Comparison of the aerobic metabolism for four strains of Artemia OMA
Bernaerts, F.; Blust, R.; Van der Linden, A.; Thoeye, C..
The respiratory physiology in 35 pro mille artificial seawater has been studied for four strains of adult Artemia . The scope of activity and the potential activity range were studied by measuring the respiratory rate of actively swimming and anaesthetized animals and the respiration of total homogenates. The experiments were carried out at temperatures ranging from 5 to 45°C. The lower lethal value for male and female Artemia from the four strains (Great Salt Lake, Macau and Sfax) being 5°C. The higher lethal value for male Artemia from Great Salt Lake, Macau and Sfax being 45°C, while male animals from San Francisco Bay only survive up to 35°C. Female Artemia from the four...

An action spectrum for light-induced hatching of Artemia cysts OMA
Van der Linden, A.; Blust, R.; Cuypers, K.; Thoeye, C.; Bernaerts, F..
The influence of light on the hatching induction of Artemia cysts is well known. Our objective was to determine the absorption characteristics of the responsible photoreceptor by action spectroscopy. The results suggest the involvement of a haemopigment located in the gastrula. Haematin, the haemopigment of the cyst shell is demonstrated to have a light-screening function towards the photoreceptor.

The effect of diurnal temperature cycles on survival of Artemia from different geographical origin OMA
Thoeye, C.; Van der Linden, A.; Bernaerts, F.; Blust, R.; Decleir, W..
The temperature in a natural Artemia habitat usually shows diurnal cyclic variations. It is important for inoculation and culturing purposes to know the survival under such conditions. The survival of four Artemia strains, Great Salt Lake and San Francisco Bay (USA), and Sfax and Mégrine (Tunisia) was studied over a period of 7 days, in different conditions of constant or diurnal fluctuating temperatures at two salinities. For the Great Salt Lake strain, the temperature fluctuation had no effect on the survival, as compared to constant temperature regimes (at 35 pro mille). For the other strains, temperature fluctuations had either no influence, or a beneficial influence on survival. In general, the tolerance of...

The influence of aqueous copper chemistry on the uptake and toxicity of copper in Artemia OMA
Blust, R.; Bernaerts, F.; Van der Linden, A.; Thoeye, C..
The effect of organic complexation, salinity, and pH on the uptake and toxicity of copper in Artemia was studied. The results were compared with data on the chemical speciation and lipid solubility of copper in saline solutions. The uptake experiments took 90 min and the toxicity tests 24h. A computer model was used to calculate the saline solution equilibrium speciation. The lipid solubility of copper was determined in a series of saline/olive oil partition tests.Complexation of copper by EDTA reduced the uptake and toxicity of copper. Salinity had no apparent effect on both processes. The results of these uptake and toxicity experiments agreed well with the copper speciation and lipid solubility data. The effect of pH on the uptake and...
