Defining concepts and the process of knowledge production in integrative research 26
Tress, B.; Tress, G.; Fry, G..
Recent surveys of integrative landscape research projects and their funding bodies have revealed a lack of common understanding of integrative research concepts such as interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity. This lack of common understanding has had negative consequences for the success of integrative landscape research projects. This chapter presents a set of definitions for integrative and related research concepts. The production of new knowledge - also in the form of new theory and method development - is a characteristic of integrative research. Therefore, this paper also discusses the process of knowledge production in the context of integrative landscape research. In addition we discuss criteria for integration and different levels of...

Ten steps to success in integrative research projects 26
Tress, B.; Tress, G.; Fry, G..
Research in the INTELS project has revealed that many integrative (= interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary) landscape projects frequently face similar challenges. There are, however, few guidelines available to help projects avoid common problems. In this chapter, we present what we consider the ten most important steps towards successful integrative research projects. We define successful projects as those that reach integration and project goals, produce tangible outcomes, contribute to progress in integrative research and provide positive experiences for their participants. In order to reach success, we recommend that projects are specifically organized to reach integration through the development of an Integration Implementation Plan. Projects should...

PhD students and integrative research 26
Fry, G.; Tress, B.; Tress, G..
The training of PhD students is currently very dynamic and varies widely from place to place. We present some examples of this variation and comment on how it may affect the way PhD students cope with integrative studies. Our focus is on the training needs of PhD students studying integrative research questions and their need for support from both supervisors and the wider institutional infrastructure. The role of supervisors seems key to the success or failure of integrative PhD projects. We find evidence that the disciplinary background, interest and motivation of the supervisor have much influence on research outcomes, in terms of the quality and whether PhD studies are completed on time (or at all). One clearly growing trend in PhD training is the...

How to publish a peer-reviewed research paper from integrative landscape research 26
Tress, B.; Tress, G.; Fry, G..
Publishing is an important aspect of communication in the sciences and contributes to its progress. Researchers involved in integrative landscape research perceive it to be more difficult to publish integrative studies than disciplinary studies. Therefore, the objective of this chapter is to provide guidelines for writing and publishing a research paper in a peer-reviewed journal or as a chapter in a book series. The chapter focuses on young researchers working on integrative landscape topics. The chapter is divided into two sections: the preparation of a research paper and the editorial and peer-review process. In the first part, a roadmap guides the researcher through each step involved in paper preparation and writing. The second part discusses the...

Considerations for future education in integrative landscape research 26
Tress, G.; Tress, B.; Fry, G.; Opdam, P.; Ahern, J.; Antrop, M.; Hartig, T.; Hobbs, R.; Miller, D.; Silbernagel, J.; Winder, N..
This chapter discusses challenges for PhD students involved in integrative landscape research. These challenges include terminology, epistemology, expectations, stakeholder involvement, organizational barriers, communicating and publishing, as well as career development. The chapter presents recommendations for future integrative landscape research involving PhD students and prospects for future education. The recommendations are based on our experiences in research and teaching in general, and on our exchanges with the students in the PhD master class in particular. The recommendations also reflect on the conclusions that can be drawn from the PhD students’ contributions in this book.

Trends in landscape research and landscape planning: implications for PhD students 26
Tress, G.; Tress, B.; Fry, G.; Antrop, M..
This chapter introduces the contents of the book through an analysis of current trends in landscape research and landscape planning and a discussion of the consequences of these trends for PhD students. Landscape research has become more and more applied and involves a broad variety of experts from various disciplines. Societal, political and intellectual changes have led to an increase in integrative landscape projects. Many of these projects involve PhD students in integrative landscape research. To gain an insight into the way PhD students cope with the challenges of integrative research, we used a questionnaire survey to ask 30 PhD students attending a course on integrative landscape research about their experiences of working in integrative research....
