The interface between agriculture and nature conservation is undertaken mainly by two regulations in the EU. The Common Agricultural Policy including agri-environmental schemes regulates environmental assets in the agrarian landscape and the Natura 2000 network and Habitats Directive protects areas of special conservation interest. Agri-environmental policies are being designed and implemented differently among EUcountries and planning at farm level to accomplish the intentions in the regulations have been carried out to various degrees. The development of a new Danish concept for design and implementation of nature conservation plans at the farm level is outlined and preliminary results are used to discuss the advantages and drawbacks of the concept.... |

Enrichment of biological diversity is assumed to reflect good ecosystem integrity. The aim of the study presented here was primarily to observe, whether organic dairy farming increases the biological diversity of field boundary vegetation when compared to conventional dairy farming. Secondly, the aim was to consider if increasing duration of the organic farming period also increases diversity. Thirdly, ecological interpretations of the data were given by comparing organic and conventional field boundaries in terms of general vegetation community patterns. The results documented that diversity of plant species was significantly higher within the organic field boundaries. Analysis of community patterns revealed that Ruderal species and species with... |

Reports on the importance of hedgerows for conservation of vulnerable herbaceous forest (HF) species are conflicting. The main objective of the present study was to throw light on the possible role of hedgeworks functioning as dispersal corridors for HF species. Seventy-four plots were laid out in a hedgerow network close to ancient woodlands. A total of 30 HF species were found. Richness and cumulated frequency of HF species as well as the frequencies of six selected forest herb species were compared with hedgerow age, width, distance to woodland and weighted Ellenberg indicator values for light, soil moisture, soil pH and soil fertility. Distance to woodland followed by light and soil moisture were the most important explanatory variables of HF species... |
