Rieger, M. A.; Sundrum, A.; Jungbluth, T.; Hartung, E.; Lohmeyer, M..

Effects of a feeding strategy to increase intramuscular fat content of pork under the conditions of organic farming Organic Eprints
Abel, S.; Weissensteiner, R.; Marien, C.; Zollitsch, W.; Sundrum, A..
In an ongoing study, the effect of the implementation of a specific feeding strategy using a high portion of home-grown grain legumes on the intramuscular fat (IMF) content of pork, is assessed under different conditions on organic farms in Germany and Austria. Preliminary results indicate that variation in the IMF content seems to be higher between farms than between treatments within each farm.

Airborne biological hazards in different pig fattening systems Organic Eprints
Diefenbach, H.; Hartung, E.; Sundrum, A.; Lohmeyer, M.; Rieger, M.A..
In this research project two organic and two conventional housing systems for fattening pigs are assessed in regard to the emission of microorganisms, endotoxins and dust. The concentrations of microorganisms and endotoxins varied between the different housing systems while no distinct differences for the dust concentrations were observed. Endotoxins concentrations reached up to 14 495 EU/m³ (median) in deep litter stable, indicating the high exposure with biological agents during farm work. The differences between the stables could not be assigned to the organic or conventional kind of husbandry but to the management of the systems. Copyright © by BIOLIFE, s.a.s.

Airborne biological hazards and dust in fattening pig facilities with and without straw Organic Eprints
Hartung, E.; Ollesch, K.; Häussermann, A.; Rieger, M.A.; Diefenbach, H.; Sundrum, A.; Ebke, M.; Lohmeyer, M..
Against the background of a high prevalence of respiratory diseases among the workers with the housing of fattening pigs as well as conspicuous negative pulmonary results among the fattening pigs it will be necessary to determine within the framework of an interdisciplinary cooperating project the impact of and hazards for humans, animals and the environment wherever it occurred in fattening pig facilities. To achieve this research has been carried out in representative systems of housing fattening pigs especially taking into account organic systems with the use of straw in deep litter or minimal litter systems in comparison to conventional systems, where the straw was used as on occupation material. In correspondence with the current discussion in the...

Development of strategies to improve quality and safety and reduce cost of production in organic and “low input” livestock production systems Organic Eprints
Spoolder, H.A.M.; Maurer, V.; Sundrum, A..
The demand for organic livestock products is still increasing. To support this growth and to help remove potential obstacles the fourth Subproject of QLIF addresses several themes related to livestock farming. In this overview paper the main results to date are presented. It briefly discusses progress made on preventative treatments against pig and poultry parasites, as well as the reduction of rodent burdens on farm. The activities on probiotics and nutribiotics experiments are listed, as are studies undertaken to improve the meat quality of pigs through different protein sources and diet composition. Finally, work is being presented aiming to reduce the incidence of mastitis, and the reduction of faecal shedding of pathogens in cattle. The overview...

Possibilities and limitations of protein supply in organic poultry and pig production Organic Eprints
Sundrum, A.; Schneider, K.; Richter, U..
It is one of the general recommendations in animal nutrition that the diet should be formulated according to the specific requirements of animals at the various stages of their development. To which degree the farmer can adapt the nutrient supply to the specific requirements of the animals depends primarily on the production goal and on the availability of nutrient resources. This report gives a general introduction to the present situation for dietary protein supply to poultry and pig production in relation to the principles for organic agriculture and husbandry production. Furthermore it includes partly literature based on research from conventional animal production, as the requirements on the level of the animals are not different in both systems....

Evaluation criteria for including feed materials in Annex II C and dietary supplements in Annex II D of the EC-Regulation 2092/91 Organic Eprints
Sundrum, A.; Padel, S..
Organic livestock farming is intended to contribute to the equilibrium of agricultural production systems; establish and maintaining an interdependence between soils, plants and animals; is land-related ruling out landless productions, and should support the development of a sustainable agriculture. The criteria for the evaluation of non-organic and organic feed inputs should be consistent with these principles of organic livestock production. This report provides an overview of issues to be considered with regard to the inclusion of criteria for non-organic and external feed materials in the further development of the EC-Regulation 2092/91 on organic food. The various implications of a criteria based approach are discussed in relation to the main...

Assessing, and understanding, European organic dairy farmers’intentions to improve herd health Organic Eprints
Jones, P. J.; Sok, J.; Tranter, R. B.; Blanco-Penedo, I.; Fall, N.; Fourichon, Christine; Hogeveen, H.; Krieger, M. C.; Sundrum, A..
Many believe the health status of organic dairy herds in Europe should be improved to meet consumers’ and legislators’ expectations to improve animal welfare. This paper reports on a study in four countries that examined dairy farmers’ intentions towards improving the health status of their organic herds through the use of the Theory of Planned Behaviour. It was found that farmers across the countries were positive about taking additional preventative measures to improve the health status of their herds. They believed this would not only improve herd physical performance, such as milk yield and fertility, but also achieve greater cost effectiveness and improved job satisfaction for them. Most study farmers would implement a tailored package of improvement...

Rieger, Monika A.; Sundrum, A.; Jungbluth, T.; Hartung, E..

Hartung, E.; Ollesch, K.; Häußermann, A.; Rieger, M.A.; Diefenbach, H.; Sundrum, A.; Ebke, M.; Lohmeyer, M..
