The Freedoms and Capabilities of Farm Animals: How Can Organic Husbandry Fulfill Them? Organic Eprints
Cabaret, Jacques; Chylinski, Caroline; Vaarst, Mette.
Organic farming promotes animal husbandry practices that consider the welfare of the animals on the farm. The concept of animal welfare and the standards that should encompass this concept have in many cases been largely generalised in practice, which leaves relevant aspects of animal freedom or capabilities insufficiently addressed. This chapter puts forth the prospect that the capabilities approach offers an appropriate practical platform by which to improve welfare in farm animals by meeting a wider range of their natural needs and abilities. The capabilities approach coupled with effective health planning could foster organic husbandry towards a more acceptable production system for farmers and consumers alike.

Organic dairy farmers decision making in the first 2 years after conversion in relation to mastitis treatment Organic Eprints
Vaarst, Mette; Thamsborg, Stig Milan; Bennedsgaard, Torben Werner; Houe, Hans; Enevoldsen, Carsten; Aarestrup, Frank Møller; Snoo, Arno de.
In organic dairy farming, a goal about improved animal welfare and avoidance of the use of chemicals has introduced restrictions in the use of antimicrobials for treatment of infectious diseases. Mastitis is the major cause of antimicrobial treatments in Danish dairy farming. In order to improve and minimise the use of antimicrobials and the risk of antimicrobial resistance in organic farming, a study based on qualitative research interviews with newly converted organic farmers was carried out. Twenty farmers,18–26 months after conversion, were interviewed focusing on mastitis treatment patterns and the farmers’ own perception of possible changes in strategies, choices and daily routines linked to mastitishandling. Antimicrobial treatment was the dominant...

Helminth infections on organic dairy farms in Spain Organic Eprints
Orjales, Inmaculada; Mezo, Mercedes; Miranda, Marta; Gonzáles-Warleta, Marta; Rey-Crespo, Fransisco; Vaarst, Mette; Thamsborg, Stig; Diéguez, Fransisco Javier; Castro-Hermida, José Antonio; López-Alonso, Marta.
The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of the major helminth infections affecting organic dairy cattle in northern Spain. Milk and faecal samples were obtained from 443 milking cows. Ostertagia ostertargi and Fasciola hepatica exposure was assessed by detection of specific antibodies in milk samples and F. hepatica infection was diagnosed by the detection of coproantigens in faecal samples. Dictyocaulus viviparus and Calicophoron daubneyi infections were diagnosed by conventional coprological techniques. The prevalence of infections caused by F. hepatica was considerable low, but similar to data reported from conventional farming in the same area. The prevalence rate of C. daubneyi infection was higher than previous data mirroring an increase...

Taking our future in our hands - storytelling from Uganda to inspire action Organic Eprints
Vaarst, Mette; Tibasiima, Thaddeo; Dissing, Aage; Dissing, Inge Lis.
This book aims at telling about our common learning in projects in different parts of Uganda, where farmer families and local communities have worked since 2009 to improve their livelihoods and environments based on common learning about organic and agroecological farming, joint efforts for better livelihoods and community development, using the approach of ‘Farmer Family Learning Groups’ (FFLG). This way of working together takes the ‘family approach’: our starting point is whole households working together on each their individual farm. As opposed to the methods where farmer groups work on demonstration farms or demonstration plots, this project is based on groups, which work at each other's individual farms, not focusing on one enterprise, but on...

Farmer Family Learning Groups for Community Development Organic Eprints
Vaarst, Mette; Tibasiima, Thaddeo; Nalunga, Jane; Dissing, Aage; Dissing, Inge Lis.
The approach which is owned by everybody who uses it. Farmer Family Learning Groups are groups of farmer families, who together define their needs and goals in relation to their own future development, both as individuals, families and as a group - and then they help each other to reach the goals. The groups form strong networks and help each other, and help the entire local community. Organic farming is practiced in ways which are contextual specific and dependent on the environment, wherever it is being practiced. Forming farmer groups using this approach is likewise contextual specific and entirely determined by the needs and wishes and agreements within the group of families who in the first place decided to form a group for conscious and goal...

Perceptions of French private veterinary practitioners’ on their role inorganic dairy farms and opportunities to improve their advisoryservices for organic dairy farmers Organic Eprints
Duval, Julie; Bareille, Nathalie; Fourichon, Christine; Madouasse, Aurélien; Vaarst, Mette.
Veterinarians could be the expected sparring partners of organic dairy farmers in promoting animal health which is one of the main organic principles. However, in the past organic dairy farmers did not always consider veterinarians to be pertinent advisors for them. The objectives of this study are – from private veterinary practitioners’ point of views- i) to describe the roles of veterinarians today in organic dairy farmers’ animal health promotion strategies, ii) to identify factors related to organic farming which determine their role on organic dairy farms, and, iii) to identify opportunities for improvement of veterinarians’ advisory services for organic dairy herds. Fourteen veterinarians, providing herd health advisory services to dairy farmers,...

This catalogue of ideas has been developed in a joint effort by six organisations (Caritas Kampala, Uganda Rural Development (URDT), Sulma Foods, Africa2000Network (A2N), National Organic and Organic Denmark) in the project ECOSAF in Uganda. The approach has been quite a lot like action research, and Development in practice. The focus of this project (2013-2015) was Farmer Family Learning Groups (FFLG) as a method for developing long-term food security through social capital building. Furthermore, another project based on the FFLG approach but focusing on the formation of Marketing Associations (MAs) contributed to this booklet. This project was carried through in a joined effort between Sustainable Agricultural Trainers Network (SATNET), NOGAMU and OD....

Continuous development is needed within the farm to reach the goal of good animal health and welfare in organic livestock farming. The very different conditions between countries call for models that are relevant for different farming types and can be integrated into local practice and be relevant for each type of farming context. This article reviews frameworks, principles and practices for animal health and welfare planning which are relevant for organic livestock farming. This review is based on preliminary analyses carried out within a European project (acronym ANIPLAN) with participants from seven countries. The process begins with gathering knowledge about the current status within a given herd as background for making decisions and planning future...

Cattle management practices and milk production on mixed smallholder organic pineapple farms in Central Uganda Organic Eprints
Nalubwama Muwanga, Sylvia; Kabi, Fred; Vaarst, Mette; Smolders, Gidi; Kiggundu, Muhammad.
A longitudinal study to assess animal management practices and milk production was conducted for a period of 12 months on 30 smallholder farms keeping dairy cattle and certified organic pineapple production in Luwero and Kayunga districts, based on questionnaire and on-farm collected data. Farm sizes were 9.3 ± 6.7 acres in tethering system and 4.3 ± 2.6 acres in zero-grazing. Fifty-four percent of the zero-grazing herds had animal housing facilities. All farmers in tethering system kept cows on earthen floors and calves without bedding. Hygiene level in existing farms was low. Majority of calves were fed once a day by restricted suckling (77 %). Seventy-four percent of tethered cows were only fed on natural grass, while cows under zero-grazing system had...

Does organic farming face distinctive livestock welfare issues? - A conceptual analysis Organic Eprints
Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted; Vaarst, Mette; Kristensen, Erik Steen.
The recent development and growth of organic livestock farming and the related development of national and international regulations has fuelled discussions among scientists and philosophers concerning the proper conceptualisation of animal welfare. These discussions on livestock welfare in organic farming draw on the conventional discussions and disputes on animal welfare, which involve issues such as different definitions of welfare (clinical health, absence of suffering, sum of positive and negative experiences, etc.), the possibility for objective measures of animal welfare and the acceptable level of welfare. It seems clear that livestock welfare is a value-laden concept and that animal welfare science cannot be made independent of questions of values...

’Stable Schools’ as a concept for animal health and welfare promotion Organic Eprints
Vaarst, Mette; Nissen, Thorkild B.; Christensen, jens; Klaas, Ilka; Bennedsgaard, Torben W.; Østergaard, Søren.
The concept of Farmer Field Schools was implemented in a group of Danish organic dairy farms in order to support the process of reaching a common goal among the farmers of phasing out antibiotics from their herds. The results from the herds indicate that crucial changes took place during the project period of approximately one year. We suggest that this is due to the combination of the farmer group’s ownership over the common goal in combination with the individual goals of each farmer. This formed a motivation for improvements on all farms. The encouraging process of seeing successful development in colleagues’ farms together with the advice received from the group formed basis for a strong common learning process .

This report serves as a deliverable from the ANIPLAN project, with the original title ‘Evaluation report on state of the art regarding animal health and welfare planning in the participating countries’ (Deliverable 5.1). We chose to focus on the farmers’ perspective in each country, and ask the farmers who had participated in our project how they perceived the process of animal health and welfare planning. We did that using a questionnaire which each participant used in an interview with the farmer, asking some specific questions with the aim to evaluate how the farmers had experienced the ANIPLAN approach. We found that this focus was important as a supplement to other outcomes from the project, such as reduction of medicines (Ivemeyer et al., 2011) and...

Staldskolehåndbogen Organic Eprints
Lisborg, Lone; Vaarst, Mette; Nissen, Thorkild Bülow.

Vaarst, Mette; Alban, Lis; Jensen, Margit Bak; Mogensen, Lisbeth.
Flere dyrlæger nævnte, at eftersom reglerne vedrørende medicinhåndtering i...

Animal Health and Welfare Planning - Identifying key principles and approaches Organic Eprints
Nicholas, Pip; Roderick, Steve; Vaarst, Mette.
During the presentations and discussions at the 1st ANIPLAN workshop it became apparent that there are many different approaches to disease prevention and treatment planning. These exist in a variety of structured forms, and also involve different approaches to the dialogue between farmer and advisor. The distinction between ‘an animal health plan’ and ‘animal health planning’ has also become evident (see Atkinson & Neale, 2008 in these proceedings). Whereas a plan refers to documentation, planning is understood as a process which actively involves the farmer, is based on an assessment and evaluation of a real situation and includes an explicit formulation of the farmer’s goals regarding animal health and welfare. In order to develop a single yet...

Based on urgent needs for food security compounded by a changing climate which impacts and is impacted by agricultural land-use and food distribution practices, we explore the processes of action in implementing agroecological food systems. We identified the following characteristics for an agroecological food system: 1. Minimizing use of external inputs, 2. Extent of internal resource recycling, 3. Resilience, 4. Multifunctionality, 5.Building on complexity and incorporating greater systems integration,6. Contextuality, 7. Equity and, 8. Nourishment. We focus on the city-region food systems context, concluding with practical drivers for realizing more agroecological food systems in cityregion contexts. Agroecological food systems are widely...
