2002 MICHIGAN TREE FRUIT BUSINESS ANALYSIS SUMMARY AgEcon
Thornsbury, Suzanne; Harsh, Stephen B.; Wittenberg, Eric.
This report summarizes the financial and production records of 18 Michigan tree fruit farms. To be included, the farms must have produced at least 50 percent of gross cash farm income from one or a combination of sales from cherries, apples, and other fruits. The records came from Michigan State University's TelFarm/MicroTel project, the Farm Credit Service system, or by AgriSolutions in Michigan. The values were pooled into averages for reporting purposes. Farm records were included if a farm financial summary was completed on 2002 data including beginning and ending balance sheets, plus income and expenses. The data was checked to verify that cash and debt discrepancy were within an acceptable range. While considerable variation in the data exists,...

POLITICAL ECONOMY DETERMINANTS OF TECHNICAL BARRIERS TO U.S. AGRICULTURAL EXPORTS AgEcon
Thornsbury, Suzanne.
Political economy determinants of questionable technical barriers applied to U.S. agricultural exports are evaluated using PROBIT and Poisson regression techniques. Results indicate the incidence of such barriers can increase when domestic agriculture is large relative to consumption, when producers are less competitive in international markets, and when the anticipated future level of protection through other forms of government intervention decreases.

CONSOLIDATION IN THE FRESH FLORIDA GRAPEFRUIT PACKING INDUSTRY AgEcon
Davis, Kathy J.; Thornsbury, Suzanne; Ward, Ronald W..
First-order, homogeneous, stationary Markov models are used to compare patterns of adjustment among Florida fresh grapefruit packers between the 1970/71-1983/84 and 1987/88-1999/00 periods, and 1970/71-1994/95 and 1995/95-1999/00 periods, respectively. Despite sweeping aggregate trends impacting fresh produce markets, there was insufficient evidence to identify significant differences in the patterns of adjustment in the packing sector during the later time periods. Comparisons with actual firm numbers are indicative of an industry near equilibrium. While individual firms enter and exit the different states, currently there are no profound structural changes pointing to major concentration.

Regional Wholesale Price Relationships in the Presence of Counter-Seasonal Imports AgEcon
Raper, Kellie Curry; Thornsbury, Suzanne; Aguilar, Cristobal.
Counter-seasonal imports of fresh produce facilitate year-round availability in the U.S. and may impact the seasonal structure of market price relationships. Vector autoregression analysis is used to determine the nature and extent of spatial price relationships among four geographically distinct regions in the U.S. fresh peach wholesale market. We evaluate differences in regional spatial price relationships and find statistical evidence that price relationships among regions are different in periods dominated by regional domestic supplies imports compared with periods when counter-seasonal imports dominate the market.

Measurement and Political Economy of Disputed Technical Regulations AgEcon
Thornsbury, Suzanne; Roberts, Donna; Orden, David.
Technical regulations are increasingly visible in agricultural trade, yet their idiosyncratic nature has limited prior aggregate analysis. This article draws on a unique data source for systematic enumeration of the technical regulations questioned by one exporter among all of its trading partners in mid-1996. Political economy analysis indicates that barriers decrease when the relative contribution of agriculture to an economy increases, when the anticipated future level of protection through other forms of government intervention increases, and when economies are more open. Despite increased scrutiny and discipline by the World Trade Organization, technical barriers remain a significant impediment in world agricultural markets.

Economic Evaluation of SPS Regulations: Where Can Progress be Made? AgEcon
Romano, Eduardo; Thornsbury, Suzanne.
The purpose of this paper is to report on the current state of economic evaluations for sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) regulations affecting food and agricultural trade. The paper reviews current theoretical and econometric advances and limitations in modeling SPS regulations, particularly in dealing with biological and environmental uncertainty. By systematizing limitations of current approaches for evaluation, and comparing them with approaches used in the public health arena, the paper identifies problematic areas, and suggests steps for immediate analytical and policy progress.

Fresh Grapefruit Supply-Chain Adjustments: Consolidation in Produce Packing? AgEcon
Thornsbury, Suzanne; Davis, Kathy J.; Ward, Ronald W..
This study evaluates long-term structural adjustments in fresh grapefruit packing under aggregate market pressures, including those from retail concentration. While individual firms enter and exit, Markov-model results are indicative of an industry near equilibrium with little expectation of change in the distribution of firm sizes given existing patterns of sector adjustment. Estimation of Lorenz curves and corresponding Gini coefficients fully support Markov analysis findings. Lags in the packing sector adjustment process in the face of sweeping forces of change in fresh produce markets are likely to put this sector at a relative disadvantage within the supply chain.

Technological Leapfrogging as a Source of Competitive Advantage AgEcon
Wright, Robert Thomson; Martinez, Lourdes R.; Thornsbury, Suzanne.
This paper examines technological leapfrogging industries characterized by long term investments in perennial crops. Threshold farm size and economic valuation are used to evaluate adoption of harvester innovations. Less than 1 percent of Polish farmers are able to adopt overhead harvesters and sunk costs limit the ability of rapid adjustments in U.S. technology.

Regional Wholesale Price Relationships: The Case of Peaches AgEcon
Aguilar, Cristobal; Raper, Kellie Curry; Thornsbury, Suzanne.
An important characteristic of agricultural commodity markets is the extent to which those markets respond to price changes in related markets. Given a competitive market structure, the Law of One Price (LOP) postulates that spatial price relationships are determined by transfer cost1 among regions and that spatial arbitrage restores market equilibrium (Tomek and Robinson, 2003). Spatial price relationships are of particular relevance to farmers in designing market strategies. Measurements of spatial price relationships provide insights about the dynamics of price movements, thus increasing understanding of likely behavior of supply or demand areas in the market (Jordan and Van Sickle, 1998). For example, knowledge of which regions lead prices, the...

Michigan: A State at the Intersection of the Debate over Full Planting Flexibility AgEcon
Thornsbury, Suzanne; Martinez, Lourdes R.; Schweikhardt, David B..
Greater flexibility in U.S. farm programs with elimination of the restriction on the planting of fruit and vegetable crops (FAVR crops) is likely to be a major issue in congressional 2007 farm policy discussions. Michigan is a state with a wide range of both FAVR and program crops planted under the current policy. To capture the diversity of situations that would apply among of crops covered by the current policy, this research has examined a broad set of Michigan FAVR crops (dry beans, pickling cucumbers, processing tomatoes, fresh market tomatoes, squash, and blueberries). We evaluate both those factors that are likely to prevent the entry of DCP crop producers into the production of FAVR crops (barriers to entry or disincentives) and those factors that...

National and International Factors in Pickle Markets AgEcon
Martinez, Lourdes R.; Thornsbury, Suzanne; Nagai, Tomokazu.
This report presents global and domestic information regarding production, trade and market developments for pickled cucumbers. U.S. cucumber production and trade are commonly divided into two categories: fresh and pickling. Michigan is the largest producer of pickling cucumbers in the country, accounting for 18 percent of total U.S. production. Like many agri-food industries, this processed product sector has gone through numerous changes in the past decade which have influenced production and marketing trends, and assessing the influence of individual factors is difficult. However, using production and trade data it is possible to infer some possible drivers of trends and outcomes for the industry. Year-round supply from other countries, quality...
