International study on Artemia: 54. Morphological study of Artemia with emphasis to Old World strains: 2. Parthenogenetic populations OMA
Triantaphyllidis, G.; Criel, G.R.J.; Abatzopoulos, T.J.; Sorgeloos, P..
Eleven morphometric and one meristic character in 15 parthenogenetic Artemia populations have been studied by using discriminant and cluster analysis as well as scanning electron microscopy. Discriminant analysis revealed five main groups of morphological patterns: (i) the coastal Chinese populations together with a population from Kazakhstan, (ii) the inland Chinese salt lake populations, (iii) the Greek populations, (iv) one African population from Namibia and (v) a Chinese population from Xuyu (Jiangsu province). Cluster analysis was not always in agreement with discriminant analysis and these results are discussed.

International study on Artemia : 53. Morphological study of Artemia with emphasis to Old World strains: 1. Bisexual populations OMA
Triantaphyllidis, G.; Criel, G.R.J.; Abatzopoulos, T.J.; Sorgeloos, P..
A detailed morphological and allometrical study was performed with adult males and females of eleven bisexual populations of brine shrimp Artemia . Multivariate procedures, discriminant and cluster analysis, allowed to separate and group together populations which exhibit great genetic similarities. The eleven populations studied form four distinct groups: the A. franciscana group, the A. tunisiana group, the A. urminiana group and a broader group which includes Eastern Old World populations. Scanning electron microscopy revealed differences in the male genital organs of an A. tunisiana population by lacking a medial protuberance in the base of the penes while...

International study on Artemia: 55. Cyst membrane protein composition as a discriminant character in the genus Artemia OMA
Abatzopoulos, T.J.; Triantaphyllidis, G.; Beardmore, J.A.; Sorgeloos, P..
Isolated embryonic membranes (i.e. the outer cuticular membrane, the fibrous layer, the inner cuticular membrane and the hatching membrane) and homogenates of incubated, decapsulated cysts of 16 populations from five Artemia species (Crustacea, Anostraca) were examined by sodium dodecyl-sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Characteristic differences in major polypeptides between 45 and 205 kD were seen. These differences might be used as markers for identification of different Artemia species. The validity of this approach in characterizing Artemia populations is discussed.

Evidence for the induction of cyst diapause by heat-shock in Artemia (International study on Artemia: 48) OMA
Abatzopoulos, Th.; Triantaphyllidis, G.; Sorgeloos, P.; Clegg, J.S..
The brine shrimp Artemia produces embryos (cysts) in a state of obligate dormancy called diapause. Diapause is terminated by a variety of treatments, including dehydration. Previous work suggested that some cysts can be induced to reenter diapause when exposed to prolonged anoxia. Results presented in this paper indicate that heat shock (42-43°C) can also lead to diapause induction. The basis for this proposal is the finding that the final hatching level of heat-shocked cysts is increased by a post-heat dehydration, a treatment known to terminate diapause. The respiration rate of postheat-shocked cysts was found to be much lower than controls. Electrophoretic profiles of proteins in extracts from control and heatshocked cysts suggest...

International study on Artemia: 57. Morphological and molecular characters suggest conspecificity of all bisexual European and North African Artemia populations OMA
Triantaphyllidis, G.; Criel, G.R.J.; Abatzopoulos, T.J.; Thomas, K.M.; Peleman, J.; Beardmore, J.A.; Sorgeloos, P..
A scanning electron microscopy (SEM) study of bisexual Artemia populations revealed that populations representing the species A. franciscana, A. persimilis, A. urmiana, A. sinica and a recently described species from Kazakhstan have a pair of spine-like outgrowths at the basal parts of their penes, whereas populations from Southern Europe and North Africa (i.e. Mediterranean populations) lack these spine-like outgrowths. Allozyme and DNA polymorphisms, detected by allozyme starch gel electrophoresis and AFLP fingerprinting, respectively, suggested conspecificity of the studied populations from the broader Mediterranean basin. Male specimens from the collection of the Natural History Museum of London (UK) of the extinct...
