Progress in biomedication using live foods OMA
Robles, R.; Sorgeloos, P.; Van Duffel, H.; Nelis, H.J..
With the intensification of aquaculture production systems, mass mortality of fish and shellfish caused by bacterial infections is not unusual. Chemotherapy (treatment of infection with antimicrobial compounds) and immunoprophylaxis (vaccination and immunostimulation), are the common methods applied to treat bacterial infections. In search of an efficient and cost-effective delivery route for antimicrobial agents and/or immuno-prophylactics to treat fish and shrimp larvae, the use of live prey organisms bioencapsulated with drugs has been explored. This article provides an update on the use of the bioencapsulation technique in aquaculture.

Use of a potential probiotic Lactococcus lactis AR21 strain for the enhancement of growth in the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis (Müller) OMA
Shiri Harzevili, A.R.; Van Duffel, H.; Dhert, Ph.; Swings, J.; Sorgeloos, P..
The effect of a potential probiotic on the growth performance of a rotifer and its inhibition against Vibrio anguillarum was studied. Probiotic strain AR21 had no significant observable effect on the growth rate of rotifers under optimal culture conditions in three consecutive experiments. In the first and second experiments, the AR21 strain exhibited an inhibitory effect against the V. anguillarum strain when rotifer cultures were maintained at a suboptimal feeding regime. The growth rate of the rotifers in suboptimal feeding conditions was significantly higher in the treatment receiving AR21 and V. anguillarum than in the treatment where only V. anguillarum was added.

Possible applications of modern fish larviculture technology to ornamental fish production OMA
Dhert, P.; Lim, L.C.; Candreva, P.; Van Duffel, H.; Sorgeloos, P..
There has been rapid development in the marine foodfish larviculture technology in Europe since the early eighties, especially in the flat fish, turbot and halibut, and the bass and bream species. The most significant improvements in the eighties were the introduction of light control, artificial reproduction techniques, appropriate water treatment and the use of rotifers and Artemia nauplii of specific sizes and in the late eighties and early nineties the quality enhancement of live food organisms using specific enrichment techniques. Present research is focused on the implementation of several microbial techniques to improve the hygiene of live prey and fish. Many of the modern larviculture techniques being used in marine foodfish...

Production, disinfection and evaluation for aquaculture applications of rotifer resting eggs from Bohai Bay, P.R. of China OMA
Dhert, P.; Schoeters, K.; Vermeulen, P.; Sun, J.; Gao, S.; Shang, Z.; Naihong, X.; Van Duffel, H.; Sorgeloos, P..
The dynamics of resting egg production of the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis originating from a wild population in the Tanggu Saltworks (P.R. China) was investigated. In the natural environment as well as in semi-controlled rearing conditions an increased resting egg production was noticed with declining food availability. Processed resting eggs had a hatching efficiency of 3x106 rotifers per gramme irrespective of their origin. Hatching started 22h after the initiation of incubation and was completed after 36h. Rotifers obtained from resting eggs could be further cultured on Culture Selco® and enriched with Super Selco®. The fatty acid profile of these rotifers were not divergent from reference rotifers...
