Climate impact of organic production in the Netherlands Organic Eprints

All agricultural activities have an impact in terms of greenhouse gases and energy use, and organic agriculture is no exception. The Dutch organic sector strives to use sustainable energy and keep its climate impact as low as possible. To facilitate organic farmers, Wageningen UR and Louis Bolk Institute carry out a variety of research aimed specifically at energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. The report contains sector facts, sector aspirations, current affairs and research projects.

Dutch soil management and soil fertility Organic Eprints

The organic sector depends heavily on its soils. In the Netherlands, relatively little acreage is available per farm compared to other countries. This means that the soil has to be kept in optimal shape for production, be it vegetables, cereals, potatoes or animal feed and grassland. To facilitate organic farmers, Wageningen UR and Louis Bolk Institute carry out a variety of research aimed specifically at soil management and soil fertility. Sampling and analysis or visual examination of soil to assess its status and use potential is widely practiced from plot to national scales. However, the choice of relevant soil attributes and interpretation of measurements are not straightforward, because of the complexity and site-specificity of soils, legacy effects of previous land use, and trade-offs between ecosystem services. Here we review soil quality and related concepts, in terms of definition, assessment approaches, and indicator selection and interpretation. Carbon sequestration in organic and conventional managed soils in the Netherlands Organic Eprints

Next to other important agronomic and ecological aspects, the organic matter sequestration in the soil plays an important role in the CO2 balance. Based on detailed farm registrations, the input of effective organic matter and the changes in carbon sequestration in the soil was calculated for a large number of organic and conventional farms in the Netherlands. Results show that both organic and conventional management resulted in a decrease of the pool of organic carbon in the soil. The average decrease for the conventional management was 401 kg ha-1 year-1 and for the organic management 261 kg ha-1 year-1. Reduced tillage is increasingly promoted to improve sustainability and productivity of agricultural systems. Nonetheless, adoption of reduced tillage by organic farmers has been slow due to concerns about nutrient supply, soil structure, and weeds that may limit yields. Here, we compiled the results from both published and unpublished research comparing deep or shallow inversion tillage, with various categories of reduced tillage under organic management. One of the objectives of the TILMAN-ORG Project is to improve weed management under conservation agriculture (reduced tillage and/or cover crops) in organic arable systems. The shift from ploughing to conservation agriculture should not only maintain crop yield but possibly improve weed community diversity. This paper summarises the results on (1) weed abundance, (2) weed diversity and (3) crop yield obtained in the first year of the project (2012) in 13 trials scattered across Europe.

Fosfor bevindt zich in anorganische en organische vorm in de bodem. Beide lijken van belang voor plantenvoeding, maar over de verhouding waarin deze bronnen een rol spelen voor akkerbouw op kalkhoudende klei en zavelgronden is nog onvoldoende bekend. De huidige bodemanalyses worden verbeterd, maar er wordt vooral anorganisch fosfaat geanalyseerd. Planten hebben veel mechanismen om fosfaat op te nemen, maar het speelt zich allemaal heel dicht bij de wortel af en de meeste potentieel beschikbare fosfaat is daarom toch niet effectief beschikbaar.
