The genus Sesarma, established in 1817 by Say to receive an American form has turned out to contain such a large number of species, that it is nowadays one of the most difficult ones to the systematist. No less than about 130 species without the subspecies are included in it. In dealing with so many forms the need of subdivision naturally presents itself, and so de Man in 1887 (Zool. Jahrb. Syst., Bd. 2) firstly distinguished four subgenera, to which in 1895 (Zool. Jahrb. Syst., Bd. 9) he gave the names of Sesarma s.s., Episesarma, Parasesarma and Perisesarma. But already two years afterwards the often tyrannic exigencies of priority in nomenclature induced Miss Rathbun (Proc. Biol. Soc. Washington, v. 11) to alter the first two names into Holometopus and... |

Having recently 1) tried to bring some order into the great confusion, existing in the systematic literature on the Heteropods, and to eliminate some of the difficulties, which the investigator of this group of animals is sure to encounter with, I have been convinced, more than anybody else, that my study could have nothing but a provisional value, and that a firmer base could only be obtained by means of continued labour, and comparison of more material. For a systematic revision I have chosen the family Atlantidae. These animals with their tiny, inconspicuous shells, have received but little attention, and after Souleyet’s memorable work, more than half a century ago, only very few naturalists have dealt with the group. Among them I may name Gould,... |

1. Talorchestia brito Stebbing. In examining a lot of Orchestia gammarellus (Pallas) (= O. littorea (Montagu)) collected many years ago at Katwijk by Dr. J. A. Herklots, late conservator of Invertebrates at the Leiden Museum, I came across some fine specimens of Talorchestia brito Stebbing, which have evidently been picked up together with the common Orchestiae. The sample was undated, but as Dr. Herklots died in 1872, the specimens must have been caught on our sea-shore long before Stebbing described his new species, in October 1891 (Ann. Mag. Nat. Hist., ser. 6 v. VIII p. 324—328, pl. XV), obtained plentifully in the summer of this year „on Woolacombe and Saunton Sands, in North Devon". Afterwards Chevreux found it, likewise in abundance, on the shore of... |

The material of Pteropoda in the collection of the Leydeu Museum is rather poor and consists only of a few species, one of which, however, is new to science, while others are rarely met with. So I think it to be not wholly destitute of importance to enumerate the different forms, as it gives rise to some remarks on morphology as well as on distribution, which will follow after the systematic part. A large deal of the collection was supplied during the last few years by Mr. P. J. Buitendijk, physician at the Royal Steam-Shipping Company » Nederland”, to whom the Museum is indebted for his zealous collecting zoologica, on his periodical travels to the East- and West-Indies and viceversa. As circumstances, however, allowed him to ellect occasional hauls at... |

Though not laying any claim to being considered a pioneer in this systematic treatise on the genus Macrophthalmus, a thorough account of which has been given by Ortmann in 1897, I hope a renewed investigation may be not unwelcome to carcinologists. The discrimination of the species of this genus, notwithstanding they are easily to be grouped around certain well-characterized forms, remains a troublesome task. As far as I know Ortmann (Zool. Jahrb. Abt. Syst., Bnd. 10, 1897, p. 340—342) was the first to give an analytical key of the species then known. Several authors, among whom we may name Miss Rathbun, Nobili, Stimpson and Laurie, have since described new species or cleared several yet undecided questions about imperfectly known forms, but it is... |

The genus Pyxidognathus was established by A. Milne-Edwards (Bull. Soc. Philom. Paris, ser. 7, t. 3, 1878, p. 109) on a species, named by him P. granulosus, that was found in fresh or slightly brackish water in the island of Ovalau. A few months afterwards, in April 1879, de Man described a specimen under the name Hypsilograpsus deldeni nov. gen. nov. spec. (Notes Leyden Mus., v. 1, p. 72), collected by van Delden in 1836 near Manado (Celebes); this specimen, however, was recognized by de Man himself (Notes Leyden Mus., v. 5,1883, p. 159) as being probably identical with the species of Milne-Edwards, having had the opportunity of examining an original drawing of the animal, prepared by the French author. Dr. de Man has, on my request, kindly sent me this... |
