Climatic cycles as expressed in sediments of the PROMESS1 borehole PRAD1-2, central Adriatic, for the last 370 ka: 1. Integrated stratigraphy - art. no. Q01R01 ArchiMer
Piva, A; Asioli, A; Schneider, R; Trincardi, F; Andersen, N; Colmenero Hidalgo, E; Dennielou, Bernard; Flores, J; Vigliotti, L.
[1] A multiproxy integrated chronological framework, based on oxygen and carbon stable isotope stratigraphy, biostratigraphy (foraminifera and nannoplankton bioevents and foraminifer assemblage-based climate cyclicity), magnetostratigraphy, sapropel stratigraphy, and C-14 AMS radiometric dates, has been achieved for borehole PRAD1-2, collected in 185.5 m water depth in the central Adriatic. This work was carried out within the European Community project Profiles across Mediterranean Sedimentary Systems (PROMESS1). The 71.2 m long borehole spans a time interval between late MIS 11 and MIS 1 (the last 370 ka), showing a chronological resolution of 500 and 250 years per cm during interglacial and glacial intervals, respectively. At present, this record is the...

Triggering mechanisms of slope instability processes and sediment failures on continental margins: a geotechnical approach ArchiMer
Sultan, Nabil; Cochonat, Pierre; Canals, M; Cattaneo, Antonio; Dennielou, Bernard; Haflidason, H; Laberg, J; Long, D; Mienert, J; Trincardi, F; Urgeles, R; Vorren, T; Wilson, C.
The Costa target areas exhibit the variability of slope instabilities needed to improve our understanding of sediment physical and mechanical properties in areas prone to sliding. That is why in this project, we have analysed the different slope failures events from different parts of the Costa target areas, which reflect diverse triggering mechanisms. The aim of the first part of this study was to identify the geotechnical response of the sediment to different external mechanisms (earthquake, rapid sedimentation and gas hydrate melting). We have focused on the relation between external mechanisms and the consequence change in the in-situ stress state and the physical, mechanical, and elastic properties of the sediment. In the second part of the paper, the...

Analysis of Holocene sedimentary features on the Adriatic shelf from 3D very high resolution seismic data (Triad survey) ArchiMer
Marsset, Tania; Marsset, Bruno; Thomas, Yannick; Cattaneo, Antonio; Thereau, Estelle; Trincardi, F; Cochonat, Pierre.
Very High Resolution (VHR) 3D seismic data were collected on the Adriatic shelf offshore the city of Ortona in order to define the small-scale geometric complexity of late Holocene deposits. Three groups of units are distinguished from the bottom up: (1) units U1 to U3 forming the Transgressive System Tract (TST); (2) units U4 and U5 representing the condensed interval deposited on the Maximum flooding surface (MFS) and the basal unit of the High stand System Tract (HST); and (3) U6 to U 10 forming the progradational units of the HST. The muddy HST deposits show seafloor and subsurface sedimentary features over up to 40% of its extent on the Adriatic shelf. In the area offshore Ortona, the HST shows shore-parallel undulations in water depth of ca. 30-70 m...

Coastal dynamics under conditions of rapid sea-level rise: Late Pleistocene to Early Holocene evolution of barrier-lagoon systems on the northern Adriatic shelf (Italy) ArchiMer
Storms, J; Weltje, G; Terra, G; Cattaneo, Antonio; Trincardi, F.
This multidisciplinary case study of two preserved barrier systems combined the analysis of radiocarbon datings, grain-size distributions, high-resolution seismics, and shelf bathymetry with reconstructions of palaeo-environmental conditions (tides, waves, sea-level change) and forward modelling of barrier-lagoon systems, to provide an integrated view of the coastal transgressive evolution of a large sector of the northern Adriatic shelf between 15 and 8 ka BR Palaeo-environmental reconstructions point to increased tidal amplitude, low-energy wave climate and high rates of sea-level rise (up to 60 mm/a) during the formation of the oldest preserved barrier system (similar to 90 m water depth; 14.3 cal ka BP). A younger barrier system (42 m water depth; 10.5...

Sedimentary response to climate and sea level changes during the past similar to 400 ka from borehole PRAD1-2 (Adriatic margin) - art. no. Q09R04 ArchiMer
Ridente, D; Trincardi, F; Piva, A; Asioli, A; Cattaneo, Antonio.
[1] Borehole PRAD1-2 was drilled in similar to 186 m water depth on the upper slope of the central Adriatic, in the frame of Profiles across Mediterranean Sedimentary Systems (PROMESS1) European Union-funded project. The borehole penetrated 71.2 m through a stratigraphic interval characterized by subparallel seismic reflections and uniform seismic units. According to an age-depth model based on several independent proxies (including foraminifera and nannoplankton stratigraphy, delta O-18 curves, and magnetostratigraphy) the cored interval records Marine Isotope Stages and Substages (MIS) from MIS1 to the top of MIS11, thus encompassing the past similar to 370 ka. PRAD1-2 therefore represents an unprecedented continuous record through the last four...

Palaeomagnetic and rock magnetic analysis of Holocene deposits from the Adriatic Sea: detecting and dating short-term fluctuations in sediment supply ArchiMer
Vigliotti, L; Verosub, K; Cattaneo, Antonio; Trincardi, F; Asioli, A; Piva, A.
We present palaeomagnetic and rock magnetic results from five cores collected in the basin of the Adriatic Sea. Four cores (PRAD2-4; KS02-246; CSS00-23 and CSS00-07) were collected along a shore-parallel transect whereas the fifth core (AMC99-01) was retrieved in the central Adriatic in 250 m water depth, on the floor of the Meso-Adriatic Depression. After alternating field demagnetization, the natural remanent magnetization (NRM) directions show a characteristic and primary magnetization of the sediments that is representative of secular variation of the geomagnetic field. By combining C-14 dating and the ages of magnetic inclination features, it has been possible to establish an age-depth model for all of the cores. Precise identification of the secular...

A geomechanical approach for the genesis of sediment undulations on the Adriatic shelf - art. no. Q04R03 ArchiMer
Sultan, Nabil; Cattaneo, Antonio; Urgeles, R; Lee, H; Locat, J; Trincardi, F; Berne, Serge; Canals, M; Lafuerza, S.
This study is among the first to examine the genesis of the seafloor and subsurface undulations on the Adriatic continental shelf by integrating stratigraphic information and in situ and laboratory geotechnical measurements. Interpretation of sediment behavior is based on a 32-m-long borehole crossing ( 1) a possible shear plane and ( 2) a silty clay layer at about 20 m below seafloor (mbsf) on which sediment undulations are rooted and could be interpreted as a potential weak layer succession. Our main results in terms of triggering mechanism for the observed undulations show that under an earthquake, liquefaction and/or failure of the silty-clay sediments ( weak layer) leading to deformation of the upper more cohesive sediments is possible only when such...
