UNDERGRADUATE PERCEPTIONS OF THE NEED FOR AN AGRICULTURAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP CURRIUCULUM AgEcon
Parcell, Joseph L.; Sykuta, Michael E..
Interest in agri-entrepreneurship is increasingly rapidly. While rural communities believe economic growth can come for entrepreneurship, little is being done within colleges of agriculture to prepare students to become entrepreneurs. We report the results of an undergraduate student survey of University of Missouri College of Agriculture students. We find that students are interested in this topic, and we find students lack knowledge in several key areas typically needed to develop an entrepreneurship mentality.

Agricultural Organization in an Era of Traceability AgEcon
Sykuta, Michael E..
From production to retail, information systems have become increasingly important in the agrifood system. Retailers use information systems to improve inventory management and increase efficiency in production and logistics. Innovations in agribiotechnology and food safety issues highlighted by incidences related to Starlink corn and “mad cow disease” have raised consumer concerns about their food products. In addition to food safety concerns, consumers are increasingly willing to pay premiums for nonobservable quality characteristics in their food products. This paper outlines a framework for evaluating the implications of traceability for the organization of the agricultural system and highlights potential organizational responses to traceability...

Unilateral vs. Bilateral Incentives: Evidence from the U.S. Pork Industry AgEcon
Jang, Jongick; Miller, Douglas J.; Sykuta, Michael E.; Won, Seoung Joun.
The idea that individuals adapt their behaviors in response to changes in incentive systems is fundamental to most economic analysis. This paper incorporates the concept of price discovery costs into the incentive theory to offer a theoretical model and empirical evidence on the differential incentive effects of long-term contracts and spot markets. Using the US pork industry case where procuring intertemporally consistent weights of hogs have been critical to pork processors, we show why the effectiveness of unilaterally determined and posted incentive price for the hog quality by the pork packers on the intertemporal consistency erodes and why a bilateral incentive structure built through long-term hog procurement contracts is demanded, in the presence...

Market Integration: Case Studies of Structural Change AgEcon
Franken, Jason R.V.; Parcell, Joseph L.; Sykuta, Michael E.; Fulcher, Christopher L..
The grain/oilseed industry is undergoing considerable structural change through mergers and new value-added businesses, which raises price-related questions. We analyze the level of price integration prior to and following a merger between two grain firms and the start-up of a producer-owned ethanol facility. This research utilizes error correction vector autoregression analysis to compute market integration structural change effects. We find evidence that market integration initially increases with the merger, but deteriorates with time following the merger. We find no significant localized change in the level of price integration for the case of a new value-added business.

POLITICS, ECONOMICS AND THE REGULATION OF DIRECT INTERSTATE SHIPPING IN THE WINE INDUSTRY AgEcon
Riekhof, Gina; Sykuta, Michael E..
In 1986, the State of California passed legislation restricting the direct importation of wine from another state by California residents unless the originating state allowed the reciprocal privilege of direct shipment from California wineries to residents in that state. This proved to be the opening salvo in a series of legislative and judicial battles across the country. State direct shipment regulations that were uniform across 47 of the 50 states prior to 1986 now constitute a patchwork of regulations. This raises unique interstate trade questions due to the special treatment of alcohol in the U.S. Constitution. While the Commerce Clause forbids states from discriminating against interstate commerce, the 21st Amendment affords states the right to...

Contracting for Consistency: Hog Quality and the Use of Marketing Contracts AgEcon
Jang, Jongick; Sykuta, Michael E..
Achieving consistency in hog quality has been one of the greatest challenges in the US pork industry. Packers, processors and retailers all ranked lack of uniformity in live hogs, carcasses, and retail cuts with regard to size and backfat as the most important quality issue facing the industry in the mid 1990s (NPPC, Pork Quality Audit, 1994), and quality consistency continues to be a leading industry concern (Martinez and Zering, 2004). The past 15 years have also witnessed dramatic changes in the organization of the US hog industry. In 1993, over 82% of hogs were sold through spot markets while 11% were sold under marketing contracts. By 2005, only 11% of hogs were sold through spot markets, with 67% sold under marketing contracts and over 20% owned...

Markets, Contracts, or Integration? The Adoption, Diffusion, and Evolution of Organizational Form AgEcon
Sykuta, Michael E.; Klein, Peter G.; James, Harvey S., Jr..
The rise of contract farming and vertical integration is one of the most important changes in modern agriculture. Yet the adoption and diffusion of these new forms of organization has varied widely across regions, commodities, or farm types, however. Transaction cost theories and the like are not fully effective at explaining the variation of adoption rates of different organizational forms, in part because of their inherent static nature. In order to explain the adoption, diffusion and evolution of organizational form, a more dynamic framework is required. This paper lays out such a framework for understanding the evolution of organizational practices in U.S. agriculture by drawing on existing theories of economic organization, the diffusion of...

FARMER TRUST IN AGRICULTURAL COOPERATIVES: EVIDENCE FROM MISSOURI CORN AND SOYBEAN PRODUCERS AgEcon
James, Harvey S., Jr.; Sykuta, Michael E..
We examine whether cooperatives are characterized by greater trust than investor-owned firms. We survey 2000 Missouri corn and soybean farmers and find that trust and farmer perceptions of trustworthiness and competence are higher in cooperatives than in investor-owned firms and that trust is a significant factor explaining the choice of farmers to market to cooperatives rather than investor-owned firms. Interestingly, we find that trust is more significant in producers’' decisions for marketing soybeans than for corn.
