Fish production and processing in Nigeria OceanDocs
Tobor, J.G..
The paper highlights the importance of fish protein in essentially carbohydrate diets and relates increasing demand for fish to the short supply of protein of animal origin. The demand for fish in Nigeria from 1985 to the year 2000 is presented. Domestic production relative to demand is stressed. Estimated potential yields of resources from various bodies of water and indication of their present levels of exploration are indicated. The potential of aquaculture as the most reliable means of increasing production is emphasized while the limit of capture fishery for the same purpose is stressed. Government efforts to develop the fisheries and increase fish production are discussed together with possible causes responsible for failure of these efforts to...

Nigeria institute for oceanogaphy and marine research annual report 1995. OceanDocs
Tobor, J.G..
During the year under review, attention was focussed on the survey of white shrimp fishery and its mechanisation status in Nigeria. Survey results indicate that at sea, the crayfish beam trawl fishery is all year round, but rough from July to September. Catches are therefore better from October and best between December and June. However, where rains are heavy and early, stow net shrimp fishery at sea is best from January to March. Within the year a series of violent Swells/sourges devastate the Victoria Island beach in Lagos. The preliminary survey of the Institute showed that nourished beach is slightly above the level of the Ahmadu Bellow way. The present low nature of the beach was not adequate enough to absorb the shock impounded by the swell,...

On technical viability of the trawler fishery in Nigeria OceanDocs
Amadi, A.A.; Tobor, J.G..
The concept of technical viability is defined as a combination of factors including fishery resource. Ecology, gear technology, manpower and entrepreneurial skills financial inputs and product markets. A clear drop in catch per trawler per year in Nigeria is attributed mainly to inadequate cash flow to operate vessels in the face of high fuel costs, lack of spare parts and repair facilities, and some growth over fishing of ground fish stocks. The transition from artisanal to rapid industrial mechanized fishing has not been matched by the availability of skilled local manpower to effectively operates and service electronic, hydraulic and refrigeration equipment of modern trawlers. While Nigerian financial institutions have to some extent financed trawler...
