Hatching of eggs of <i>Anguillicola crassus</i> was studied at temperatures between 5 and 30°C. Hatching occurred between 10 and 30°C and the incubation time was inversely related to temperature. Survival, spontaneous and excitatory rate of activity of 2nd-stage larvae of <i>A. crassus</i> were also affected by temperature. The percentage of larvae eaten by <i>Paracyclops fimbriatus</i> was not always influenced by the activity of the larvae. Penetration efficiency into the haemocoel of the intermediate host was highest for freshly hatched larvae and declined gradually with age. Completely non-active larvae were still able to penetrate, although penetration efficiency was lower. |

We present evidence that incubation of brine shrimp <i>Artemia</i> encysted embryos (cysts) at high temperatures (36-37°C) suppresses hatching of cysts from a parthenogenetic population, while at the same time allowing cysts of the New World bisexual species (<i>A. fransiscana</i>) to hatch. This approach is used to verify the presence of contaminating foreign material from the New World in natural cyst populations of Old World <i>A. parthenogenetica, A. sinica, A. urmiana</i> and <i>A. tunisiana</i>. A scanning electron microscopy (SEM) study of bisexual <i>Artemia</i> populations revealed that populations representing the species <i>A. franciscana, A. persimilis, A. urmiana, A. sinica</i> and a recently described species from Kazakhstan have a pair of spine-like outgrowths at the basal parts of their penes, whereas populations from Southern Europe and North Africa (i.e. Mediterranean populations) lack these spine-like outgrowths.
