A TEST OF CONTINGENT MARKET BID ELICITATION PROCEDURES FOR PIECEWISE VALUATION AgEcon
Bergstrom, John C.; Stoll, John R..
Economists are frequently faced with the task of valuing commodity package components. The valuation of specific impacts of public policies is a case in point. Two contingent market bid elicitation procedures were tested for valuing changes in single components of multicomponent government program. Results of the test suggested that respondents provided more accurate component to piecewise valuation when a two-step bidding approach, rather than a one-step approach was used. Thus, there is evidence that a two-step approach which helps respondents to isolate valuations for package components is perhaps a preferable bid elicitation procedure for piecewise valuation.

IMPACT OF A MORE INTENSIVE INSECT PEST INFESTATION LEVEL ON COTTON PRODUCTION: TEXAS HIGH PLAINS AgEcon
Masud, Sharif M.; Lacewell, Ronald D.; Stoll, John R.; Walker, J. Knox; Leser, James F.; Sellar, Christine.
This study evaluated implications of increased bollworm problems in a 20-county area of the Texas High Plains relative to cotton yields and economic impact. Results did not indicate a serious effect of bollworms upon lint yield when insecticides were used for control. However, estimated annual reduction in farmer profit due to the bollworm for 1979-81 was over $30 million. Yields were estimated to decline about 300,000 bales without insecticide use and about 30,000 bales with insecticide use. This decline suggests potentially serious implications for the comparative economic position of cotton in this region if insecticide resistance were to develop among insect pests.

THE MARKET VALUE OF INGRESS RIGHTS FOR WHITE-TAILED DEER HUNTING IN TEXAS AgEcon
Pope, C. Arden, III; Stoll, John R..
The lease hunting system in Texas is described and discussed. Results of a hunter survey are reported and the value of ingress rights for white-tailed deer hunting in Texas is estimated. Results suggest that these rights are highly valuable and that services and facilities provided generally do not enhance the value of the hunting experience as much as access to additional game species on adequately large parcels of land.

PUBLIC ENVIRONMENTAL AMENITY BENEFITS OF PRIVATE LAND: THE CASE OF PRIME AGRICULTURAL LAND AgEcon
Bergstrom, John C.; Dillman, B.L.; Stoll, John R..
Failure of land markets to account for environmental amenity benefits may lend support to public policies to protect agricultural land. The contingent valuation method is employed to estimate willingness to pay for such amenities in Greenville County, South Carolina. Marginal household amenity benefits were estimated at $.06 per thousand acres using a payment card in a mail survey with 53 percent response. Bid payment vehicle was found not to significantly influence bids received. The informational structure of the contingent market was found to influence valuation responses, reinforcing the hypothesis that respondents react to alternative contingent market structures. The relationship between contingent market structure and directional effects upon...

APPLICATION OF EXPERIMENTATAL ECONOMICS CONCEPTS AND PRECEPTS TO CVM FIELD SURVEY PROCEDURES AgEcon
Bergstrom, John C.; Stoll, John R..
Experimental economics (EE) axioms are directly applied in this paper to contingent valuation method (CVM) field survey procedures. The implications of EE concepts and precepts for conceptualizing and handling potential CVM biases and framing effects also are discussed. It is concluded that EE concepts and precepts provide useful principles and guidelines for CVM field survey procedures.
