MASSILIA: Modélisation de la baie de MArSeILLe : Influence des apports Anthropiques de la métropole sur l’écosystème marin ArchiMer
Pinazo, Christel; Fraysse, Marion; Doglioli, Andrea; Faure, Vincent Martin; Pairaud, Ivane; Petrenko, Anne; Thouvenin, Benedicte; Tronczynski, Jacek; Verney, Romaric; Yohia, Christophe.
In the framework of sustainable development, the anthropogenic impact of large coastal cities on the marine ecosystem is a key issue. This project aimed to improve our knowledge in marine ecosystem response to the anthropogenic supplies (from rivers, sewage outflows and atmosphere) from large cities. In particular, the goal is to underline how the physical forcing decreases or increases the anthropogenic impact on the coastal ecosystem and the assessment of the chemical contaminant (PCB) inputs (from city to sea) and exports (from mid-sea to open sea).

Influence du bouchon vaseux sur les variations des concentrations en oxygène dissous : Cas de l'estuaire de la Loire ArchiMer
Romana, Louis-alexandre; Thouvenin, Benedicte; Galenne, B.; Casanova, C..
The dissolved oxygen is a sensitive parameter for the environment quality. It is subjected to important variations in macrotidal estuaries with significant results on the fauna. It's why we can notice the important mullet death note in the Estuary of the Loire during sommer time. The supply of biodegradable organic substances in the maximum turbidity zone led to an important dissolved oxygen demand. It's the example of the Estuary of the Loire where we can watch this main fonction. A detailed study has begun on the dissolved oxygen cycle to compare the biochemical particulate and dissolved oxygen demand. This study collects in situ parameters, either of the environment evolution or of the dissolved oxygen cycle with specifie researches on the rate of...

Sediment transport in the Bay of Marseille : Role of extrem events. ArchiMer
Verney, Romaric; Jany, Cassandre; Thouvenin, Benedicte; Pairaud, Ivane; Vousdoukas, Michalis I.; Pinazo, Christel; Ardhuin, Fabrice; Cann, Philippe.
Human pressures on ecosystems have increased significantly over the last decades, and especially Mediterranean coasts are strongly impacted by the development of big cities and industrialized area, such as the Bay of Marseille. Prior to any investigations on ecological or contamination impacts, it was necessary to understand sediment dynamics and its response to natural extreme events such as storm or heavy rainfall events. In situ observations were dedicated to understand the behavior of bed sediments, and their spatial distribution. A benthic station was deployed for three months to observe the impact of extreme events on hydrodynamics and sediment dynamics in a critical zone of the study area. These measurementswere used to calibrate and validate the...

Phytoplankton versus macrophyte contribution to primary production and biogeochemical cycles of a coastal mesotidal system. A modelling approach ArchiMer
Plus, Martin; Auby, Isabelle; Maurer, Daniele; Trut, Gilles; Del Amo, Y.; Dumas, Franck; Thouvenin, Benedicte.
This study presents an assessment of the contributions of various primary producers to the global annual production and N/P cycles of a coastal system, namely the Arcachon Bay, by means of a numerical model. This 3D model fully couples hydrodynamic with ecological processes and simulates nitrogen, silicon and phosphorus cycles as well as phytoplankton, macroalgae and seagrasses. Total annual production rates for the different components were calculated for different years (2005, 2007 and 2009) during a time period of drastic reduction in seagrass beds since 2005. The total demand of nitrogen and phosphorus was also calculated and discussed with regards to the riverine inputs. Moreover, this study presents the first estimation of particulate organic carbon...

How to avoid eutrophication in coastal seas? A new approach to derive river-specific combined nitrate and phosphate maximum concentrations ArchiMer
Menesguen, Alain; Desmit, Xavier; Duliere, Valerie; Lacroix, Genevieve; Thouvenin, Benedicte; Thieu, Vincent; Dussauze, Morgan.
Since 1950, increase in nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) river loadings in the North-East Atlantic (NEA) continental seas has induced a deep change in the marine coastal ecosystems, leading to eutrophication symptoms in some areas. In order to recover a Good Ecological Status (GES) in the NEA, as required by European Water Framework Directive (WFD) and Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), reductions in N- and P-river loadings are necessary but they need to be minimal due to their economic impact on the farming industry. In the frame of the “EMoSEM” European project, we used two marine 3D ecological models (ECO-MARS3D, MIRO&CO) covering the Bay of Biscay, the English Channel and the southern North Sea to estimate the contributions of various...

Modélisation des contaminants chimiques dans une colonne d'eau. Modèle MOMO (MORGAN+MOCO). ArchiMer
Thouvenin, Benedicte; Gonzalez, Jean-louis.
Within the framework of the "Contaminants cycle and modeling" project of the BE department ("Biogeochemistry and Ecotoxicology") in Ifremer, two chemical contaminant modeling software were developed between 1998 and 2011 (Gonzalez JL, 2017): the MORGAN model (Model behavior of ORGANic contaminants in an aquatic environment) and the MOCO model (Surface Complexation MOdel for metallic COntaminants). These two models had been brought together in a single "zero-dimensional" software (known as MOMO), which made it possible to simulate the various processes affecting the behavior of chemical contaminants in a homogeneous mass of water (biodegradation, adsorption/desorption, photolysis, hydrolysis, volatilization, surface complexation, cation exchange,...

Modelling Pb and Cd dynamics in the Seine estuary ArchiMer
Thouvenin, Benedicte; Gonzalez, Jean-louis; Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Boutier, Bernard; Le Hir, Pierre.
The Seine estuary (France) is currently one of the world's most contaminated estuaries, due in particular to its high cadmium and lead content. Proper understanding of contaminant transfer, transformation and retention mechanisms throughout the estuary and up to the adjacent marine zone require a range of studies involving data collections, experiments, and modeling tool. A multivariable transport model (SiAM-3D) was used to simulate dissolved and particulate transport and it is applied to several calculation grids; a speciation model (MOCO) was used to select key species and obtain a schematic system representation. The coupled model for Cd and Pb was compared with field measurements. The complementary character of various tools (model applied to annual...

Bacq, Nicolas; Cugier, Philippe; Grasso, Florent; Le Gendre, Romain; Le Hir, Pierre; Lemoine, Jean-philippe; Riou, Philippe; Schulz, Elisabeth; Thouvenin, Benedicte; Verney, Romaric.

Operational modelling of nutrients and phytoplancton in the bay of biscay and english channel ArchiMer
Menesguen, Alain; Dussauze, Morgan; Lecornu, Fabrice; Dumas, Franck; Thouvenin, Benedicte.
Nitrate loadings to the French coastal waters of the Bay of Biscay and the English Channel have increased from 5 to 10 times during the four last decades, due to runoff on intensively fertilized agricultural watersheds. Eutrophication of this coastal zone is now a recurrent problem, with wellknown direct impacts (Ulva “green tides” on beaches, excessive phytoplanktonic blooms responsible for “coloured waters” and bottom hypoxia events offshore), but also indirect enhancement of the toxicity of some phytoplankton species, caused for instance by increased N:Si ratio in the coastal sea. In order to better guide the decision makers about nutrient loading reduction, Ifremer uses the so-called ECO-MARS3D biogeochemicalhydrodynamical model to simulate the present...

Role of particle sorption properties in the behavior and speciation of trace metals in macrotidal estuaries: The cadmium example ArchiMer
Gonzalez, Jean-louis; Thouvenin, Benedicte; Dange, Catherine; Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Boutier, Bernard.
The role of particles in the fate and speciation of trace metals in macrotidal estuaries was studied using a surface complexation model (MOCO). Cadmium was selected as the target metal contaminant due to its reactivity in estuaries: cadmium behavior is mainly controlled by heterogeneous processes (sorption/desorption) related to salinity and suspended matter gradients. Various scenarios of suspended matter distribution according to salinity were simulated. The impact of surface properties (specific surface area, density of surface sites, acido-basic properties, and complexation constant) was evaluated using data collected on particles from the Gironde, Loire, and Seine estuaries. Our results show that particle surface properties, evaluated on the basis...

Modélisation des contaminants en milieu aquatique: Module MET&OR ArchiMer
Thouvenin, Benedicte.
The MET&OR module is a model, written in FORTRAN 90, which calculates the biogeochemical reactions between variables such as trace metal, radioactive tracers, organic or bacterial contaminants (biodegradation, decay, adsorption / desorption, photolysis, hydrolysis, volatilization, partition at equilibrium ..). It groups together classical reactions, described in the literature, to evaluate the source and sink terms which are integrated into the transport equations solved by a hydrodynamic model. It is intended more particularly for marine and coastal waters. This technical documentation aims to present the MET&OR module and the way in which it was coupled to the hydrodynamic model, in particular to MARS-3D.

Suspended Sediment Dynamics in the Macrotidal Seine Estuary (France) - Part 1: Numerical Modeling of Turbidity Maximum Dynamics ArchiMer
Grasso, Florent; Verney, Romaric; Le Hir, Pierre; Thouvenin, Benedicte; Schulz, Elisabeth; Kervella, Youenn; Fard, I. Khojasteh Pour; Lemoine, J. -p.; Dumas, Franck; Garnier, Valerie.
Tidal pumping, baroclinic circulation and vertical mixing are known to be the main mechanisms responsible for the estuarine turbidity maximum (ETM) formation. However, the influence of hydro-meteorological conditions on ETM dynamics is still not properly grasped and requires further investigation to be quantified. Based on a realistic 3-dimensional numerical model of the macrotidal Seine Estuary (France) that accounts for mud and sand transport processes, the objective of this study is to quantify the influence of the main forcing (river flow, tides, waves) on the ETM location and mass changes. As expected, the ETM location is strongly modulated by semidiurnal tidal cycles and fortnightly timescales with a high sensitivity to river flow variations. The ETM...

Modèle tridimensionnel de circulation et de dispersion en zone côtière à marée. Premiers essais : cas schématique et baie de Seine ArchiMer
Thouvenin, Benedicte; Salomon, Jean-claude.
In order to reproduce and investigate the marine circulation in the coastal tidal zone, and especially its three dimensional nature, it appeared interesting to develop a numerical mode! which could take account of the real bottom topography and the variations of the free surface. Navier-Stokes equations are solved in a straight forward manner, generalizing a finite difference technique already used in two-dimensional vertical models. To test the computational program, the mode! was applied to a number of flat bottom schematic basins, where we reproduced wind driven currents and tide propagation. Then we considered the particular case of a real channel and, finally, density currents associated with a salty wall. Mode) results are compared to theoretical...

Suspended Sediment Dynamics in the Macrotidal Seine Estuary (France) - Part 2: Numerical Modeling of Sediment Fluxes and Budgets Under Typical Hydrological and Meteorological Conditions ArchiMer
Schulz, Elisabeth; Grasso, Florent; Le Hir, Pierre; Verney, Romaric; Thouvenin, Benedicte.
Understanding the sediment dynamics in an estuary is important for its morphodynamic and ecological assessment as well as, in case of an anthropogenically controlled system, for its maintenance. However, the quantification of sediment fluxes and budgets is extremely difficult from in-situ data and requires thoroughly validated numerical models. In the study presented here, sediment fluxes and budgets in the lower Seine Estuary were quantified and investigated from seasonal to annual time scales with respect to realistic hydro- and meteorological conditions. A realistic three-dimensional process-based hydro- and sediment-dynamic model was used to quantify mud and sand fluxes through characteristic estuarine cross-sections. In addition to a reference...

Impact of urban effluents on summer hypoxia in the highly turbid Gironde Estuary, applying a 3D model coupling hydrodynamics, sediment transport and biogeochemical processes ArchiMer
Lajaunie-salla, Katixa; Wild-allen, Karen; Sottolichio, Aldo; Thouvenin, Benedicte; Litrico, Xavier; Abril, Gwenael.
Estuaries are increasingly degraded due to coastal urban development and are prone to hypoxia problems. The macro-tidal Gironde Estuary is characterized by a highly concentrated turbidity maximum zone (TMZ). Field observations show that hypoxia occurs in summer in the TMZ at low river flow and a few days after the spring tide peak. In situ data highlight lower dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations around the city of Bordeaux, located in the upper estuary. Interactions between multiple factors limit the understanding of the processes controlling the dynamics of hypoxia. A 3D biogeochemical model was developed, coupled with hydrodynamics and a sediment transport model, to assess the contribution of the TMZ and the impact of urban effluents through wastewater...
