The presence of psilocybin and its monomethyl analogue baeocystin is for the first time demonstrated in five taxa of the genus Inocybe, viz. I. coelestium, I. corydalina var. corydalina, I. corydalina var. erinaceomorpha, I. haemacta and I. aeruginascens. These taxa are characterized by a glaucous coloration of the stipe. A sixth taxon, I. calamistrata, which also has a blue-green stipe was found to be exempt of psilocybin and other methylated tryptamines. Negative results were also obtained for other Inocybes. Muscarin is absent in the psilocybincontaining species. However, no relation between taxonomic position and the presence of either compound seems to exist. |

The occurrence of tryptamine derivatives and urea in Panaeolus cyanescens, also known as Copelandia cyanescens, from Australia, Hawaii and Thailand was investigated. All 70 collections contained psilocin, serotonin and urea. Those from Hawaii were also relatively rich in psilocybin, whereas the species from Australia and Thailand were virtually exempt of this compound. Many collections also contained detectable amounts of precursors as tryptophan, tryptamine and baeocystin, but 5-hydroxytryptophan — widely encountered in many other Panaeoloideae — was found to be absent in all samples. The role of these 4- and 5-hydroxylated tryptamine derivatives in the metabolism of the fungus and their possible chemotaxonomic significance is briefly discussed.... |

The high arsenic concentrations reported in literature for Laccaria amethystina were amply confirmed. In addition, it was demonstrated that Laccaria fraterna also accumulates the element, whereas in other species of Laccaria the phenomenon was far less outspoken. Few other basidiomycetes proved to have an affinity for the toxic element. The arsenic concentrations in the principal edible mushrooms of commerce were found to be very low, i.e. on the average 0.5 mg/kg on dry matter. Among the ascomycetes Sarcosphaera coronaria was recognized as an accumulating species. The arsenic content of four collections ranged from 360-2130 mg/kg with an average of 872 mg/kg on dry matter. |

According to literature, the manganese content of most basidiomycetes fluctuates between 10 and 60 mg/kg, whereas the iron levels range from 100-500 mg/kg (both expressed on dry weight). The present authors report that bioconcentration of manganese is a distinguishing feature of the Panaeoloideae, as demonstrated by the analysis of 44 collections representing 15 taxons. Carpophores generally contain between 250 and 2500 mg/kg on dry weight, and, with the notable exception of Panaeolus semiovatus, P. antillarum and P. phalaenarum, their iron content is 2 to 3 times lower. This phenomenon was not observed in members of related genera such as Psathyrella and Coprinus. |
