EXPLORING MEAT AND POULTRY RECALL DATA FOR POLICY LESSONS AgEcon
Teratanavat, Ratapol P.; Hooker, Neal H.; Salin, Victoria.
Four measures are introduced to evaluate the likelihood of meat and poultry recalls and how firms and FSIS manage such events. These measures include the proportion of product retrieved (recovery rate), time to complete a case, the ratio of recovery rate and completion, and the hazard rate. This research aims to advance our knowledge and understanding of food safety programs by presenting statistical indicators which benchmark the food system. The results from OLS, Negative Binomial, and Cox regression models suggest that limited conclusions can be reached in terms of overall performance and factors that explain the timeliness of recalls. Evidence suggests that smaller plants perform as well as large plants in their recall actions. Also, when the firm...

EXAMINING FOOD CONSUMPTION IN JAPAN UNDER LIFE-CYCLE HYPOTHESIS: IMPLICATION FROM CROSS-SECTIONAL DATA AgEcon
Bittencourt, Maurício Vaz Lobo; Teratanavat, Ratapol P.; Chern, Wen S..
This study estimates a cross-sectional model through a theoretically consistent Almost Ideal Demand System (AIDS) to examine the economic and demographic determinants of food consumption patterns in Japan over life-cycle periods. Results show key factors that explain such behavior, including family size, number of children, lifestyle and health concern.

Exploring Consumer Valuation and Preference Heterogeneity for Functional Foods Using a Choice Experiment: A Case Study of Tomato Juice Containing Soy in Ohio AgEcon
Teratanavat, Ratapol P.; Hooker, Neal H..
A discrete choice experiment is applied to examine consumer valuation of a new generation of functional foods. Data were collected from 1,704 households in Ohio through a mail survey. Results indicate health benefits and ingredient naturalness are positively valued but such preferences depend on individual's education, income, and food purchase behavior.

CONSUMER UNDERSTANDING AND USE OF HEALTH INFORMATION ON PRODUCT LABELS: MARKETING IMPLICATIONS FOR FUNCTIONAL FOOD AgEcon
Teratanavat, Ratapol P.; Hooker, Neal H.; Haugtvedt, Curtis P.; Rucker, Derek D..
In recent years, the numbers of functional foods being developed and subjected to scientific evaluation have increased substantially. The main characteristic of functional foods that distinguishes them from conventional foods is the potential health benefit, which can be considered to be a credence attribute of product quality. Because this characteristic cannot be easily assessed even after consumption, an asymmetric information environment for health benefits has emerged where producers have more information than consumers. Thus the government intervenes by regulating the provision of health information on product labels in order to avoid potential market failures. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently amended the way health claims on labels of...
