Whereas in fishes several osteomas (Bell, 1793; Gervais, 1875; Bland-Sutton, 1885 ; Plehn, 1906 ; Schroeders, 1908 ; Fiebiger, 1909 ; Williamson, 1913 ; Beatti, 1916 ; Kazama, 1924 ; Sagawa, 1925; Williams, 1929; Takahashi, 1929; Thomas, 1932, 1933; Lucké and Schlumberger, not published, see the publication of Schlumberger and Lucké, 1948) and some osteosarcomas (Wahlgren, 1873 ; Murray, 1909 ; Williams, 1929 ; Thomas, 1932) have been described, in amphibians only one case of a doubtful osteogenic sarcoma (Ohlmacher, 1898) has been found and in reptiles one case of an osteoma (Moodie, 1923). Therefore, the multiple osteomas, which we were in a position to study in an adult female of the lizard Lacerta viridis, is probably the first case of this tumour... |

Several cases of deformities in the spinal column were described in fishes, viz. lordosis in the bitterling Rhodeus amarus) by ROTH (1922), in the minnow (Phoxinus phoxinus) by ROTH (1922), in the pike (Esox lucius) by ROTH (1922) and PLEHN (1924); kyphosis in the toothcarps (Cyprinodontidae) by ROTH (1922); scoliosis in the carp Cyprinus carpio) by HOFER (1904), ROTH (1922) and PLEHN (1924); kyphoscoliosis in the toothcarps by ROTH (1922); kypholordosis in the highly arched Aischgründer race of the carp by SPICZAKOW (1935) and in the carp by SCHäPERCLAUS (1941, 1954); plecospondylic spinal column in the eel (Anguilla anguilla) by SCHäPERCLAUS (1941, 1954) and in the guppy or millionfish (Lebistes reticulatus) by STOLK (1955 a). SCHRäDER (1930) described... |

Description of an ulcerated epidermoid carcinoma of the lower lip in an adult male of the Cichlid Hemichromis bimaculatus Gill. Histologically the tumour was composed of masses and strands of pleomorphic, columnar or polyhedral tumour cells, partly arranged in papillary pegs, which were supported by a vascular connective tissue stroma. The chromatin network of the nuclei was densely structured. The tumour tissue showed an invasive growth and had locally pierced the basement membrane. Emboli of tumour cells and metastases were lacking. |

A description is given of the activity of the thyroid and of the pituitary gland during the development of the gonopodium in the viviparous Cyprinodonts Lebistes reticulatus (Peters), Xiphophorus helleri (Heckel) and Xiphophorus maculatus (Günther). During this process the thyroid gland and the glandular lobe (lobus anterior and lobus intermedius) show a gradual increase in activity. This activity was in general most pronounced in Lebistes reticulatus (Peters) and weakest in Xiphophorus maculatus (Günther). This increase in activity suggests that the developement of the gonopodium is probably regulated endocrinally. For the determination of the state of thyroid and pituitary activity use was made of the quotients d/n and D/n (Lever, 1948 and 1950; cf.... |

In an adult female of the common eel Anguilla anguilla a large lipoma was found, situated on the left side, caudally of the left operculum. Microscopically, the tumour, which originated from the subcutaneous connective tissue, was composed of areas of adipose tissue and areas of fibrous connective tissue. The tumour belongs to the fibrolipomatous type and shows a striking resemblance with the lipoma, described by Stolk (in press) in the lizard Lacerta muralis. |

Description of a case of plecospondylic spinal column in the viviparous Cyprinodont Lebistes reticulatus (PETERS), the so-called guppy or millionfish. In this deformity the following phenomena have been observed: displacement of vertebrae, transformation of vertebrae, increase in size of vertebrae, decrease in size of vertebrae, coalescence of vertebrae, disappearance of vertebrae. Inflammatory cells such as lymphocytes, polynuclear granulocytes and cells with club-shaped inclusions (DUTHIE, 1939; STOLK, 1950 a, 1954 a, 1954 b, 1954 c; CATTON, 1951; ARONOWITZ, NIGRELLI and GORDON, 1951) were not found. Consequently inflammatory processes have not played an important part in the origin of this spinal column deformity. The skeleton of the head and the... |

The Middelkerke Bank, a tidal sandbank located in the southern North Sea on the Belgian continental platform has been the object of a multidisciplinary and international research project. The morphological and hydrodynamical setting of the study area is presented. A complete side-scan sonar coverage of the bank allowed a detailed analysis of the morphology of the bank and of its superimposed bedforms. Large dunes cover the flanks and summit of the Middelkerke Bank. They have a constant orientation, a height ranging from 0.5 to 5 m, a wavelength from 75 to 150 m and in most cases an asymmetrical profile. The slopes of both lee and stoss flanks are very low. Small and medium dune fields occur on the entire bank and in the adjacent swales. They are 2-D and... |
