A total of 20 organic layer flocks (in excess of 80 % of all Finnish organic egg producers that sell eggs to consumers through egg packaging companies or food shops) were visited in 2003 and 2004. Information about the farms was collected through faecal samples, mite traps and by interviewing the producer, using a semi-structured interview guide. Additionally, 38 dead hens from 12 farms were examined pathologically and for parasites through post mortem. The descriptive results are presented. |

The victims of TB have a reduced growth potential. In addition, victims of TB have reduced growth rate. The victims are likely to suffer more frequently from other health disordes than pigs with non-bitten tails. Tail biting was often preceded by leg disorders and followed by reduced appetite, which may be associated with reduced growth rate of victims of tail biting. The costs of TB were particularly heavy when medication was needed and when the fattening of the victims could not be continued as planned. As TB behaves like an epidemic, immediate response to tail biting is important to prevent further cases and economic damage. |

We designed and mailed a questionnaire to 1000 Finnish dairy producers and published the same questionnaire on the internet. A total of 451 questionnaires (45 %) were returned from the random sample and 738 dairy producers responded in the internet. Thus, we got responses from 10,6 % of all 11244 dairy farms in Finland. We found out that 84 % of Finnish dairy producers disbud their calves, and 69 % of these farms use a veterinarian at least sometimes to medicate their calves prior to disbudding. |
