caribbean Islands, while they accumulated near the African coast in autumn. Based on in situ observations, we propose a five-class typology allowing standardisation of the description of in situ Sargassum raft shapes and sizes. The most commonly observed Sargassum raft type was windrows, but large rafts composed of a quasi-circular patch hundreds of meters wide were...

Impact of nine macroalgal diets on growth and initial reproductive investment in juvenile abalone Haliotis tuberculata ArchiMer
Roussel, Sabine; Caralp, Claire; Leblanc, Catherine; Le Grand, Fabienne; Stiger-pouvreau, Valerie; Coulombet, Céline; Le Goïc, Nelly; Huchette, Sylvain.
The commercial culture of Haliotis tuberculata has recently started in Europe. As abalone is herbivorous, the use of local collected algae as feed may appear advantageous. The nutritional value of eight monospecific seaweed diets was studied using Palmaria palmata (Rhodophyta), filamentous algae, mainly Gracilaria sp. (Rhodophyta), Enteromorpha sp. and Ulva lactuca (Chlorophyta), together with Saccharina latissima, Saccorhiza polyschides, Laminaria digitata and Laminaria hyperborea (Ochrophyta, Phaeophyceae) and a mixed macroalgal diet. An integrative approach consisted in monitoring the seasonal composition changes of these algae in terms of protein, lipid, soluble carbohydrate, fatty acid and amino-acid contents, and to relate it to seasonal growth and...

Assessment of the spatial variability of phenolic contents and associated bioactivities in the invasive alga Sargassum muticum sampled along its European range from Norway to Portugal ArchiMer
Tanniou, A.; Vandanjon, L.; Incera, M.; Serrano Leon, Esteban; Husa, V.; Le Grand, Jacqueline; Nicolas, Jean-louis; Poupart, N.; Kervarec, N.; Engelen, A.; Walsh, R.; Guerard, F.; Bourgougnon, N.; Stiger-pouvreau, Valerie.
Sargassum muticum, an invasive brown macroalga presently distributed along European Atlantic coasts from southern Portugal to the south coast of Norway, was studied on a large geographical scale for its production of phenolic compounds with potential industrial applications and their chemical and biological activities. S. muticum can produce high biomass in Europe, which could be exploited to supply such compounds. S. muticum was collected in Portugal, Spain, France, Ireland and Norway (three sites/country) to examine the effect of the latitudinal cline and related environmental factors. Assays focused particularly on polyphenols and their activities. Crude acetone–water extracts were purified using solid phase extraction (SPE) and antioxidant and...

Marine green macroalgae: a source of natural compounds with mineralogenic and antioxidant activities ArchiMer
Surget, Gwladys; Roberto, Vania P.; Le Lann, Klervi; Mira, Sara; Guerard, Fabienne; Laize, Vincent; Poupart, Nathalie; Leonor Cancela, M.; Stiger-pouvreau, Valerie.
Marine macroalgae represent a valuable natural resource for bioactive phytochemicals with promising applications in therapeutics, although they remain largely under-exploited. In this work, the potential of two marine green macroalgae (Cladophora rupestris and Codium fragile) as a source of bioactive phenolic compounds was explored, and antioxidant, mineralogenic, and osteogenic activities were evaluated. For each species, a crude hydroalcoholic extract (CE) was prepared by solid/liquid extraction and fractionated by liquid/liquid purification into an ethyl acetate fraction (EAF) enriched in phenolic compounds and an aqueous fraction (AF). Antioxidant activity, assessed through radical scavenging activity and reducing power assay, was increased in EAF...

Seasonal variation in the antivibrio activity of two organic extracts from two red seaweed: Palmaria palmata and the introduced Grateloupia turuturu against the abalone pathogen Vibrio harveyi ArchiMer
Garcia-bueno, Nuria; Dumay, Justine; Guerin, Thomas; Turpin, Vincent; Paillard, Christine; Stiger-pouvreau, Valerie; Pouchus, Yves-francois; Aitor Marin-atucha, Arnaldo; Decottignies, Priscilla; Fleurence, Joel.
The wide polarity range and highly polar compounds of two selected red seaweed, Grateloupia turuturu and Palmaria palmata were extracted using two different types of solvent, dichloromethane/methanol and methanol/water. Monthly in vitro antibacterial activities were studied using the microplate method against the marine bacteria Vibrio harveyi strain ORM4, known to infect abalone. Inhibition, slowdown and delay of Vibrio harveyi growth were investigated. Polar compounds of seaweed showed an activity against the abalone pathogen. The best activity was recorded from P. palmata collected in spring, with an inhibition of 7.9% of the bacterial growth. Preliminary 1H NMR profiles identified the differences between the extracts.

Photo-protective compounds in red macroalgae from Brittany: Considerable diversity in mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) ArchiMer
Lalegerie, Fanny; Lajili, Sirine; Bedoux, Gilles; Taupin, Laure; Stiger-pouvreau, Valerie; Connan, Solène.
To cope with the biotic and abiotic stresses experienced within their environment, marine macroalgae have developed certain defence mechanisms including the synthesis of photo-protective molecules against light and particularly harmful UV radiation. The aim of this study was to screen selected red algae, a highly diverse phylogenetic group, for the production of photo-protective molecules. The pigment content and composition (i.e. chlorophyll-a, phycobiliproteins and carotenoids) and the composition of mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) were studied in 40 species of red macroalgae collected in Brittany (France), at two distinct periods (i.e. February and July 2017). A high inter-specific variability was demonstrated in terms of pigment content and MAA...

Le Lann, Klervi; Surget, Gwladys; Couteau, Celine; Coiffard, Laurence; Cerantola, Stephane; Gaillard, Fanny; Larnicol, Maud; Zubia, Mayalen; Guerard, Fabienne; Poupart, Nathalie; Stiger-pouvreau, Valerie.
The present study focused on a brown macroalga (Halidrys siliquosa), with a particular emphasis on polyphenols and their associated biological activities. Two fractions were obtained by liquid/liquid purification from a crude hydroethanolic extract: (i) an ethyl acetate fraction and (ii) an aqueous fraction. Total phenolic contents and antioxidant activities of extract and both fractions were assessed by in vitro tests (Folin-Ciocalteu test, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, reducing power assay, superoxide anion scavenging assay, and beta-carotene-linoleic acid system). For the most active fraction, i.e., the ethyl acetate fraction, the oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) value, antibacterial activities, and sunscreen...
