Effects of hydrogen peroxide treatment in <i>Artemia</i> cysts of different geographical origin OMA
Van Stappen, G.; Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
Short-term treatment with peroxide solutions has been tested as a chemical way to break the diapause of <i>Artemia</i> cysts of different species and geographical strains. The methodology was further standardized by analyzing the impact of the cyst hydration level and the application conditions (concentration, duration, temperature) on the hatching percentage. The peroxide treatment was most effective in deactivating diapause when applied on fully hydrated cysts, and showed a quantitative nature: a maximal positive effect was obtained for specific combinations of peroxide concentration and exposure time. The peroxide effect was preserved after processing and storage of treated cysts. The biochemical mechanisms possibly involved in induction and...

Improved use of the fluidized bed dryer for <i>Artemia</i> cysts OMA
Bosteels, T.; Tackaert, W.; Van Stappen, G.; Sorgeloos, P..
A fluidized bed dryer for processing <i>Artemia</i> cysts at the temperatures above 40°C is described and evaluated. The design is directed towards electronic temperature regulation and optimal design of the drying unit. The described fluidized bed dryer proves to be reliable for cyst processing, using inflow air temperatures up to 90°C. The use of this elevated temperature ensures a higher drying rate, resulting in a drying capacity more than 4 times higher than when using inflow air of 40°C. Electronic temperature regulation resulted in a large flexibility of the temperature regime inside the drying unit.

A standard experimental diet for the study of fatty acid requirements of weaning and first ongrowing stages of European sea bass (<i>Dicentrarchus labrax</i> L.): selection of the basal diet OMA
Coutteau, P.; Van Stappen, G.; Sorgeloos, P..
A standard experimental diet was developed to study lipid nutrition in marine fish larvae during weaning and first ongrowing. Basal diets were prepared by extrusion-cooking, crumbling of the pellets, and sieving to obtain particles in the size ranges 150-300 µm and 300-500 µm. Three protein sources in the extruded basal diet were evaluated: (1) micronized cod protein granulate (COD); (2) a mixture of casein, gelatin, and albumin (CGA); (3) a mixture of cod fish meal, whey protein, soybean protein concentrate, albumin, hemoglobin meal, and wheat gluten (MIX). A variable lipid fraction was added to the extruded nucleus by coating the particles with an emulsion, coconut oil (COCO), or fish oil emulsion (FO), in a fluidized bed granulator. European sea bass...
