Benthic communities in the Southern Bight of the North Sea and their use in ecological monitoring OMA
Govaere, J.C.R.; Van Damme, D.; Heip, C.H.R.; De Coninck, L.A.P..
Macrobenthic and meiobenthic communities of an area off the Belgian coast of the North Sea were studied from 1970 until 1975 at 74 stations. On the basis of both macro- and meiobenthos, three zones can be distinguished in the area. The coastal zone is characterized by the macrobenthic Abra alba community, corresponding to the meiobenthic Microarthridion littorale-Halectinosoma herdmani community, and the open sea zone by the macrobenthic Venus gallina community and the meiobenthic Leptastacus laticaudatus-Paramesochra helgolandica community. In between is a transient zone where elements of both other zones mix. The distribution of these zones is governed by the...

Inleidende oecologische studie van klei- en turfbanken in de getijdenzone te Raversijde (België) OMA
Jocqué, R.; Van Damme, D..
The beach of Raversijde shows substrata which are very rich in comparison to the rest of natural substrata along the Belgian coast, consisting exclusively of sandy beaches. At this moment however it is threatened by silting up due to construction of breakwaters. From June to December 1970 samples were taken at several places of the beach. The investigation was focused on the peatbanks situated around mean tide level and the claybanks near low tide level. The foulding of those substrata was compared to that of wooden wreck situated near mean tide level . We found that the foulding on the vertical slopes of peatholes was characterised by as striking periodicity. This is due to the fact that only a few organisms are able to settle down immediately on peat....

Harpacticoid copepod community structure in two North Sea estuaries in relation to pollution OMA
Van Damme, D.; Heip, C.H.R.; Herman, R.; Vaeremans, M..
The harpacticoid copepod assemblages of two estuaries in the Netherlands, the Westerschelde and the Eems-Dollard, are compared. Both estuaries have similar physical characteristics but the Westerschelde is much more polluted than the Eems-Dollard. Harpacticoid copepod assemblages in both estuaries are similar in terms of species composition. However, there is a striking difference in quantitative characteristics : the highest annual averages of density, biomass and diversity in the Westerschelde are below the lowest annual averages in the Eems-Dollard estuary. Because both estuaries are extensively monitored, data concerning many possible causes of this difference could be compared. It is argued that it is the high load of heavy metals in the Westerschelde...

Influence of pollution on the harpacticoid copepods of two North Sea estuaries OMA
Van Damme, D.; Heip, C.H.R.; Willems, K.A..
Seasonal monitoring of the meiobenthos in the Dutch estuaries revealed an anomaly in density and diversity of harpacticoid copepods in the Westerschelde. Another Dutch estuary, the Eems Dollard, has comparable hydrodynamical, physical and sedimentological, characteristics and a similar fauna, but even in the severely organically polluted oligohaline mudflats of this estuary, annual average density and diversity of endo-epibenthic harpacticoid communities are higher than at similar less enriched meso- to polyhaline biotopes of the Westerschelde. Besides the concentrations of inorganic pollutants, such as phosphates and nitrates, the concentration of pesticides, cyanide, detergents, phenols, oils, polychlorobenzenes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and...
