Novel organic fungicides and elicitors against downy mildew on grapevines were evaluated on grapevine seedlings in a series of indoor screening experiments under controlled conditions and, if they have shown a good efficacy indoors, in a screening vineyard under field conditions. From 39 products tested under controlled conditions 10 were further examined under field conditions. All of the new products tested under field conditions showed at least partial efficacy. However, the efficacy was not good enough to protect grapevine plants sufficiently from downy mildew. For a complete re-placement of copper in plant protection against downy mildew on grapevine in organic agriculture, additional new products are needed. |

Semiochemicals are substances that evoke behavioural or physiological responses. Pheromones modify the behaviour of other individuals of the same species, while allelochemicals act on individuals of different species. Pheromones are used in plant protection (i) to interfere with the mating behaviour of pests ('mating disruption'), (ii) to attract pests to insecticidal traps or baits ('attract and kill'), (iii) to trap pests ('mass trapping'), and (iv) to monitor pest populations. Semiochemicals present a particular case among active ingredients used in plant production products, as they are only substances not intended to kill the pest organism directly. The current regulatory system of pesticides is often seen as a major hurdle for the market introduction... |

Denn Gentech-food ist out, in ganz Europa.

Fertile soils are highly important for arable farming. To maintain soil fertility, crop rotation including legumes is applied, particularly in stockless farms. Yet, many commercial farms report yield reductions for legumes. The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether the causes for the observed soil fatigue can be narrowed down by a bioassay (modified differential diagnosis according to Bouhot) and whether this bioassay could be a useful tool to predict the suitability of a field to grow legumes. |

A novel formulation of potassium bicarbonate (Armicarb) was evaluated in 2004 and 2005 as agent against apple scab (3 field trials) and sooty blotch (2 field trials). Armicarb controlled scab equally well as the reference treatments sulphur and copper. Armicarb showed also excellent activity against sooty blotch. However, potential side-effects such as lenticell spot development need further investigation. At present, potassium bicarbonate is considered by the Swiss registration authorities as non-toxic to humans and in consequence, no residue levels have been specified. Armicarb has very interesting properties as a plant protection agent and its composition and risk profile are expected to fulfil the IFOAM standards for acceptance of novel plant... |

The project CO-FREE (2012-2016) aimed to develop strategies to replace/reduce copper use in organic, integrated and conventional farming. CO-FREE alternative test products (CTPs) were tested and integrated together with decision support systems, disease-tolerant varieties, and innovative breeding goals (ideotypes) into improved management strategies. CO-FREE focused on apple/apple scab (Venturia inaequalis), grape/downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola), and tomato and potato/late blight (Phytophthora infestans). Starting point of the project were ten CTPs with direct or indirect modes of action including Trichoderma atroviride SC1 and protein extract SCNB, Lysobacter spp., yeast-based derivatives, Cladosporium cladosporioides H39, the oligosaccharidic complex... |
